Story time:

Meet Kai, the most ambiguous dream character of mine. Here is the story of the first appearance.

Couple of years ago I had one of this 'cool nightmares' where the end wasn't tragic but very exciting (apart for the other characters... well, they are not real anyway ).

I'm standing in the middle of a street. Beautiful evening. Long shadows from the trees nearby and street lanterns. I don't know what this town is, but it looks very nice and small... like this kind of place that you would come to... just because... Nice cafés, beautiful square, some old architecture, or whatever reason, you name it. Very green leaves and grass. Some people are walking around minding their own business... But there is some disturbance. This feeling that something is terribly wrong and that it's way too quiet. Suddenly I see some people in a distance... running away from something... invisible? What? No, not invisible... it's something to do with a shadow.

It gets closer. People around are freaking out, screaming, pushing each other and clearly don't know where to run. I'm searching for a place to hide, but I'm getting out of time and there is just no place, I'm in the middle of a street under the sun like a big flashing board 'come and eat me!’. So, while I'm having a moment of self-cursing, some guy near me 'falls' through the lantern shadow. I'm happy to notice that I'm not touching any shadows... and then I see something coming out of the lantern shadow. First slowly, like a black smoke, formless. Strike of uncontrollable fear. Then more rapidly, aggressively, getting its form, something is crawling out. I'm frozen from fear and, well, I've seen what happened moments ago... Not like there is any chance to run. Is there? To my surprise this thing is way bigger that I could have imagined. What the hell is it? Carnivore hell horse? Dog-dinosaur? Dragon-cat? I see a massive head with a full set of long sabre-like teeth and two different couples of eyes staring at me. I need to say, that, despite of being utterly destructive, this thing is pretty beautiful and uniform: short shiny black fur, feline grace of movements, and large muscular body with a long tail, long ears, and a horse-like mane.

A gun shot. The creature turns back and in a matter of a few seconds reaches some brave, but soon dead, policeman. More police arrive. The thing jumps from shadow to shadow and consumes anyone on its way. By the way, his pray just dissolves in his mouth. He does bite, but no tearing or swallowing, no blood... it all becomes black smoke, that fast disappears in the air. I finally find some good spot to hide, but before I could come closer to it, the thing changes its tactic. A cloud of a black smoke spreads around the creature like a thick fog. World around turns into a darkness. I can’t see my hands. There is no light at all. Sounds disappear as well. Unable to navigate I sit on a ground. I’m trying to hear something and I hear… breathing. This thing stands just near me, but I don’t see it. It sees me. Moments are passing, but nothing is happening. I’m spreading my hand in front of me and I feel the breath on my fingers. He is just there! Another moment and the darkness falls apart. No black fog, no monster, no people... just an empty street. Beautiful evening. Long shadows from the trees nearby and street lanterns.

Strangely, this character became an often visitor to my dreams and every time I learn something new about it. So, there is much to tell…

The drawing above from another dream that I had back in 2016. It was pretty short dream. Basically you see it right now. Kai is walking through the night field. I like the scene so much, so I shared the vision. Here he looks more like a horse. Why? Because Kai can change his form. He can adapt. Not fully, but enough.
