Description A more concrete conceptual painting of the village I've been knocking around for a long while. I've done a few exploratory sketches over the past year, but this is the first time I've decided to solidly define the location.

really cool work. I've always struggled with architecture and perspective. Do you have any savvy tips?^.^

I think looking at reference is incredibly important. Right now, when you think of a tower, your mind conjures up a fairly simplified image of a structure. Pointed roof, cylindrical body, very much a disney cartoony medieval tower. That's normal, because we've evolved to simplify everything we see so we can process it more easily. Studying directly off of reference - pulling in specific details you find in photographs or from life and incorporating them into your work, or even doing dedicated studies of them, will help break down that natural tendency. You're already doing it considerably with your trees and mountains - those are complex and realistic, because you've had the chance to develop that area of your visual library. Architectural structures can be considerably more difficult though, simply because they are composed of so many forms that are often arranged in very specific ways. They're very geometric, with lots of right angles or specific curves. It's trickier to wing it.

Made some edits, dividing the shapes and giving it more structure. I also adjusted the comp. Β Thanks for the tips, I was planning on using this piece for my college portfolio but we'll see lol.

It definitely looks much better with the forms broken up. The structure is definitely still big beyond reason, but the added structure helps a lot. I think it's generally a good idea to include smaller elements like that within a large structure rather than leaving it smooth - the little details help add a frame of reference for the scale. The windows served that purpose beforehand, but I guess they just weren't quite enough. It's a lot like the little cut lines and access panels you see on monolithic space ship designs - they add a touch of human scale, so the viewer knows where they stand in relation to the massive object.

I imagine you're talking about my last piece and you're right it is rather monolithic. I had the same response on reddit. It was intentional for mood but didn't have the effect that was intended. You make great points about expanding architectural library through reference. I've been procrastinating architectural studies for a while.. but it's probably time. Thank you for your detailed, constructive response.Β

Those critters on the far left there?

That's not a raiding party.

They're just the neighbors!

Awesome work. Β I can't not be bothered by that bridge in the foreground though... that's like a 60-70 degree incline! Β how would you ever get a cart over that?
