Description
Picked up an iPad Pro for myself (and an apple pencil which I actually bought first, since they're hard as hell to find) and have been playing around with Procreate. Painted the environment on it, but ended up taking it to photoshop to add the characters and touchups. The hardware's excellent, and it's nice to be able to sit back on my bed and draw more casually, but Procreate's tools still don't have the sense of nuanced control that Photoshop does.Related content

That's the one!
This is amazing for something done on an iPad, it's also very beautiful and creative, like you would expect from concept art landsacape, the characters have a nice dynamic also

Amazing work!
I'm finding similar limitations with Procreate for painting portraits. It's great to sketch on the go with the iPad Pro and Procreate definitely feels the best of the bunch but it's not quite there.

What kind of lack of nuanced control did you run into?
Also, did you use Astropad for Photoshop? How's the latency?

It's kind of hard to describe, but I figure it was mostly on the end of Procreate's brush options. It was great when I wanted to be broad and gestural, but making finer marks was a little awkward, at least with the painting brushes I was using. The ink/pen brushes were more accurate, but there was very little give to them, since they're designed to behave like pens.
I didn't use Astropad - I'd love to try it out just for the sake of experimenting, but I don't run a Mac workstation. I'll probably give it a shot when I get back to work after the holidays though, since we use iMacs in the office.

And I suppose calibrating the pressure sensitivity in Procreate didn't help? (I'm not exactly sure what you mean by 'give' in this context.)

Pen-based brushes tend to be flatter and more consistent, so they don't do much natural blending. Whereas painting-based brushes have the little pocks and holes that help underlying colours show through, which makes blending feel considerably better. That said, I didn't notice til now that you can swap the source image of the brush, so I might give it another shot later on.

Ohh, I see what you mean by "give" now. Very interesting. Looking forward to hearing about what you discover.

By the way, I've been using astropad at work. It's pretty fantastic. Doesn't compare to a proper cintiq, but it's good enough to work with. Responsiveness is pretty damn quick, and doesn't seem to decrease noticeably when switching from USB to wifi which is mindboggling. There's only two issues I notice about it.
There are only two issues, and both relate to the ipad itself. One is the smoothness of the screen (cintiqs give you just a little more tooth, but the iPad isn't primarily a drawing tool so that's understandable), and the other is that when you hover the apple pencil over the screen, it doesn't update the cursor position throug astropad - this is probably because iOS doesn't actually have a concept of a cursor, so there's nothing to update. It only changes when you actually touch the pencil to the screen. It's a little annoying and at times disorienting, but not unusable.

Some people say that a thin, matte screen protector helps the tooth and makes it feel like paper. (I haven't tried since I'm not sure whether I prefer tooth or smooth gliding yet, but worth looking into if you like that texture.)
So far my experience with Astropad is that it's a little slow, but I suspect that might be my computer being old. I'll have to play with the settings to see if I can get rid of some of the latency.
It'd be nice if there were a way to hide the cursor until it's being activated... Oh hey, this might work!:Β doomlaser.com/cursorcerer-hideβ¦

That never actually occurred to me - having the cursor in a different position while the stylus was raised was definitely off putting, but I just kind of figured it was something that couldn't be dealt with, since the ipad doesn't have the ability to detect the stylus hovering. Never considered just hiding the cursor when it's not moving - I'll give it a shot the next time I use astropad at work!
