In the Smokies, ivy is common. One of the prettiest ones is also the most dangerous. There is nothing more lovely than a poison ivy bloom, but if you get too close, we all know what happens next. Poison ivy grows along the trail in many places where ancient trees live. It is very important to hike slowly and carefully through these places. Combined with prolific stands of fern and mountain grass, it is a sight to behold, one worthy of a slow soft step and a light walking stick. Everywhere the ivy grows, one can easily imagine the woodlanders watching, hidden among the dense greenery.

When your travels bring you to America, I hope to see you on the trail in Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
