Description Today is the last day of the 2023 hurricane season in the Atlantic ocean, But there's this question I have been curious about and I'm always wondering. Will one of the hurricane names get retired next year in spring? My answer is, I don't know yet. The hurricanes and tropical storms caused little damage to the Atlantic ocean and killed little people, The hurricane season left 16 fatalities. I will be explaining about the hurricane names. If a hurricane itself is deadly, damaging or costly, The name of the hurricane itself gets retired and a new name with the same letter as the name replaces it for the hurricane season in 6 years. The recent names that got retired this spring in March 29 2023 are Fiona and Ian as both are deadly and costly hurricanes of 2022 and will be replaced with the names Farrah and Idris for 2028. I will be looking at each of the hurricanes, their categories, and damages. Here we go.

There was an unnamed subtropical storm in January this year that caused no damage and fatalities and was the first tropical storm of the hurricane season that started too early.

Arlene was a tropical storm to begin the hurricane season that affected Florida and Cuba and caused no damage and deaths.

Bret was a tropical storm after Arlene that affected South America, The Windward Islands and the Leeward Antilles and caused minimal damage and no one died from Bret.

Cindy was a tropical storm that never hit any land nor cause damage nor kill anyone.

Don was a category 1 hurricane which was the first hurricane of the hurricane season but it did not hit land, nor cause damage or kill anyone like Cindy.

Gert was a tropical storm that didn't hit land and did not cause damage or kill anyone like Cindy and Don.

Emily was a tropical storm, Just like Cindy, Gert, and Don. It didn't hit land nor cause damage or kill anyone.

Franklin was a category 4 hurricane that hit Hispaniola, Puerto Rico, Turks and Caicos Islands. It caused $90 million of damage and killed 2 people.

Harold (The replacement name for Harvey) was a tropical storm that hit Texas and Mexico and caused minimal damage and killed 1 person and left one person missing.

Idalia (The replacement name for Irma) was a category 4 hurricane just like Franklin, It affected the Yucatan Peninsula, Cayman Islands, Western Cuba, The Southeastern United States and Bermuda. It caused $2.5 billion of damage and killed 7 people, 3 people indirectly died from Idalia.

Jose was a tropical storm that didn't affect any land and didn't cause damage or kill anyone.

Katia was a tropical storm that never affected any land and didn't cause damage or kill anyone.

Lee was a category 5 hurricane (The second category 5 hurricane of the 2020s since Hurricane Ian) and it affected Bermuda, The Northeastern United States and Atlantic Canada. It caused $50 million of damage and it killed 3 people.

Margot (The replacement name for Maria) was a category 1 hurricane that didn't affect land, cause damage and no one died.

Nigel (The replacement name for Nate) was a category 2 hurricane that didn't affect land, cause damage and no one died.

Ophelia was a tropical storm that affected the East Coast of the United States and caused $450 million dollars but didn't kill anyone.

Philippe was a tropical storm that affected Leeward Islands, Bermuda, The Northeastern United States, The Maritimes and Quebec, The damage is unknown and no one died.

Rina was a tropical storm that didn't affect land and didn't cause damage and didn't kill anyone.

Sean was a tropical storm that didn't affect land and did not cause damage and no one died.

and Tammy was a category 2 hurricane that affect Leeward Islands and Bermuda, The damage is unknown and no one died from Tammy.

So in conclusion, I don't think any of the names in the picture above will get retired next year in spring as each of the tropical storms and hurricane caused minimal damage and killed less people, But my prediction is that Idalia could possibly get retired but the damage it caused is not enough to qualify a retirement especially with the amount of deaths Idalia caused with it's remnants. We don't know yet but we will wait and see next year in spring.
