Description The morning's glow dimmed the sky's darkness of the night life. Ugo huddled within Ma's, Pa's and Sumitra's feathers and body heat. Vito had detached himself from his family once again and perched on a bare tree limb coated in silver, shimmering frost. It was the closest tree at the ocean's waters and the perfect spot to feel the salty, sea spray. The smell of horrible, fishy odours rushed into his nostrils, but he heeded no attention to it, for he was in deep thought.
"Not in bed, huh?" uttered a sweet, slow voice. He rolled his eyes toward the sound, but did not move his skull. The old Glow-eye female hopped down beside him. She was beautiful but she was a wise owl and, above all, aged. Her glow was ghostly, pale blue yet the dots sparkled and shone as brilliant as stars in a white night. But her name was the most glamorous thing about her, as dazzling as the beaming blue patterns that outlined her pure, white, heart-shaped face, Nova. She was the mother of Beam, the Glow-eye elder, and known as the oldest Glow-eye in the entire Kingdom of Light and being quite proud of it. "Old crows like me should be resting, but I've still got some might and strength in these frail, hollow bones of mine." She smiled.
Vito stared deeply in her gorgeous, bright eyes that shone like the designs on her feathers and under wings. He had never known why the Glow-eye's white feathers and heart faces were sprinkled in blue light; he had never seen such owls with magical stars speckled among misty feathers the colour of big, puffy clouds. Vito turned away. Moon-eyes were very close relatives of the Glow-eyes, but why weren't Moon-eyes as beautifully detailed as their white, heart-shaped faced cousins. Moon-eyes have round, flat faces with speckles of silver dots and half circle lines around their moon like eyes. He had heard of owls in the Barrens of Shadows having heart-shaped faces, they were known as Gloom-eyes, the owls who were like shadows that barely spoke and had eyes with no emotions. He shivered, how could any owl live such a dull, lightless life in the Barrens of Shadows known as Gloom-eyes? It was unspeakable.
He ruffled his dull, glowless wings. "Nova, how are we so closely related in origins, yet we don't look anything alike?" he asked as if he was an elder himself.
Nova was still in thought but it wasn't long before she opened her beak, "You speak of wise words, young one. But we are indeed very alike even though you are not drizzled in blue stars from beyond." Her words were slow in intelligence. Vito rolled his eyes. Saying you are drizzled in stars from beyond doesn't make him feel any better.
But he didn't what to be disrespectful so he simple said, "But how, your eyes sparkle like the Starry Ocean under the sun's glow, while mine are dull and silver like the gloom of the moon." He stated, but Nova seemed puzzled by his words. Vito became unnerved by her strange gaze.
"Silver?" she said, baffling Vito even more. "I can see with your sister and parents, but not you."
"What do you mean," countering her statement lifting a grey eyebrow, "Ma always said I have eyes with a moon's shine, don't I? And what about Ugo?" Didn't she see his glistening eyes like polished, grey stones in the night's silver blaze, of all owls, why didn't she not spot his, not so beautiful, eyes? Bamboozled, she continued answering Vito's questions.
"I mean, your eyes are like rainbow clouds, moving across the sky. I also see these colourful eyes in your brother's too. You do not know?" she said. Vito froze, the save vision he also saw in the Glass Pool's surface. But he could only see when he stared at himself through the still, untouched reflection. But maybe there are owls out there that can see these strange eye colours within his own? Or maybe Glow-eyes are as magical as their speckled, glowing feathers and heart like faces.
"I only thought the waters of the Glass Pool could reveal my strange eyes to the other owls!" he began hopping up and down bobbing the maple's branch, nearly knocking Nova off in the process. But she only cooed and giggled as Vito lessened his happiness.
Nova became serious, bamboozled again. "The Glass Pool is not water." Vito frowned confused.
"Not water, but it is, still, untouched water that never freezes over or ripples."
"I'm simply saying that what you think is water is really the future." She said softly but as firmly as a demanded.
"The future?" he repeated baffled.
"Yes, the future."
"But the future cannot settle, reflecting oneself?"
"Ah yes, but it is your destiny that stares back at you. Not water, but your future life through your eyes where all owls' destinies lay hidden. And you, young one, have a very dazzling, important future life that your brother, Ugo, was it," Vito nodded and Nova smiled continuing, "also shares. Echo has assigned a great destiny for you, if," she paused, "you choose to accept it." She concluded. Vito stood tranquil in awe to the old Glow-eye's words. How could she know so much? Then the words of the little fox, Mumbo, clanged against his skull. His mind swirled with thoughts of writing, reading and, most of all, the Knight-eyes. Who were they? Were they a different species or a whole different animal? And could Vito, if his destiny is true, could become a Knight-eye, whatever it was. Maybe Nova knew what little Mumbo was talking about. But part of him wanted to keep his thoughts a secret, for now at least.
"Thank you, Nova. And I choose to except my destiny and hope Ugo does the same." He smiled and lit toward Home base. He looked back only once watching Nova cool her feathers by the ocean's mist. Was Nova an angel sent to tell Vito the truth? Maybe she was, but then the only thought that could connect in Vito brain was sleep.
