Description Myspace? In my DeviantART?

It's more common than you think.

Posting non-arts is both blasphemy and madness. This is DEVIANTART!

I kinda understand the part about the friends, I wouldn't post pictures of my friends on here unless it was an artistic picture of them or if I doctored it up somehow in photoshop. But people like to show off their pets and I don't really have anything against people posting pics of their pets on here. Maybe they're just proud. I'm not totally against putting pics of friends on dA but I do understand your frustration.

I don't have a myspace and i don't like the fact that others treat like it.

I got what you meant by this. There's a difference between your personal snapshot album and using your friends as models for artistic shots. You can usually tell the difference. Even if the art shot isn't amazing, you can tell the ones who are trying for art and those that aren't.

Just because someone took a picture with a camera, that does not mean it's an artistic photograph. An artistic photograph captures the light, subject, or mood and conveys that to the viewer. A MySpace-worthy, self-held, flash-bleached, dutch-angled, out-of-focus picture of someone making a pouty face and giving a hand gesture is NOT artistic. It's not MEANT to be artistic. It's just someone taking a pic of themselves to share with friends or attempting to garner attention to feed their ever-starved need.

And that's not what DeviantART is about. MySpace is that-a-way. -->

Okay, let's see if I can talk about this calmly, seeing as reading all this mess has made me pretty mad.
*deep breath*
Okay. Let's get a few things straight here. Photography is art. If you put thought and effort into the shot (even if it's a picture of your friends of your pet) it's art.
I agree that random pictures of your friends hanging out at the beach, or a picture of your cat lounging on the couch isn't art. It's a picture. A snapshot of the moment.
However, if said picture is focused on say the cat's eyes glowing in the gloom, or your friends linking arms and walking down the beach with the setting sun in the background, THAT is art.
So in some ways, I agree with this. In others I do not.

But honestly, my opinion is that you seriously need to open your mind to the different forms of art and instead of complaining about something, actually DOING something about it. If you don't like, either change it, or DEAL WITH IT.

Neither do I. Unless it's actually an interesting photo that's not just a bad quality shot of random people.

At least if you work at it, your art will improve over time. Unfortunately, the same can not be said for internet disease.

YES! ARTIST PRIDE! We don't want pictures of your friends, pets, or anything else if it's a photograph! (excluding scenery photos)

It is a pretty disturbing trend when the art is hidden below a pile of photos which don't belong on this website.

I disagree.

dA has a section for pictures. It's called photography.

I'm against this.

Hun, when you take a picture of your fluffy bunny jumjoo because he's so cute and cuddlesome and just HAVE to post it for people to see, that's not art.
That's NOT photography as an art form.
That's what this is against.

Some people spend days, weeks, and months preparing for a photo shoot. They pour resources and dedication into furthering their art. They work out lighting and which lens to use.

Sometimes you get lucky and shoot a spontaneous shot of some amazing interaction,
but someone giving their best buddy bunny ears is NOT a spontaneous photograph,
it's crap.

And....
also, you're an idiot.

What exactly would one be learning from taking and posting horrrible internet-disease photos? These pictures require no skill whatsoever, so how exactly would that be practicing? It's certainly a far cry from legitimate photographic art, that's for sure. Anyway, if they were just practicing and trying to get a feel for the camera, then why would they post their junk on an art website?

Ionlyfavegarbage In reply to BijouFox55 [2008-01-17 22:48:05 +0000 UTC]

I've always thought that the "photography" section was for photography with serious artistic application and not for people posting pictures of their friends and/or pets.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BijouFox55 In reply to Ionlyfavegarbage [2008-01-18 10:46:30 +0000 UTC]

Well maybe it's practice.

Ionlyfavegarbage In reply to BijouFox55 [2008-01-18 19:29:59 +0000 UTC]

How is it practice if artistic photography requires skill and these types of photographs do not? That'd be like saying you're going to practice the guitar by playing Guitar Hero on easy. Nothing against Guitar Hero, it's a fun game, just saying it's a different experience that won't neccesarily affect the outcome of actually practicing the guitar..
