Do I have to spell it out for you?

Okay, fine.

A stupid person predictably takes a comment out of context as a last resort to squeeze an insult from their tiny little brains. (Or, perchance, completely fails to see the context that the comment is in.)

A smart person responds to comments with counterpoints, like how logic is subjective and thus cannot be flawed, only distorted.

Im not trying to insult you, Mr. Smartypants. The internets is to srs for that shit. And since when did you judge intelligence based on someone replying to a comment on a website run and fueled by drama?

Are you trying to say that it is in the slightest bit possible to learn from something without studying it?!

You asked me what measures intelligence, I answered, so allow me to ask you a question:

What makes a human a perfect human?

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

TheCynicalPoet In reply to TheScienceNerd [2010-10-11 01:31:33 +0000 UTC]

Why, yes. It is actually possible to learn something without studying it. It's called story telling, and learning through trial and error. Do you think primitive man had books to study from to learn how to create fire? Do you think ancient tribes knew how to make stones into weapons by reading the latest issue of "Weaponry Monthly"?

Just a random passing deviant.

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

TheScienceNerd In reply to TheCynicalPoet [2010-10-11 01:41:53 +0000 UTC]

No, it is not possible to learn without study.

If someone tells you a story and you don't listen, you've learned nothing. In order to learn you must comprehend and actively think about the story you have been told, if you don't think and study the meanings behind the story than all it is is a story, you learn from study even if the study is subconscious.

You don't learn from trial and error without studying the errors, and, by that, wouldn't even learn from "Weaponry Monthly" without studying the lessons it has within it.

WHY MUST YOU MAKE EVERYTHING SO COMPLECATED?
excuse my english, my first language is spanish,
but you sir, are the ignorate one.
acting like you know everything.
seriously,
you may learn something without concentrating on it.
how do you think people learn english when they first come to america?
they watch tv
your not studying, your simply watching.
you watch and you learn
because we all learn in diffrent ways.
so, your ignorance proves also,
that no human is perfect.

TheScienceNerd In reply to TwelfthMoon [2010-10-12 02:01:14 +0000 UTC]

I must make everything complicated because it is in my nature to think.

In response to what you said, I had previously stated that study can be subconscious.

Study, at its core, is the path the acquiring knowledge. If no study is done, then no knowledge is acquired.

To watch TV that isn't in your native language is a form of subconscious study. If zero study is applied, then you would simply have the TV on in the background while you paid no attention to it.

I suppose, how I look at it, the human mind (and for that matter, the mind in general) is built to study its surroundings automatically.

As for you saying that my ignorance proves no human perfect, that is a silly thing to say.

I believe every human is perfect. When I say this, I come from a viewpoint that, since there is no objective measure of human perfection or imperfection, that simply existing as a human is to be perfect.

To add in my exact views: To be human is to suffer (I could go on about why I believe this for a long time), to suffer is to exist, and, again, to exist as a human is to be perfect.

Thank you for your response, I'll await what you have to say in return.

IchibanAlice In reply to TheScienceNerd [2010-10-15 21:06:15 +0000 UTC]

All humans are perfect, and all humans are imperfect, because there is no such thing as a bad human as where is the entity who decides what a bad human is?

And I have learned little bits of a lot of languages from watching TV in their language with the subtitles, but no studying was done.

An idea that suffering is to exist (?) is bizarre, but I guess rather interesting.

If you are discussing the difference between learning and studying, learning is to hear something, take it in, and use it in life. Studying is to advance upon what you already know, or maybe something new you're learning, and take it further.
In short, they are very similar, but studying and learning are different. Studying is merely the continuation of learning.

Now I'm on no one's side here, but I'm basing everyone I say on the basis that there is no God. I am atheist, so nothing here is connected to religion at all (in what I'm saying that is).

Basically I think in this conversation you are both being slightly ignorant to the other's ideas, there is no right or wrong here as none of us have any proof for our theories as humans do technically know nothing about why we are here, or what makes us good humans/ intelligent.

But going back to the start of this whole thing, I believe that IQ has nothing to do with intelligence and to call Jack's relative unintelligent because they were fighting for what they believed in, and got damaged, is completely unfair.

Now I think I've covered everything I wanted to say.
I apologise for butting in like this, but yeah.

TheScienceNerd In reply to IchibanAlice [2010-10-15 23:21:30 +0000 UTC]

"All humans are perfect, and all humans are imperfect, because there is no such thing as a bad human as where is the entity who decides what a bad human is?"

The intention behind that opening is clear, but the words chosen fight against themselves. If all humans are perfect, then no human can be imperfect and vice-versa. I think a better way to put it would have been "There is no such thing as human perfection and imperfection, because there is no entity that decides such things." That's where my belief comes in: Since no entity decides human perfection, the criteria for human perfection should then be as basic as possible. I find the most basic criteria to be existence, thus human existence equals human perfection.

"I have learned little bits of a lot of languages from watching TV in their language with the subtitles, but no studying was done."

Before I said that study is the path to knowledge, now rather than elaborating on that hows about we add something else on:

Study is the application of effort to attain knowledge, as I said before study does not need to be conscious effort: it can be done subconsciously through any number of means. If I could explain this in another way, it'd be that a person with great intellect would resign a greater amount of study to the subconscious, where a person with lesser intellect would require greater conscious effort to acquire the same amount of knowledge.

"An idea that suffering is to exist (?) is bizarre, but I guess rather interesting. "

I think a more elaborate way of putting it would be "suffering is to be self aware". I could talk about this for a long time, but, for now, I'll refrain from that.

"Now I'm on no one's side here, but I'm basing everyone I say on the basis that there is no God. I am atheist, so nothing here is connected to religion at all (in what I'm saying that is)."

That's good to know.

"Basically I think in this conversation you are both being slightly ignorant to the other's ideas, there is no right or wrong here as none of us have any proof for our theories as humans do technically know nothing about why we are here, or what makes us good humans/ intelligent."

Everyone's ignorant to some extent, but just know that I'm always searching for something new to believe. If someone presents me with a view that I haven't heard before I'll listen openly (Not to say that I won't challenge it, though), but so far all of the views that others have presented are ones that I have heard in the past, so I can't help but be ignorant of them.

"But going back to the start of this whole thing, I believe that IQ has nothing to do with intelligence and to call Jack's relative unintelligent because they were fighting for what they believed in, and got damaged, is completely unfair."

Firstly, IQ is intelligence so that part of your argument is debunked, but just to give you some benefit of the doubt, I think you're mixing intelligence and wisdom. If you willingly go to war you're an indisputable idiot, but many people go to war because they had the insight to know that it is the right thing to do.

"Now I think I've covered everything I wanted to say.
I apologize for butting in like this, but yeah."

Butting in is fine, you brought in some fresh opinions, thanks for that. I'll await a response, maybe you can change my mind on some things

Sorry to disappoint but I've said all I wanted to say and being the age I am, I doubt there is much in my argumental skills that will change your mind on anything.
Highly apologetic, but I have pretty much nothing to give back to this.

Apart from that IQ is ability to learn as opposed to intelligence.
E.g. My friend has and IQ of 180 but he only properly uses about 140 of it because he can't be bothered to listen in class, or learn new things. But his capability is very high.

And also, if you paid attention in elementary school history, you'll know most people didn't have the choice to fight. Though I do agree that having 'becoming a soldier' as your life long ambition is dumb/suicidal as heck.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TheScienceNerd In reply to IchibanAlice [2010-10-16 22:29:53 +0000 UTC]

No problem, your views were welcome. However, if you don't agree with what I say, try to say why not, and moreso try to defend your own beliefs. After all, if you don't know why you believe in something, why believe in it in the first place?

About what you said about many not agreeing to become a soldier, I said if you willingly go to war you're an indisputable idiot, not if you are sent to war against your will.

If you are sent to war againt your will then you're a victim of circumstance.

Oh, and I hope you don't mind me saying so but, if your friend has 180 IQ and doesn't use it, hire an MMA fighter to hit him so hard that hsi IQ drops to an appropriate level. Wasting intelligence is, in my opinion, one of the worst things a human can do.

Or, maybe you could take a look back at your previous comments, and see the faults with them. Studying is not needed to learn. I'm sure people learned how to move their limbs without studying their surroundings. I'm sure that creatures were able to breathe without having to study how to. I could go on and on giving examples as to how flawed your statement was, but alas, I don't need to be wasting my time, or yours.

There was no mental study needed here because there is also no learning process on the species part. In this case, the study was that of evolution and the learning was that of the most obvious and basic natural necessities for life to exist.
