Description Robyn's eyelids were heavy as Petri walked beside the other horses and riders. She could tell a lot of people were tired, frustrated, and even scared. She was mostly tired, but not so much angry and a little bit scared. She was scared, what if there was no way out, what if it had already been sucked away, what if they never found a new home or got sucked up into oblivion as their world destroyed itself. Perhaps some slightly unreasonable fears considering they had only been looking for a fairly short time but she was too tired to rationalize it any longer.
Behind the exhaustion that the earthquake had brought a lot of people's tempers had soared, horses were spooked and not quite as well behaved. Words had been exchanged as well as bites and flattened ears. People were wondering where they were going, it was dark, people wanted sleep herself included. She could tell Petri was tired too and she imagined it was the same for everyone and everyhorse. Traveling at night did have the perk of it not being as hot or dusty out, but it also meant that she felt more tired and you couldn't see as well. The stars were almost unnaturally dim here, one of the most obvious signs this world was dying.
She was just about to let her eyelids close when Petri's head jerked up and the mare started to turn. Her eyes opened with a start as she saw the Queen's stallion bolting up what looked like a large hill. What was with the sudden hurry? The Breeding Master on his horse was close behind. Had they found the bridge? Was there some danger?
Feeling more awake now she watched as the column of horses moved hesitantly to follow the Queen up the hill. Suddenly the Queen's horse jumped, Robyn squinted, what the hell was she was jumping to or from? A shout came up from the front of the herd, and Robyn realized the Queen was suspended midair over nothingness. A sick feeling gathered in her stommach and it was like time was moving in slow motion. The stallion came down and his hooves landed in a flash of light. A ribbon of light appeared in the sky ligthing up what had previously been nothing, and the cliff the Nordanner stallion had jumped from. Petri whickered softly and she patted the mare feeling a bit shaky with relief even though she hadn't been the one up there jumping into nothing.
The light of the bridge brought her hope, the magic flowing through the air invigorated her and a destination once again in sight gave her and Petri both something to work for. The hike up the cliff was a slow one even though Petri was in the middle of the herd. During their climb up Rise and his rider Robyn had also pranced and danced their way to the middle of the herd along with their much calmer companion Candle and Alfred following closely but not to closely behind. As the group of somewhat white, and various other color horses made their way closer to the magical bridge Rise grew more and more antsy, hopping, bucking and eventually Robyn just had to get off of Rise as the stallion became too restless to handle.
Petri also seemed to be a bit more nervous, looking at everything and prancing a bit, Robyn patted the mare's neck and whispered soothingly to her. It was early morning but still dark and the stars still shone but the light of the bridge their already faded light looked especially pale. It was glowing, with a slight texture like a paving stone but the bridge was thinner than normal road and far too thin to be like any normal bridge she had ridden Petri on before. If the bridge was skinnier she might have also dismounted, an old fear of heights flaring up as she stared down the cliff over the side.
Petri swung her head to the side and looked up at her rider as if to say "You sure about this?" Robyn smiled tightly and straightened the mare's black and white mane nervously. "It will be okay girl, we will be okay, there is plenty of room for everyone, no one is falling off.. I hope."   Well if this was not going to test the bond between her and the mare nothing else would. With that in mind Petri and Robyn continued their approach to the bridge.
