This is my entry for the I Challenge You challenge in the category of Resources and Stock Images > 3D Models. ImaginaryRosseArt gave me this challenge prompt: I challenge you to create a gun-stock. Maybe steam-punk like. Something oldish, not the new type of guns.

I decided that I would not only make a steampunk gun, but that I would go for a rather ornate design. I learned how to make filigree, and I found it to be both fun and stressful to try to create swirly filigree patterns for the decorations on this gun. I was also inspired by Doc Brown from Back to the Future to add a scope to this gun. This project was a ton of fun, though I'm glad to be done with it, as it was a lot more work than my usual models. Still, I think the results speak for themselves. This was a great learning experience and I'm glad to have completed this challenge with time to spare! It was some good motivation for me.

The firing mechanism on this weapon is known as a percussion lock or caplock. This technology succeeded the flintlock, and was much safer and more reliable than older designs. A cap was fitted to a nipple such that when the hammer fell, the cap would go off, directing an explosion down the nipple and into the firing chamber, where it would ignite the powder. The caps used were not unlike the ones used in toy cap guns, though obviously they were designed more for the purpose of producing heat and sparks rather than puffs of smoke.
