What I was referring to is a sand sculpture contest where the loser's sculptures get blown up. I saw it on the Travel channel (I think).

It probably is sand. Sand sculptors are getting so amazing that they can make incredibly intricate shapes with just sand and many hours, sometimes even days of hard graft.Β
