I believe the players in the group planted trees in the underdark, and gave them light with some sort of tiny sun creation spell, and then using some druidy spell they were able to teleport between all of the trees that were planted underground.
So, the light part is just to keep the tree alive.
They are basically a weird way to make teleportation circles
