Description Well I finally got my first project done for my illustration class. The assignment was that we were given three random words; an animal, adjective and a character title which we were then suppose to illustrate into a kind of story. The anthropomorphic side of the object was to be as true to the animal's form as possible so hopefully I put this in the right category. The word combination that I received was angry rapper dog which I found kind of frustrating as it fit to well together and so I had no jumping off point really for a story. It was weird in class because I could come up with a ton of ideas and suggestion for other student's word combos then I could for my own. Everyone else got stranger combo's like Rhino Geisha Shopping which I thought was easy to come up with ideas for and how it would look in my mind.

This was done on coquille board with color pencils, total rendering time about 12 hours.

Damn Chihuahuas (~_O) (^^^^) all up in my grill! Actually, they eat them in other places (^W^), so no doubt they would be roasting on a grill.

I love this pic, never saw "gangsta dogs" in a while, usually just the "Homies" series (o_o).

Are you ever going to color this? It looks awesome as it is, but I think it would look even better in color.

Great piece of pencilwork, I can tell. Shading and details are really well done, posing and composition are also nice. And it is good to see some more animal-like anthros from time to time
I would only sugest to add some more dark shading/contrast because greys between characters and background are little too similar.

I think you need to up the contrast on this one (it takes effort to see what's going on around the poster area) and the "dawg" paw is lifted at an impossible angle for a dog (though not a human) giving the image an awkward sense of theme confusion (as if the head was just tacked on, rather than this being an actual dog rapper).

The pencilwork is very nice and the style is consistent. I think the main points on which you could improve have to do with the overall impression. Even though the dogs look funny, they have a bit stiff posture, the bigger one especially. Next time you might want to pay some extra attention to make the characters look more lively and the composition more dynamic. It's a bit flat now and the characters seem to be imprisoned on the paper rather than jump out of the background or paper.

You definitely have good finetuning skills, so I'm confident you'll keep improving.

"Angry Rapper Dog", WTF? Weird combination you got!

But you did well! Love the shading, and the rapper dog really does look angry. Lots of detail - great.

A point for critique - the shadow of the cross necklace looks too high considering the direction of the light source (at least comparing the high angle on the shoulder). I would think the shadow would be elongated to the point where it's on the stomach.

Overall, a well-polished piece!

I really like all the little details (like his 'dawg' rings.... lol). Were you just using a black colored pencil? If so it'd be nice for you to push a little more darks into the picture. Some areas that are really dark, even black, just make the rest of it pop out a lot more. You did a good job keeping them dog-like in anatomy, and you got nice texture on the fur.

About the category; this is anthro, but.... digital media? Really?

Ummm that is not the category I put it in, I originally had it in traditional, I am going to try and change it back. Weird that happened.

For the most part it was just black color pencil as that was the assignment but we were allowed to use a technical pen to touch it up in spots but that was about it. That coquille board is also known as stipple board and is really rough, it is great for smooth transitions in value but it is hard to get the darkest values.

Huh... I'd never heard of that before. How is it? Good to work on?

It is not to bad, I prefer digital art mostly but it does have good weight and it's texture allows for some pretty consistant values. The only real draw backs with it is that if you are using graphite or color pencil with it is that it is real hard to get your darkest values on it and because of the texture getting real tight details can be a bit tough but it takes to ink pretty well so a technical pen really helps in that area.

On another note, even though that the final render only took 12 hours it took much longer for the thumbnails, value comps, and final linework only because my class is only once a week and we were critiquing each stage. I think to help guide us in the stages of creating a real good illustration. BTW two of my classmates (both awesome artists) are in the club and hopefully they will post their own illustrations of the same project.

Oh, good! I look forward to seeing their stuff.

Personally I prefer traditional art, but it's hard to get it up on the computer.

Well one of them did the project digital since this was the second time he had taken the class. The other she did it traditionally but I think that I am going to have to talk her into putting it up.
