In 16th-century France, widower Mikoto Uchiha, Mother of eight-year-old Sasuke, marries Madara Uchiha, a wealthy baron with two young sons Kabuto and Indra. She dies of a heart attack shortly afterwards. Before dying, Mikoto's last words are directed to Sasuke, which causes Madara to envy Sasuke and treat him miserably. While Kabuto is hostile and cruel to Sasuke, Indra is kinder and more respectful to him, though he often stays out of the crossfires to keep the peace.
By the time Sasuke is eighteen, the estate has fallen into decline as the Baron has no interest in farming and wishes to get back to the Royal Court as soon as possible. Sasuke has been reduced to a servant in his own home, waiting on his stepfather, Kabuto and Indra while clinging to his father's last gift, a copy of Thomas More's Utopia. While collecting apples, Sasuke sees a girl stealing his father's horse and unseats her with an apple. When he recognizes she is Princess Naruko, he abases himself. She gives him a bag of gold in exchange for his silence. He decides to use the money to rescue their servant Nagato whom the Baron has sold to pay his debts.
Narukos's escape from the duties of court is foiled when she encounters a band of gypsies robbing an old man. She learns that the old man is Jiraiya, a painter and writer, who has been summoned to the Royal Court. Naruko chases a thief and returns a painting, then returns with him. Meanwhile, Sasuke dresses as a nobleman and leaves to buy back Nagato, but the guards refuse saying he is being deported to the Americas. He argues with the Cargomaster for his release. When Naruko overhears, she orders Nagato's release.
Intrigued by Sasuke's mysterious identity and amazed by his eloquence and passionate pleas, she begs for his name. Sasuke gives Naruko the name of his father “Comte Fugaku de Uchiha", who died during Sasuke's birth. King Minato and Queen Kushina tell Naruko that she must choose a groom before the upcoming masquerade ball or she will have to wed the Spanish prince Gaara. All the noble families receive an invitation and Sasuke initially believes he is included. When collecting truffles, he meets Naruko by the river in the company of Jiraiya. Naruko and Sasuke engage in a lively debate before Sasuke runs off after he notices Indra searching for him. Naruko invites him to visit the library of a nearby monastery. On the way home, they are ambushed by the gypsies who are amused by Sasukes's outrage and agree to release him with whatever he can carry. When he picks up Naruko and begins to walk away, the gypsies offer them a horse. Naruko and Sasuke spend the night at the gypsy camp, sharing their first kiss and arranging to meet again.
The next morning, Sasuke catches Madara and Kabuto stealing his father's suit and boots for Kabuto to wear to the ball. After Kabuto insults Sasuke about his father's death, he punches Kabuto in the face and chases him around the manor until Kabuto threatens to throw Utopia into the fireplace. Sasuke returns his father's boots to Madara in exchange for the book, but Kabuto burns it in the fire anyway in an act of spite. After Sasuke is punished by whipping, Indra tends to his wounds and condemns Kabuto for insulting Sasuke's deceased father.
When Sasuke meets Naruko later, he wishes to tell her the truth, but is afraid she will reject him after he confesses his love. During a lunch with Queen Kushina, Madara discovers that Sasuke is the Count that Naruko has been spending time with. In an effort to keep Naruko and Sasuke apart, Madara tells Queen Kushina that Sasuke is engaged to a Belgian woman. Madara confronts Sasuke and accuses him of stealing the suit and boots as they have disappeared. When Sasuke insults Kabuto, Madara locks him in the pantry.
Sasuke's childhood friend Sakura goes to Jiraiya who helps free him, then makes him a pair of wings for the ball with his fathers's suit and boots. Sasuke arrives at the ball, but moments before he can tell Naruko the truth, Madara exposes his identity in front of her. Shocked and enraged over Sasuke's deception, Naruko refuses any explanation from him. Heartbroken, Sasuke flees the castle, losing one of his boots. Jiraiya finds it and reprimands Naruko for her attitude to no avail, leaving him with the boot. The wedding of Naruko and Gaara begins. Seeing how unhappy he is, Naruko calls the wedding off; letting him return to the girl he's in love with.
Naruko runs out to look for Sasuke, only to find out from Indra that Madara has sold him to vile landowner Orochimaru. When Orochimaru makes sexual advances towards Sasuke, he cuts Orochimaru's face with a sword and threatens to dismember him, but Orochimaru surrenders and gives Sasuke the key to the shackles that he forced him to wear. Naruko arrives just as Sasuke leaves Orochimaru's mansion. Naruko apologizes for her ignorance and proposes to Sasuke by putting the glass slipper on his foot. Sasuke cries into Naruko's arms and they kiss.
Madara and his Sons are summoned to the Royal Court, assuming that Naruko plans to propose to Kabuto. King Minato publicly accuses Madara of lying to Queen Kushina about Sasuke as Indra turns against Madara. Queen Kushina strips Madara of his title and threatens to have him and Kabuto exiled to the Americas if no one will speak on their behalf. At the last minute, Sasuke speaks for them. Naruko introduces Sasuke as her husband and Sasuke asks King Minato and Queen Kushina to show her stepfather and brother the same courtesy they had shown him. Madara and Kabuto are sentenced to work as royal laundry servants under their supervisor for the rest of their lives. Due to his kindness, Indra is spared and becomes Sasuke's gentleman-in-waiting. After Jiraiya gives the newlywed couple a painting as a gift, Naruko and Sasuke share a kiss.
