Its been a long time since I've seen such a dichotomy in an image. the chasm between the age and craggyness of the elder and the innocence and youth of the child in one image is riveting

How did you get such wonderful tones? I've been trying different methods of converting pictures to black and white and, while each method I find seems to come out better than the last, they still seem to be lacking somewhat.

Yes. Right now I have photoshop elements 3.0 and then photoshop cs3.

Ok if you try using 'channels' to change your image to b&w. Tick the monochrome box first and then adjust the sliders to get the kind of effect you're looking for. I use curves and also levels to get a good contrast. You can dodge and burn to achieve the effect you want too. Good luck and maybe just play around with those to see what you get. Let me know if I can help any further. I have no idea what I'm doing - I just play around until I get the kind of effect I'm hoping for.
