Description

This is an illustration for a fanfic I wrote. (It's a moment from Chapter 5) I did a limited selection of scenes from the fic as comic pages in order to test out different methods and styles of making comic pages. This is not and will never be a full comic adaptation of the fic! There are just a few one-off pages that don't directly connect! (also some miscellaneous illustrations) I know there are a lot of full fic-to-comic projects on dA and this is not one of them. I do not have the patience, frankly, and I admire those who do. Actually, for the time being, this will be the second to last page (maybe even the last page! because frankly the other page that exists does not look good and might not be posted!)

This page is using thin traditional lineart + full color + grid panel layout with white gutters. This was also one of the easiest pages to adapt visually because it's just people talking to each other.

Boromir has discovered that Gollum knows a heck of a lot about hunting orcs when they're sneaking around underground, and now that the priorities have shifted from 'withstand Sauron's massive army' to 'make sure no one is lurking and waiting to kill us in the abandoned structures, etc' this knowledge is at least somewhat useful! There's supposed to be an element of ambiguity as to whether some of these conversations are really just Boromir humoring Gollum to get him to talk more- because Gollum is more willing to talk about orcs than he is to talk about himself- but in this particular scene, that other guy has been hauled in and is having his time used and there's a visual aid that they're letting Gollum sit on and everything, so this is probably a real request for information.

Gollum is being as helpful and cooperative as his personality allows, because he is assuming that the generosity being shown to him in Gondor will be cut off if he doesn't start being useful at some point. He might also have found out that social reinforcement feels good & is trying to get people to call him a good boy, but he's not consciously aware of that if so, so it's not expressed in his POV.

By now, he has now recovered a great deal and is looking livelier and moving around on the page more and he's *sigh* talking about killing people.
