Description This is a character design for yet another background project of mine dealing with the demons in the Goetia , or Lesser Key of Solomon. I like the Goetic demons a lot so they're in a lot of my projects. nn; This is part of a story about the [HEAVILY revised] history of magic and mages, and it involves a lot of demons. This is my design for Astaroth in it.

Astaroth is female here because the demon Astaroth actually evolved from the goddess Astarte. A lot of demons under the Judeo-Christian set of beliefs are rewritten deities from other cultures, actually. Anyways, she's a character who's constantly in flux due to the strange circumstances of her growth, and actually switches gender upon occasion. [There's no real difference after the gender switch except for the change in build.]

Slayers fans may be interested to know that the Mazoku Lords were based on five demons from the Goetia. If you take a look at that page I linked, Bune, Astaroth, Eligos, Ipos, and Vepar each have sigils that match the Lords. They also have some similar descriptions in several cases. Astaroth is the demon that shares Fibrizo's sigil.

Drawn in ballpoint pen with no presketching, which would account for the sort of strange poise there, and a lot of the roughness.

I'm a Theistic Satanist, and study the Goetic Demons pretty much out of necessity. ^^ I've very happy to see someone drawing this Lady in a manner true to who and what she actually is, rather than a manga character...

One quick note, though:

"Astaroth is female here because the demon Astaroth actually evolved from the goddess Astarte."

I do believe it's the other way around. Astarte is Greek, while Astaroth is Mesopotamian. The former came after the latter.

Just thought I should let you know. ^^ Excellent penwork, though!

Hey, thanks for the comment. The name Astarte is the greek name for Ishtar, who is indeed Mesopotamian. The Hebrew pronunciation of her name is Ashtoreth, which is where the Astaroth variant comes from.

That's really broadly summarizing. It's hard to make a quick description of deity evolution, especially when the demon side of things come into play.

Glad to hear someone of similar mindset is out there. I don't have any word for what I am, I just liek demons a lot.

Either way, she is amazing. xD

Yar, demons are love. >.>; It gets rather annoying going toe-to-toe with religious fundies who are all "ZOMG EVUL NOOOO!" about it. People seriously need to do their research.

But yep. You're not alone. x3

DUDE! I'm a goetia researcher too There's some interesting material for sure. In fact, I've got an Astaroth and Asmodeus on my site so far and I've been working on doing the others for a long time now. Yeah, I love how they call all the angels "he" even when they straight up describe them as female - like Vepar.
