Description Irken alphabet font (small, for avis): [link]

~~~
I just started learning Irken and the biggest thing that bugged me about it was how long it took to write each letter even in the simplified version. Surely Irkens would be too lazy to do that, so I decided that they probably had a very quick way of writing it which the computer would then change to the proper version automatically.
The simplified Irken is a modification of this version: [link]
Note that each speedwrite symbol is made without lifting the pen. A few of them can look the same if you're not careful (such as A and C) but I made sure none of them were totally the same.
A few tips:
D and O look the same, so on D I made the horizontal line diagonal.
M, O, and P are close. Make sure you have O with a shorter vertical line, M with equal lines, and P with a little third line at the bottom.
If you're just starting to learn Irken, I suggest having a reference sheet with both the original version and the speedwrite version. That way you become familiar with both instead of learning the speedwrite and then struggling with the real version later.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Hope you guys found this useful. Feel free to print it out and use it as a reference. If you put it on a website, just make sure you credit it to me and link it to this page, or else I'll melt your face off or something.

I write it in Simplified Irken, myself (: I think I'd be very confused with the speedwrite, as I get confused enough at times reading other people's handwritten Irken. If I ever got fluent enough, maybe ;D

InvaderMax In reply to enigmatia [2010-01-17 19:09:38 +0000 UTC]

I know what you mean! I've even had trouble reading the proper Irken on people's drawings WITH a translation sheet because of tiny alterations. But once I got more familiar with the alphabet I was able to see the resemblance.

When I thought of this I really wanted to make a hand-recognition program thing that would transform this into the proper alphabet. Kind of like those things you can write with when you have a tablet.

enigmatia In reply to InvaderMax [2010-01-18 02:16:11 +0000 UTC]

Yeah! It's just like how people have their own styles of dotting the letter I, or doing the tail end on a Y or G, it varies by writer. It's only that we've been so fluent in English that we learnt to distinguish it so well.

Aahh I see what you mean. That makes sense.
Oh did you know, apparently in Irken, Zim's name is spelled as just "IM" with no Z? It was in the Irken subtitles with the DVD's, and apparently the Z must be silent or something. Very strange, because the main character's name starts with a Z - why couldn't they have picked another letter to give a rule?

InvaderMax In reply to enigmatia [2010-01-18 18:23:44 +0000 UTC]

Ah, yes! I was so confused by that when I was watching the DVDs. I actually went through the trouble of trying to decode them. [link] Apparently the last three letters are the ones that don't have a symbol, but I got one for X and not V, so I know it's not all that accurate.

Yeah, it doesn't look nearly as cool. I figure once I learn the characters I'll be able to write fast enough to tolerate the original version. But until then... *happyshrug*

You seriously want to learn Irken? I'm sorry but how does that benefit you in life?

I always get stumped when people say they're learning it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

InvaderMax In reply to Cocoroot [2010-01-16 22:53:42 +0000 UTC]

I don't set time aside for it. If I have a few moments of not doing anything it's a convenient filler. To start a drawing or writing project would be silly since I wouldn't have time to really do anything. As a slow reader if I were to just keep a book handy I would get stuck in the middle of a paragraph. This is something I can stop mid-sentence. Even mid-word.

The benefit is thus making dead time pass more quickly and without me getting bored. It's not about learning the alphabet so that I can use it; it's about the time spent learning. It's something mildly engaging to keep me occupied. I've done the same thing with learning to write backwards and in shorthand. I never use the skills for anything, but learning it gave me something to do when otherwise I'd be doing nothing.

It's the writing equivalent of learning to solve a rubix-cube, except it doesn't take time from other things. It's a useless talent acquired out of killing dead time.

That's exactly what I did
My friend learnt it with me too, and we actually use it to write notes to each other in class. It's handy

Really? I used it to write stories during class, os noone could read it (I did not like those people)^^
I also used it for cheating in tests (psssst!!)

Yeah! The teacher in our Math class DID manage to catch us, but when he went to read it he was so very confused, and embarrassed because he said was going to read it out to the class.. when he found out he couldn't! He said "Oooh, you wrote this in elven ". He was good humored about it, and told us not to do it again.

Haha, wow, this indeed is very handy! XD

None of my real-life friends share my IZ interest, but if they did we'd be sure to do so.

In which case it would still be the same thing (killing dead time, as passing notes always is) only more fun and interactive.

ah, that was like me. not even my brothers liked the show, and it was me in I swear the entire school who only knew about it.

Ah well, such is life, right?

But I like the idea, and the speedwrite is really handy now, thanks a bunch.

InvaderMax In reply to Vee-Ro [2010-06-05 17:58:57 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, same here. =/ Tis a bummer.

I finally got some Real Life friends who like the show. I literally met them yesterday. lol. And the only reason we met was because I happened to bump into them here on dA and noticed pictures of them at a convention I went to. Life is odd, no? Hmhm.

And no problem. Creating these kinds of things is a great deal of fun. I'm glad you like it. ^^ Thanks for the fav.

I kept telling one of my friends to just watch a few episodes or one, to see if they liked it and they never did. So I brought my laptop to school and forced them to watch it... needless to say they love it now.

So... it's me and my friend who know about Invader Zim in a school of about 1000 kids... possibly more... it's a big school.

2 against 1000... I'm gonna need a lot more chairs with straps on em... and a lot more monitors. Prepare for Zimpact school! Prepare!!!

Or you could just hijack the screen when there's a school assembly.

I should... I should find a good episode to show the school, just cause it'd be cool. Hmm... now which one...

InvaderMax In reply to Vee-Ro [2010-06-05 19:09:50 +0000 UTC]

Backseat Drivers has always been a favorite of mine, and I think if I could show someone only one episode that'd be it. It has a good balance of Zim's "evil"/phail, Gir's madness, Dib's heroicness, the general Irken personality, and all-around silliness. Not to mention it has not one but several of my all-time favorite quotes. XD

Vee-Ro In reply to InvaderMax [2010-06-05 19:22:29 +0000 UTC]

WEEEE! I DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU JUST SAID!!!!!

I think if I were to hijack an assembly it would have to be that one. It just has a lot of fun in it... just... laughs all around, and I think the mass majority would get a kick from it.
