Thank you for posting this! It's really helpful to see how you paint studies -Β

the flesh tones are really lovely by the way : )Β

Have you ever tried traditional media? It's been a while since I last used digital (I'll have to come back eventually) but it seems Photoshop is faster. How long, would you say, does an average hand or foot take in these studies? Your attitude seems very adamant. I could never spend so much time studying. I should, really.

Mmm.. I can't remember exactly how long these took, unfortunately. Probably about 30 mins on average for each hand in this set? The later sets got more detailed, so those took longer. I have used traditional media, and these could be done in acrylics, oils, gouache, or any other medium you're comfortable with. With traditional quick studies, you'd get to practice mixing pigments accurately and quickly as well. I wouldn't necessarily say Photoshop is a lot faster - it all depends on what you're used to doing. Just go for it, whatever the medium! Β

30 minutes seems fair enough. Thanks! Since I'm a dork, I've settled for ye olde pencil and paper. It takes less time (fortunately) since I want to get the structure going for me, especially in the foot (hands be still the more difficult). I suppose you are right as it comes to the speed. On top of that, who cares if it takes a little longer in the beginning! I'm gonna do the next set of hands in watercolor! And thanks for the resource. It's hard to find free useable pics in these amounts. I also like your actual work, especially the less hard-edged things. (It's getting late...)

What program do you use?

I'm having a lot of trouble getting the traditional look I want.

I use Adobe Photoshop in almost all my paintings. Getting the "traditional look" is difficult, and something I struggle with as well. The key is stopping at a certain level of roughness so you preserve some of the brushstrokes instead of getting too tight with the blending and details, which is something I tend to do. I'd also recommend experimenting with various brushes and brush settings to find ones you like best (that also depends on which traditional medium you're trying to simulate). Good luck!

Hi, I appreciate you showing me this, however, you must have been mistaken. This image is not stock. I used stock photographs as reference to paint this, but I did not allow the use of this painting as stock. In your description under your piece, you state that you used the stock images "with permission", which I definitely did not grant, as this comment seems to be your first correspondence with me. It's especially concerning to me seeing as you stated that the piece you created is for a client, and not just personal work.

I strongly advise that you use the photos originally posted as stock by the respective stock photographers in your work instead, as using these paintings is a copyright violation. In the future, you may want to check with the artists you source your assets from before using them in your work. Thank you.
