The whisper makes this less depressing - the sadness is still there, though. It reminds me of myself, not wanting to do perfectly sensible things just because it was someone else's suggestion . . . they would have to explain how sensible it was, until I felt so stupid for not doing it that I finally complied.
Childish stubbornness combined with the patience of age, in this picture. I know from experience which of those usually win.
