It's a very cool "graffiti" effect all around, fitting with how disheveled, scratched up and dirty they are while lost in the jungle. I can't help but imagine that the hazy darkness and blobs of light are at least in part because Helga's starting to pass out from shock and from forgetting to breathe β along with the wonderfully shocked expression and Arnold's very tender and reassuring smooch.
