Description I'll be uploading a few scenes a day from my recent PMV about Darkstalker, which you can see here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHvsE4…

To me, this is probably the saddest scene from the PMV. Not just because Arctic is my favorite character either Allow me to explain:

At the end of Darkstalker, most everybody gets the short end of the stick. Foeslayer is imprisoned and killed over and over, forced to know that she'll be outliving her family due to the enchantment she's under.
All the Nightwings have to flee their homes, probably leaving a bunch of stuff behind, because they are all terrified of Darkstalker.
Whiteout loses her entire family, she literally has no one. She has her new crush, Thoughtful, but they've only just met.
Clearsight cannot go back to her family or friends because of her ties to Darkstalker; she didn't even get to say goodbye to her parents. Instead, she too has to flee to an unknown location.
And Darkstalker got what he deserved tbh lol. But he lost out on his futures with Clearsight because he was too power-hungry and selfish.

But Arctic...nobody cared about him after Foeslayer was captured. He was stuck in a place he hated, but he no longer has a reason to endure it. He wanted to go home but knew he wouldn't be let back into the Ice Kingdom, and besides that, he may not have wanted to leave Whiteout behind without any parents to look after her.
So he did the only thing he thought he could do: enchant his own daughter to follow him to the Ice Kingdom, where Arctic believes that her status as an animus-gene carrier meant she was guaranteed to be kept safe and alive. Arctic even hoped that he could somehow, /somehow/, rescue Foeslayer from whatever his mother was doing to her.

But Darkstalker stopped him. And he should have too, honestly, and not just to save Whiteout from a horrible boring life. I don't think Queen Diamond would have let Whiteout live after she laid her first clutch of eggs from whatever prince she was married off too. And like hell would Diamond have let Foeslayer OR Arctic go.
Arctic was just grasping for the last threads of hope he had, because at that time in his life, getting Foeslayer back was probably the only thing that kept him going.

After Darkstalker enchanted Arctic and forced him to kill himself, he didn't even get a proper burial. Nobody was left to care about him. The Nightwings certainly didn't, and Whiteout was probably too terrified of everything that had happened that night that she just wanted to get away from everything.

So as all the Nightwings fled their city, Arctic's body was left on the stage where he fell. And it probably stayed there forever too, until time turned his bones into dust. After all, no Icewings could enter the Night Kingdom to reclaim his body or bury him. He was completely abandoned and forgotten.

And that, to me, is tragic.

Malevolent and evil?
YEAH
Rotten and horrible?
TOTALLY
Deserving this death?
by all the gods no.Β
No, no no no no
he can’t help that he’s an animus.Β
But the books show that it’s not animus magic that eats your soul away, it’s the feeling of being able to abuse that power that kills you.Β
My poor, poor, poor little moonbud..Β

Ah, sorry but I'd have to disagree with all of that! No offense of course! I don't think Arctic was evil or rotten at all. He was just tired, unloved and mentally unstable.
Let me summarize my thoughts on animus magic and it's effects:

I am basing my opinions of the effects of animus magic mostly on what we see through Turtle’s eyes in Talons of Power. In TOP, there are multiple times that Turtle mentions having β€˜violent flashes’ of blood staining his claws, or flashbacks of hurting Chameleon when they took the scroll back from him. Here are all the places it is brought up (I may have missed some tho):

Pages 13, 50, 51, 79, 80, 92, 214, 215, 228, and finally, 272 where Anemone also admits to seeing the same types of β€˜flashes’.

So 10 instances in one book where animus characters are shown having emotional/mental issues after hurting other dragons with their power. It doesn’t matter if it was minor (Turtle breaking Chameleon’s nose) or major (Anemone killing Whirlpool).
They both had these same flashes, hallucinations, whatever you want to call them…. and Anemone’s seemed to be worse due to her harm being more severe.

Now, imagine what it must have been like for Arctic. He killed 6+ dragons from his tribe, at least one of whom was someone he knew and had fondness for- his teacher.

Arctic must have had those same kinds of flashes and nightmares all the time. This sort of thing would have torn him apart mentally, and combine that with lack of sleep and being hated and distrusted by everyone around you, even your own son……..well, yeah. It makes sense that he acts the way he does.

So using animus magic in NEGATIVE ways to HURT others is what causes the soul to come undone. Turtle didn't have any of the hallucinations until after he hurt Chameleon with his powers. And it didn't just make him think 'oh I have power I can use it', he had actual, real side effects from animus magic.

I am planning on making a video discussion on animuc magic someday so, be sure to watch for that too!

I get that, but since I actually freakin loved that response, can you explain when the soul reader says that Darkstalker is practically gone, even though the only really horrible killing spell he did was plague the IceWings, but he never witnessed the killing, and it was about 20 dead, and whndhcjen confusing myself I feel black holes opening uo help

Iron-Zing In reply to Stranger011105 [2017-11-25 22:13:45 +0000 UTC]

He did much more then that.

In Darkstalker when Fathom finds the hidden spells on Darkstalker's scrolls, it's shown that he's been tormenting and killing other dragons for years. He does little spells like making classmates he dislikes have a hard time or making Queen Diamond have nightmares about him coming to kill her... and then big spells like turning Indigo into the statue ((which he /thinks/ may have killed her, as in Moon Rising he has a line where he says 'I only killed 1 dragon, maybe 2)), and of course killing his father.

But the biggest, most HORRIBLE spell is this one: "Enchant this dagger to fly into the Kingdom of Sand and kill one IceWing every full moon, in secret, under cover of darkness-and keep doing so for one year, or until I summon it back. Enchant it to leave messages carved near the body warning that the Darkstalker is coming for all of them and soon they will all be dead."

Now. One important detail about this:

PyrrhiaΒ has 3 moons. All of which can be full, probably at different times.

That's a LOT of dead Icewings.

In Darkstalker's mind though, these killings don't 'count' because he didn't do them himself, in person. This is probably why he doesn't have violent flashes/hallucinations about those Icewings killed by his dagger.

Or maybe he does.Β  Maybe he does and we are just not shown it in the books. Maybe Darkstalker does have the flashes of the dragons he hurt, just like Turtle did. But his mind is so warped that he doesn't see them as bad things.

After all, he and Clearsight both saw his dark futures. But while she was scared of them, he was PROUD of them. He wasn't bothered by the bad things he would do because he thought they were 'necessary'. He sees bad things but doesn't think they are bad, and so they don't bother him.

However, the soul reader knows better. The soul read is not biased and tells him the truth.

Also when they enchanted the whatever they enchanted to make Anenome and Turtle so their souls didn't decay from ANYTHING, Turtle said that Anenome seemed much nicer (as well as more less-usey about her speels) and also Vulture wasn't (AND WILL NEVER BE) an animus and he was nearly soulless.Β

Iron-Zing In reply to Stranger011105 [2017-11-26 17:27:36 +0000 UTC]

The soul reader, to my knowledge, simply shows the bad things a dragon has done, it's not directly tied to animus magic. That's why even Clearsight had some white sand in her reading; everyone has done bad things, small or large.

Do you think it's only people with animus magic that constantly get those flashes? A bit of a yeah duh thing but why only animuses?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Iron-Zing In reply to Stranger011105 [2017-12-02 02:04:47 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I'd say it's only animuses that get the violent flashes. It probably has to do with the origins of animus magic, maybe Tui will explain it in the future

AprilSilverWolf [2017-09-03 02:21:24 +0000 UTC]

That was a really sad scene. It was especially tragic that no one cared about him, I mean seriously, he gave up his entire way of life for a dragon he loved, and even though he didn't feel at all home in her tribe, he stayed there for her. He even lost some of his soul and sanity for her, and in the end nobody could look past his destroyed self to see the part of him that sacrificed just to have a family that hated him, just to have no one care. Instead all he is remembered for is the insane side of him, even though he only got insane by sacrificing himself to save Foeslayer and himself from the ice Kingdom. It's tragic that no one remembers how he got that way, instead they all just see him as an iredeemable jerk who could never change and pinned that as his entire identity. I can really relate to Arctic sometimes

Iron-Zing In reply to AprilSilverWolf [2017-09-04 17:37:57 +0000 UTC]

Ahhhh you summed up my feelings on his death so well ;__;

He gave up /so much/ and yet, in the book we see Foeslayer asking him for more multiple times. Maybe if they had gone to a secluded island like he had wanted, things would be different. I'm sure that the weird schedules and distrust from the Nightwings, as well as the climate, all contributed to his irritable mood. If only someone had tried to help him and make his life better

I relate to him a lot too, as before I had my ADD medication I was very irritable and short with people, even people I loved. So I can understand how he feels in that aspect too

Yeah Darkstalker intentionally was a jerk to people, it shows in his scroll the most, where he did 'spells to torment classmates he didn't like in small, creative ways'.

Arctic is tired and unwanted and mentally ill and he lashes out, that's expected. Darkstalker is just an ass

Thinking about Arctic and what he could have been and had and what he's actually gone through makes me horribly sad.
Especially that last stretch of his life where using too much animus magic made him constantly mean and rude, feeling constantly guilty, and longing for home. Though his mother seemed the only horrible thing about it all.
It's like he got really sick and he just lost who he used to be because of that illness.Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Iron-Zing In reply to BrokebackBromance [2017-08-23 23:38:27 +0000 UTC]

Aaaaaa I know, like he thought he was escaping a bad life when he ran away with Foeslayer but, being in the Night Kingdom was almost worse in a way. Except he wasn't forced to marry someone he didn't like, so at least he had Foeslayer...

Yea Queen Diamond getting on his ass about everything definitely made him hate his old home, but he also hated the rules and expectations too, and how he was never free to make his own decisions. It's ironic that his life ended in that way too, being forced to do what someone else told him to, until his last breath.

I totally agree. I feel like using animus magic in a bad way affects you mentally, as we are shown through Turtle in book 9. So Arctic was likely suffering from those same side effects too :<
