Chances are I went through a subversion. It was just passing the borderline of success when it happened.
Which, funny enough, it says on the trope page itself that every game prior to MoF had an invincibility period as the boss would start exploding. Strange, but then I remember that I was playing the unpatched version of EoSD. =S
