Description Whenever I'm out on the hills, I use this big rock to help me point my way home. Sounds a little primitive, but I don't get signal up in the muirs.
Taken near the Afton Dam, Ayrshire, Scotland.

The lichen on this boulder, and the rock itself is virtually identical to what I see here in Tasmania, once you get a bit higher up (which is pretty much everywhere).

And here I was thinking it was just a northern thing! Perhaps it's something to do with dampness? Or the cold? It's definitely very damp AND cold here in Scotland, and you could find this lichen ANYWHERE! I've seen it on cars before
Don't quote me on this though... I'm nothing of a geologist. Just know my ways around the place.

Here are some photos from my gallery that show rocks in southern Tasmania with lichen. Sorry, they're all poor quality. The first two are from tiny old scans of film photos I took back in about 2000. These are at over 4,000' where it's often below zero.

This was taken with an iPad, and it's in a relatively dry, warmer spot at about 600', so it's not just alpine.

Th3 rocks in the firs5 two and possibly the third are dolerite - Tasmania has the largest dolerite outcrops in the world - but I checked and there is dolerite in your part of Scotland.

This is last one is on an old boiler, in one the drier parts of the state, virtually at sea level.

I've never been to Scotland, but my mum's family we’re farmers who came here from Scotland via New Zealand in the 1850s.Β

Awk, I can see why in all honesty! I consider myself very lucky. I cherish my roots.
But not everyone appreciates it; the classic British weather comes into play a bit lol.
