Description Ok, so my thoughts while making this one, and how much time I used on each phase:
A little time -            Designing Ehrye: Awesome!
Some time -             Creating thumbnail: Cool!
Loads of time -        Rendering background: uh ohh.. hm... crap. O.o
Shit-loads of time -  Rendering Colour: oh god make it stop!!
Loads of time -        Getting rid of lines: FFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU-!!!
No time -                 Adding atmosphere: At least it doesn't looks as shitty now ._.
No time -                 Finishing touches: what?.. how come this look good now?

Conclusion: Art be trolling me.. and oh yea. here is Ehrye, Toa of Ice.

To be honest I think this painting is the one I am least proud of. Although the end result is not that bad, this is only due to the type of lighting one would expect in a setting like this. for example, since snow is usually just a white area, one can paint this by just spamming white, unlike grass that has shadows and leafs or water which is somewhat transparent, so both light refractions and reflections are needed to paint it. some things are just easily achieved visually when painting. This painting is fine, but it is lifted by the easily made effects and not the debt of my skill. It is boring to win a quiz game if your team-mate was the one knowing all the answers (prizes aside). That being said there are some things I am proud of within this painting. for instance the background, character design and the 3d-posing.

By the way, Ehrye's eyes are inspired/copied/borrowed/stolen from the artist and cartoonist . I love his style and his comics, you should definitely check him out.

Now about Ehrye. This guy is interesting. At first glance he would look easily bored and shy of others. He is a humble quiet and observing person, who prefers being alone and reflect upon everything. He is a strategist, while dealing with problems and extremely clever when focused. Though he usually doesn't seem much exited, he cares deeply for all his friends, and his sister. Yes,  he is (this is my world) the introverted twin brother of Vhisola, the Toa of water. The reason he smiles in this shot, is because he enjoys remote wilderness. ^^

I don't know when the next toa-splash will come.. these take a lot of time and effort to make (and more and more for some reason ) .. However I am also exited for the next one, cause its gonna be the Toa of Water. Vhisola. :] ... till then.

Sketches are up! Ehrye-Sketches

He looks great and you've done a great job on the ice, the shards look like they are coming out of the picture.

Ooo, great job with the ice! Ice is SO hard to paint convincingly, but you did a great job.

Thank you ^^ for all your lovely comments. Ice is indeed a difficult material to paint due to its transparent properties. Basically, what you see, when you look at clear ice, is refracted light as opposed to reflected light. light coming from the inside of the crystal .

Beautiful, beautiful ice effect. I love the little red flags, easter eggs from the past are great. I think that if Ehrye and I were to meet in real life, we could be good friends. He look's like he's got that kinda personality, from what you've given him. He looks like he's blushing just the tiniest bit too, I love it. The green pants were, honestly, quite unexpected for an Ice-fellow, but they work quite well.

Thank you Evil-Accret ^^ .. well as a wise master of digital painting, Feng Zhu, once said: "it is easier to paint an enormous landscape than an Ipad lying on a table" why? because detail-level is way higher when you paint something that is close. so if you want to paint backgrounds go big. really big

Oh you are another feng Zhu lover. Don't get me wrong, he is a great guy, and advice he gives is really neat, but for some reason I can't get into his videos.

Also, I want to be friends. Can we?

IRON6DUCK In reply to Evil-Accret [2014-07-22 01:11:05 +0000 UTC]

Well I am actually not a Feng Zhu lover at all xD (I am totally a Kienan Lafferty-lover though :d) how have you heard of him btw? ... personally I find Feng's art-style somewhat muddy in general and overly complex when it comes to design. However the man is very intelligent, makes various very good points, and is extremely skilled when it comes to making stuff with his digital pencil. ^^
also: friends? Sure Love new friends! I was actually already a bit intrigued by your art, and style so i'm glad you're asking (you have some particularly interesting traits in your art that I might want to take a deeper look at )

And I have to agree on your points about Feng Zhu, I feel the same way.

There's no better leisure for me than just geek over art or other interests with people.

no i'm referring to his personality.  In the story Ehrye was an unusual Ko-Matoran who was a bit of a nuisance to scholars like Nuju because he simply wouldn't shut up

IRON6DUCK In reply to JacobLazer [2014-07-22 22:54:18 +0000 UTC]

oh!... LOL. I didn't even consider that at all! you are totally right I haven't been using their "old" personalities at all... for god sake, I've even made Ahkmou a Toa! keeping his personality would be insane xD but it could be hell of an awesome train wreck :d Thanks for that question. I did not see that one coming. ^^ also thanks for the info on the personality of Matoran Ehrye. I dont remember much of these guys' canon personalities.
Ever since I was first presented to the "destined" matoran of metru nui I have been playing Bionicle-fanfic-time with these characters because I thought their role in Bionicle was unfair. They bring some disks to the actual toa and that's about it. one of them is even a traitor. and not even a threatening traitor just a pitiful traitor. In my head I honoured the characters by giving them a new role in my own story. and here they are the protagonists! Sorry for being a bit nerdy here, but this is the silly truth :3

Come to think of it, I was pretty shocked when you made Ahkmou a Toa...

I also recall that Ehrye was often used as an errand boy by scholars

yea.. in hindsight it was probably a mistake to show Ahkmou as the first Toa ._. must have disturbed and confused many bionicle-fans.

I like that for a humanized toa of ice, you gave him a splash of color with his green skii pants, that makes him way cooler/less boring. I'm eager to see the next one.

Plague-Doc-Matteo In reply to IRON6DUCK [2014-07-19 23:10:34 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome. Well yeah its so different than anything anyone else would. He'd be all white or white and light blue at most the way other's would do him, even humanized, so this really makes him unique and stands out amongst the crowd. Though I was slightly confused at first as to why he had green pants. I thought he was a Le-dude(Matoran, toa, etc). It wasn't until I read the description and remembered that Ehrye is the Ko Matoran from the Matoran of Metru Nui line that I figured out what's going on here. He's a humanized Ko-toa who's just wearing Green Snow pants.

"hmmm i wonder what element" xD.. sorry that was not to offend, I just find it really funny ^^ i got kinda the same problem goin on with this one: iron6duck.deviantart.com/art/T… .. something about the colour green and me... and its not even near one of my favourite colours!

Plague-Doc-Matteo In reply to IRON6DUCK [2014-07-21 23:06:50 +0000 UTC]

Shuddup. I know its just my eyes gravitated to the green first and foremost, then I saw the Ice and went "Wut?' Then I read.

You really do. Toa of earth and he looks nothing like one except for the background, without that there's nothing to convey he's of the earth element so I think you weren't very effective in that regard and I suggest revisiting him. With Ehrye he's at least got white hair, an ice sword and while his pants are green they're the kind of pants snowboarders wear, so it makes sense. Tehutti I think needs to be revisited. You don't have to fall into the typical tropes of the elemental themes, but do something to show he's of the earth element at least. Give him a different look make his clothes dirty and I dunno maybe give him a couple of tools or something I dunno. He really does look like an Air Toa surrounded by rocks.

3rdeye88 let me first say I adore your huge comment and I really really love all the feedback within it however I'm not even going to consider changing my character on the basis of your opinion or feeling . I'm not sure how much you'd expect that either. I am saying this just to be clear. This doesn't mean I won't listen to you . No honest opinions deserve to be ignored in my opinion. And a good argument is an argument regardless of who makes it. Yes, indeed, Tehutti looks possibly a tad to much Le-ish and I might do something about that later (or not. dunno yet), but only if I think he needs a changing. Now for my defence in this argument regarding Tehutti, I can tell you that he used to have only his shirt and it used to be Turquoise in colour. but I tightened the colour-scheme to black-and-green for the sake of simplicity. Since he now became so green he looked 'Le' I had to enforce the Black-ness, and so it was the perfect time to give him a black leather jacket! The t-shirt connects to his colour-scheme, while the jacket connects him to the element's colour-scheme... btw about your ideas: Digging tools won't do, but dirty clothing is a decent idea that definitely is usable so thanks, haven't really thought of that ^^

Plague-Doc-Matteo In reply to IRON6DUCK [2014-07-22 01:47:17 +0000 UTC]

Oh I know how you feel. And I want to be clear. I'm not telling you to change the character. I personally hate that when people tell me what I should do with my MOCs, and I flip out on them. Nothing infuriates me more than that. That's why I always make sure to add "I think" or "in my opinion," because its not fact, its just my opinion.

And one other thing to consider, this isn't exactly your character, this is your interpretation of a preexisting character, so its not quire the same thing as if this were simply your own character top to bottom.

I find feedback is best looked at long after the piece is done, like a couple of months at least. It kinda helps deflate the ego surrounding the piece. When you're just done with it, you're happy with it, you're proud of the piece and you like it just as it is. Any artist does, that's just the nature of the beast I think. So when people nitpick it or point out what they consider major flaws, I find you're not as likely to listen. But after you've moved on to the next piece, or even the one after that, or way later, you can come back to it with fresh eyes, and a new perspective on it, reread those comments and maybe see them in the piece long after the fact. And if its a piece that's been difficult and lengthy, then you just don't wanna deal with it for a while to. I've done all of this in my own artwork to, so I know where you're coming from with the feedback. Ultimately its up to you to decide what's applicable and what isn't. Its good that you're willing to listen to feedback and advice.

Okay then I say make the jacket brown or his hair. I think at least something on him needs to be brown, just so there's some connection to the element. Look at him without the rock background and tell me if that really says "po-Matoran"to you. It certainly wouldn't me, and I've been a fan of Bionicle from year 1. Also, that Jacket doesn't look black, it looks like a bluish color. I know that's shading, but it to me doesn't look like a black jacket. Jusssayin'.

huh... I think you just beat me in biggest comment. I feel weird now. That has never happened before. So that's how it feels..
NOW, I did notice your **#IMO** all over your comment so it's fine . I just needed to know for sure. emphasising on the fact that all you say is personal opinion justifies all your statements, yet it still feels weird to hear. I am not sure what the solution is. I'm experimenting with this too....
I guess it is the suggestions that are the most frustrating kind of feedback for the reciever. as an artist displays his or her creations, not all thoughts and considerations behind it are shown or explained usually. so to listen to a viewer trying to "fix" something in the art will be annoying. Viewers will often be tempted to do this (it's a common feeling) because they will interpret their own version of the creation through their own reasoning when they see it (and its errors)(I realise in this case you do this because I've used terms and names from bionicle). But your reasoning is different from mine and vice versa. which is the way it should be or everyone would create the same, and there would be no varieties in art world wide. You don't know my characters as I know them. so suggestions are nearly impossible for the artist to receive without also getting some negative feelings. I don't know if there are solutions to this, but one should always keep this in mind regardless. As the creator of a piece of painting, I am interested in what people see in my image and what feeling they get from it. But not more than that. in short: An artist don't want help he or she haven't asked for.

Another thing: "this is your interpretation of a preexisting character" this is probably where the root of our argument lies. I see my work as the other way round, though I have not said this out loud so much. From my point of view, I've created my own story and character with inspiration from Bionicle. Now one might find that lame and say "this is clearly bionicle, just with humans" and the funny thing is that i am not going to contradict that. My characters are mine but I display them as if they are simple humanized versions of their bio-mechanical Lego-counterparts. To let others enjoy them for that, because given the splashes alone, this could be the case. but in actuality I am developing my own storyline, for myself and for fun, and i simply hope that the transition between lego and me will be fun and intriguing ^^

On a side note: blueish jacket? huh. i guess maybe a little. well i want it to have some flavour to it, and besides I am colour-blind btw. so sorry if the colours are over the top in your eyes ^^' ... 'cause they never will be in mine! lololololol

Nope. im still da champ in longest comment XD
