I never understood how bullets would kill zombies. They're zombies. How is a bullet going to stop them?

Well, a bullet can break through bones thus slowing them down. Plus, most zombies if shot in the head are killed (the classic weak spot of all zombies).
Fire on the other hand, it'll burn them but it'll take time for it to work... but by the time that happens, they'll be too close.
but if you don't have bullets or a flame thrower... chainsaw is the best way to go...
