Description It’s a cold December morning and eleven year old Zephyr awakens to be howl of the wind and white swirls of snow dancing around outside oh is bedroom window. He jumps up from beneath the covers and runs to peer outside. “Woah! That’s a lot of snow!” He said out loud. Just then, his mother peeks her head into his room with a chipper smile.

”Hey Zephie beaars guess what!”
”What?”
”You have to guess.” She said cheerfully.

“Umm, well it’s snow-

Zephy’s green eyes grow wide with gleeful realization. “SNOW DAY! NO SCHOOL!” He cried, jumping up and down. He raced passed his mum and down the stairs. He began rummaging through the coat closest pulling out his rust coloured snow pants, boots, gloves, and ski jacket. When Ica finally caught  up to him she stood in the kitchen doorway as he sat on the floor, tugging on his blue and green light up snow boots.

“What are you doing?” She said chuckling.

“I’m getting ready to go snowboarding. I’m gonna call Mav, Cora, and Hunter to see if they want to come. Can you drive us mum?” He asked turning to look up at her. Ica couldn’t help but smile at her  innocent look in her son’s bright green eyes. She walked over and sat down next to him on the floor, placing a head on his head.

”Zeph, you can’t go snowboarding. At least not yet.” Zephyr looked at her with a defeated curiosity.

”But…but it’s snowing.”

“I know, peanut, but it’s snowing too hard. The roads won’t be safe to drive on until it stops, and they clear it away. We have to be safe. I promise when it stops and the plows have cleared the roads, I’ll take you, Mav, and Hunter snowboarding.” She gave him a sincere smile. Zephyr smiled back and gave his mum a hug.

”Okay. Hey, since we have to stay inside till the snow stops…and there’s no school, dad can read a story from The Great Big Book of Adventures!” Ica chuckled.

“Yeah, that is an option. We just have to wait till he wakes-

Before Ica could even finish her sentence Zephyr was tearing up the stairs into his father’s bedroom. “Papá, papá!” He yipped as he jumped on top of him, who woke and gave an audible “oof.” “Papá it’s snowing and there’s no school, and I wanted to go snowboarding but mummy said that I couldn’t go snowboarding and-

Claude slowly sat up. “Woah son, slow down. Now, tell me what going on. Slowly this time.” His voice was tired but he couldn’t help but look at his son, amused at his enthusiasm. Zephyr sucked in a breath.

“Can you read a story from The Great Big Book of Adventures please?” Claude ruffled his son’s wave brown hair.

“Okay son, but how about we have some breakfast first. I think mum might have started it because I smell something really good.” Zephyr took in a dramatic sniff.

”Yeah me too. Smells like French toast.” He said, rubbing his stomach in hungry circles.

When Claude and Zephyr got downstairs and into the kitchen, they saw Ica at the stove flipping golden, cinnamony slices of French toast. She glanced over her shoulder with wry smile. “I tried to tell him to let you sleep but before I knew it he had run upstairs.” Zephyr looked down and scuffed his barefoot on the tile floor.

”I’m sorry papá I was just really excited for a story.” Claude bent down to look at his son.
”It’s okay. It was about time for me to get up anyway.” I a just shook her head.

”Okay you two, breakfast is ready.” Claude and Zephyr took a seat at the kitchen table and she put the plates down in front of them. “So I hope it taste okay, having a French husband and all I am held at a higher standard.” Claude gave his wife a cheeky look and dramatically took a bite of the French toast and chewed slowly pondering the taste. All of a sudden he stiffened and made a face. Zephyr stopped mid chew and glanced up at his father.

“What’s wrong?” Asked Ica, a frown forming on her freckled face. “Is it not good?”

”Well you tried, I’m proud of that. But the taste isn’t the greatest.” Ica stood there not knowing what to say. Just then a grinned spread across Claude’s thin face turning into a full on laugh. “Oh mon amour, I’m just kidding. It taste wonderful.” Ica huffily grabbed an oven mitt and smacked Claude on the back of the head with. Zephyr immediately broke out in high pitch laughter.

“Not funny mister.”
”Gee papá, I guess that’ll teach you to tease mum.” Said Zephyr, still laughing.

”Thank you Zephie bears for taking my side.” She winked at her son. And a grin appeared on his face as he beamed and sat up little straighter.

”You’re welcome mummy.” Claude looked from his son to his wife.

“You two aren’t just crazy, you’re abusive.” Zephyr took the last bite of his French toast and stood up and wrapped his arms around his father.

“I know daddy, but that’s why you love us right?” Ica joined Zephyr and also wrapped her arms around her husband.

”Yeah, that’s why you love us.” Said Ica mocking her son.

“Yeah, yeah.” Said Claude dramatically. Anyway, son, why don’t you go grab The Great Big Book of Adventures.”

”YAY!” Zephyr pushed out of his chair and started toward the living room.
”AFTER you put your plate in the dishwasher.” Said Claude looking at him with an eyebrow raised.
“Oh, right.” After he had obediently put his dishes in the washer, he scurried into the living room.

“You know,” said Claude turning to Ica, “I think you get some sick sort of enjoyment being cruel to me.” He said, a cheeky smile on his face.

“Yeah, well you started it wily old man.” Said Ica sticking her tongue out.

”Yeah but you didn’t need to assault me with an oven mitt crazy girl.” Ica laughed.

“Okay okay, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have demonstrated an act of violence toward you in front of our son. But,” Ica pushed Claude up against the counter and leaned in to whisper in his ear. “I’ll make it up to you later.” Claude’s face flushed as she gently kissed his neck.

”Dad! What’s taking so long?” Called  their enthusiastic son from the living room.

Ica stepped away from Claude but gave him a mischievous smile. “I wouldn’t keep him waiting. He’s impatient, just like his grampie.” She said still smirking. Claude shook his head.

“I’m coming son!”

When Claude got to the living room, he found Zephyr sitting on the arm of eagerly holding a thick leather bound book in his hands. Between the pages was a bright red ribbon bookmark that hung freely over the top of the book. Accompanying him were their three pets, their golden retriever Roary, and two cats, Irish and Nixen.

“Well I guess you aren’t the only one waiting for a story.” Chuckled Claude. As he came and sat on the couch. Just then Ica appeared in the doorway with her hands on her hips.

“Were you really going to start without me?”

“Well we almost were.” Admitted Zephyr. “But you’re here now, so come hurry up and sit.” Ica hurried over and plopped down between Claude and Roary. Irish gave one quick hi pitched meow and curled up on Ica’s lap.

”Okay, everyone nice and cozy?” Said Claude as he opened the book. Zephyr leaned an elbow on his father’s shoulder as he peered down at the open pages.

“Yes papá, we are.”
“Good, so this story is called A Tale of Two Scourges.”

ONCE UPON A TIME…

“Papá,” interrupted Zephyr. “These stories always start with “once upon a time.”

Claude chuckled and craned his neck to look up at him. “Well son, that’s was a classic phrase for starting tales. But, how about you let me get through at least the first page.”

Zephyr gave an innocent cringe. “Oops, sorry papá, go head.” Claude cleared his throat and began again.

ONCE UPON A TIME there lived two creatures whose hearts had become bitter. One, a rat who was orphaned as a young baby. Left to fend for himself after his parents and siblings were cruelly torn away from him forever. The other a cat, bullied for his size, his sweet nature, and his care free personality. This is a tale of two Scourges.

”Hey boss!” Called Vitch from the alley.

“Yeah what is it?!” Cluney’s voice was sharp and irritated.
Looks like we got two bozos coming here empty handed”

Sighing, Cluney also known as Cluney the Scourge climbed down off his make shift throne of dirty tattered rags. When he stepped out into the alley way he saw two filthy mice shivering nervously. “Well why did you return with no vittles?” Said Cluney lashing his barbed naked tail. The two mice stood there, still shivering, eyes wide as saucers. The large, well muscled rat step closer to the, the mice making them cower in fear. His one good eye boring into them. “I won’t ask you again, why did you return here EMPTY HANDED!” Roared Cluney. Vitch shoved them forward.

“Well…you s-see,” stuttered the male mouse. “We had gathered everything up, to bring it here for you. But…you see…well…”

”OUT WITH IT!” Cluney screamed.

”There’s this new guy in town. Really scary. The word is he has been clearing out the whole block. Having his crew steal food from everyone.”

”Minchie don’t!” Cried the female mouse next to him. “You know what those cats said. If we talk, we’ll be brought to him and no one will see us again!”

“Oi, I’ve never heard a this feller before. Asked Vitch, eyeing Minchie up and down. “You heard a this guy boss?”

“No, I haven’t.” Said Cluney rubbing his chin slowly. “What’s this scary guys name?”

”I can’t say anymore. You head my wife. If we talk, he’ll kill us!” Cluney serged forward, grabbing Minchie by his collar and leaned close to his face. His fowl breath making his eyes water.

”Listen here, sonny. You’re gonna tell me what his name is and where to find him, or it won’t be him you have to worry about killing you.” He hissed through his needle sharp teeth, his barbed tail dangerous close to Minchie’s throat.

”Okay! He goes by the name Scourge. You can find him on 27th street. The big alley near the subway. Please don’t hurt us!”

Cluney stiffened. “He goes by what?” He snarled, tightening his grip on Minchie’s collar, making h8m squeak in pain.

”Scourge.” Repeated Minchie.
“Boss! He has the same name as you!” Shrieked Vitch

Cluney tossed Minchie to the side who hit the ground with a thud. His wife Camille running to his side to stooping to see if he was hurt.Vitch! Go get Mink and Tank. We are going to find this Scourge and show him who’s boss. He’ll learn not to steal other folks food or their name.” With that he spun on his heels, cape flaring behind him.

Once Cluney had gathered up his entourage, they began making their way to 27th street, ready to challenge the infamous Scourge. “Here it is boss.” Piped Mink pointing to the broken street sign. “27th street.” Just then, there was a yowl and a screech. There, limping out of the alley was a tan and white cat. Every rib was visible beneath his mangy filthy pelt, and fresh blood was leaking from a wound on his neck. All three rats and the stoat looked at each other.

”Uhh that didn’t look good.” Squeaked Tank
”Don’t tell me you lot are scared.” Said Cluney looking at the three of them.
”N-no boss. Not scared at all.” Said Tank standing up straighter.

When they turned into the alley way, they saw more cats, as scrawny and sad looking as the one that they’d seen, limping out of the alley. They all watched the rodent crew with weary expressions. All but one. Sitting on a stack of crates was a petite black cat, with a single white paw on his right front side. Around his neck was a bright purple collar, which had what look like several spikes sticking out of it. His blue eyes watched them cooly. Standing up tall and clenching his tiny clawed fist Cluney the Scourge raised his voice.

”Which one of you is Scourge?!” There was silence. Cluney looked around. Still no one spoke up. Suddenly, his barbed tail shot out toward the the nearest by standard. A male, thin and sickly. The tom fell to the ground with a howl, writhing and clutching his eye with his paw. Cluney yelled, louder this time. “I said which one of you is Scourge?! If you don’t come forward, next time I’ll do more than just blind one of you.” Finally, the small black cat that had been sitting on top if the creates, gracefully made his way down and sat face to face with Cluney. Now that the cat was closer, he could see that those spikes in his purple collar turned out to be dogs fangs, which had seemed to have been yanked out at the route. Then he saw his claws. They were sickeningly long, every toe, reinforced with more broken dogs fangs.

“I’m Scourge,” he said evenly. “And you’re in my territory. I suggest you leave, before there are consequences.” He warned narrowing his cold blue eyes. Cluney began to fume.

”Look bucko, I ain’t leaving until you tell me what you’re doing here. I was here first and you’re taking away all me vittles. Unless you want to be a dead kitty, I suggest you start talking.” He raised his barbed tail, angeling it toward Scourge’s heart. Scourge’s eyes slowly slid to his tail, back to Cluney. Like a flash of lightning , he lashed out at Vitch, sending him sprawling across the ground. He skidded to a stop in a crumpled heap blood oozing from a gash on his side. Then he rounded on Cluney, slamming his paw down hard on the ground, hackles raised and his lips curled back into a hissing snarl. His unnatural claws digging into the dirt.

”Listen rat. I don’t answer to you-

“Papá.” piped Zephyr once again interrupting the story, “This story is getting kind of intense.”

“Are you okay Zephie bears? Is it too much? Claude, maybe we should read anoth-

“I didn’t say it was too much.” Said Zephyr cutting off his mother. “I just said it was getting intense. I’m a big boy. I can handle intense. Come on dad, keep reading.”

Claude chuckled. “Well all righty then.” He clenched his throat and started where he left off.

“Listen rat. I don’t answer to you or anyone else. You don’t come here on my turf and start making demands!” Scourge growled. While Cluney and Scouring were arguing, Tank and Mink were at Vitch’s side cradling him, and shaking his face to try to wake him up.

”Boss!” Cried Mink whipping around to look at Cluney. “Vitch, he’s in bad shape. We have to get him some help.” Cluney ignored him, his eyes still locked on Scourge. “Boss!” Cried Mink again, more desperate. Cluney turned on him.

“Leave him! He’s as good as dead anyway!”

“But…boss”

”I said leave him!” Yelled Cluney. “We don’t need him anymore. He can be replaced.” Mink and Tank gaped at the cruel rat. “Get over here and help me. We’re going to take back control of these streets.” The rat and stoat just sat there, cowering and crying over their fallen friend. “I said get over here!” Roared Cluney. Still Tank and Mink didn’t move. “Fine! When I’m done with this feline trash, I’ll kill you two!”

“Well, well what a shame.” Purred Scourge smugly. “How unfortunate. Your own crew doesn’t even respect their leader. Guess you have no one to protect you.” Cluney shook with anger, then without warning threw himself at the tiny black cat. He danced away with ease evading the furious rat’s attack.

”Too slow.” Sang Scourge as he mocked Cluney. A raging fire burned with in Cluney the Scourge and he flung himself at Scourge. He crashed into him. A look of shock appeared in the black cat’s blue eyes, as he was knocked to the ground.

“Got you! Flea bag!” Scourged hissed and writhed underneath the weight of the enraged rat. Hissing, Scourge gave Cluney a hard kick to the gut with his back paws, fanged claws grazing his belly. Cluney staggered back but before he could right himself, Scourge was on him tearing at his face and dislodging the pirates patch covering his deformed eye . Cluney managed to strike with his barbed tale slashing Sourge across the shoulder. He yowled in pain.

The both of them broke apart. The stared each other down, chest and shoulders heaving.
Warm blood dipped from their wounds. As they were about to clash again the ground began to shake. Caught off guard both the rat and cat looked around as the earth rocked beneath their paws. Then with a mighty CRACK the ground split like a large gaping mouth ready to devour anything in its path. As the earth shook angrily, Cluney and Scourge made a run for it, flying out of the alley as fast as they could. As they ran the park came into view.

“Get to the open field! Hurry!” Howled Scourge, shoving Cluney forward.

“Ooh I like where this is going! They helped each other.” Said Zephyr, once again interrupting.

“Zeph, if you keep interrupting, your dad won’t be able to finish the story, and you won’t see where it’s going.” Chuckled Ica.

”Oh…oops. Okay. I promise no more interruptions.” He grinned apologetically. “Go ahead papá. Claude nodded.

As they surged toward the field they dodged falling trees and debris. When they finally managed to get to the field, a near by tree shuttered and with a loud groan it cracked, sending splinters flying everywhere. As it fell Cluney and Scourge were caught in the crossfire. As the tree came crashing toward the ground, Cluney’s tail snagged on a chain link, of a climbing net attached to a children’s jungle Jim. The tree was headed his way. Scourge halted and looked back his eyes widening at seeing the absolute terror of the rat's turned he was at Country's side in an instant yanking his arm, trying to dislodge him. With one final heave his tail popped free, but not without his deadly barb being ripped off.  The tree hit the ground with a thundering crash, right as they dodged into one of the tunnels of the jungle Jim just before it hit, blocking the entrance to the tunnel and sealing the rat and cat inside. The two of them lay there, panting and trying to catch their breath. As their rasping breaths subsided, Cluney sat up and turned to Scourge.

“You…saved me. Why?” There was a look of confusion in Cluney’s dark beady eye. Scourge didn’t answer at first. He stared passed Cluney, with a far away look in his sky blue eyes. Then he spoke.

”I know what it’s like.” He said softly.
Cluney Blinked at the tiny black cat.
“What?”

”I know what it’s like! To be trapped, no where to go with the threat of death pushing down on you.” Once again, Cluney just stared at him.

”Scourge I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Yelled Cluney, bewildered. Scourge took in a deep breath. And looked evenly at the large rat that stood before him.

”Before I be a Scourge, I was Tiny. That’s what my mother named me. Out of my three
litter mates I was the smallest…the weakest.” Scourge closed his eyes and grimaced as if he had tasted something sour. “Ruby and Socks, they would never let me play with them. When I tried they would bully me and push me aside.  One day, my mother told me about the forest, how there were dangers within it. Tough and scary cats that belonged to clans. One day I ventured into that forest, to prove that I was brave and that’s what I did. But when I came back to tell them, they laughed in my face. The day came for us to go home with the two legs. A boy and a girl came to see us. They went straight for Socks and Ruby.”

Scourges voice dropped to a whisper. “They didn’t even look my way. They didn’t want me, I guess. So.” He said speaking with more confidence this time. “I decided to leave to the forest. When I got there though three cats approached me. One of them was big, mean, and always had a snarl on his face. Tigersclaw.” The kitty black cat spat out his name and and dug his frightening claws into the soft dirt inside the tunnel.

“All wanted to do was go say hi, but they surrounded me, telling me to go back where I belonged. I told them I would but that wasn’t good enough for Tigerclaw. He attacked me. He knocked me over, bit my shoulder, and held me down with his paws, his claw’s digging into my skin. I was just a kit! I was terrified!”

As Claude was about to turn the page he felt warm droplets on his shoulder. He turned around to see his eleven year old son crying. Streams of tears rolling down his freckled cheeks. “Zephyr? What’s wrong son.” Claude’s brow creased with worry.

“Th-that’s terrible.” He stammered. All he wanted to do was make friends. He had no one. His brother and sister were so mean to him. And then Tigerclaw beats him up. That’s so sad.” Then to his surprise he hears Ica sniffling and wiping her hazel eyes. Claude looks at her bewildered.

“He’s right Claudie bears. All I can see is his shocked, terrified little face.” Ica’s voice broke.
”Are you guys going to be okay if I keeps reading?” Claude asked concerned.

Zephyr wiped his green eyes. “Yes papá.” He squeaked. Then Claude looked over at his wife who nodded and gave him a small smile and nod.

”Okay.” He turned the page and continued.

“He tore the bell off my purple collar, he said only ‘kitty pets’ wear them.” Cluney’s gaze drifted to the purple collar around Scourge’s neck, embedded with several dog’s teeth. “I tried to get up but he was too strong.”

“W-what happened next?” Cluney asked hesitantly, now fully into the little black cat’s story.

“He let me go, but only because one of that cats with him told him too. I was so scared. I was trembling, all alone I’m the forest. I couldn’t go back to the two legs place so I went to the streets. I tried getting my kitty pet collar off with a dog tooth but it just got stuck. The cats were mean and cut throat, but they saw the tooth in my collar and became afraid. They thought I fought dogs and I used that to my advantage. One day though, I was almost caught in a lie, I was told there was a dog that needed to be vacated out of territory. So they asked me. I couldn’t back out, so even though I was scared I went to face that dog. When I got there he saw my shadow which scared him and he ran. Everyone thought I had beaten him. They began to respect me, fear me, and it felt good. Eventually I became in charge. I became leader of Bloodclan. The cats in my clan stood by me and those who disobeyed  or outsiders that set foot on my turf and tried to overthrow me…

The black cat’s expression darkened. “I’d kill.”Cluney’s one good eye stared at Scourge, a slight shiver running down his spine. “ I had to have ice in my veins to do what I did. I expected that ice to melt, but I didn’t. It just got colder and colder One day two abandoned kitty pets came to me for food. Guess who it was…Socks and Ruby. My littermates.”

“Uh…did you…did you give them something?” Asked Cluney.

Scourge sighed bad if he were tired. “Yes.” He said plainly. “But only once. After that I told them to leave and never come back. They could die for all I care.” He spat. “One day, that evil cat, Tigerclaw who had attacked me, came to see me. He heard how strong I’d become and wanted me to help his Shadowclan.” A true smile graced Scourge’s lips. “That fool. I agree to follow him into the forest.”

“Did you help him?” Asked Cluney, generally curious.

Scourge bashed his teeth. “As if I would help him after what he did to me! No, I refused his offer.” He hissed. “There I cornered him, and he lunged. Then WOOSH!” Scourge swiped his front paw through the air, his deadly fang enforced claws swinging through the air. Cluney reeled and staggered back into the stone of the tunnel. “I killed him!” He snarled.

The stunned rat gaped at the monster that stood before, chest heaving and hackles raised. Cluney felt something he hadn’t felt in a long time. Empathy. He realized that Scourge was a victim of cruelty and injustice, just like him.

”Scourge.” He said softly. “I’m so sorry.” The black cats tiny face softened a little. “I’m sorry for trying to take your turf. I don’t mean to be cruel. But that’s how I got respect. Maybe if I were a little braver, a little meaner maybe I would have been able to save my family.”

Scourge looked at Cluney, trying to comprehend what he was being told. “I should have been stronger, my family died because a me! My ma, pa, and little sister. I tried to save them but I was too weak.” Cluney’s one beady eye filled with tears and spilled down his cheekd.

“I to fight but they cut my eye and the tip of my tail off.  I fell and couldn’t move. I was kicked to the side and blacked out. When I awoke, there was nothing left of my family but their blood. From then on I got stronger, learned how to fight, and steal. Eventually others began to follow me and like you, I became feared and kill anyone who got in my way.”

Scourge was silent for a moment. He held Cluney’s distraught gaze. “Well…” he said quietly. “I guess we’re the same.” They both stood in awkward silence, not knowing what to say. Then Cluney spoke up.

“How about…we team up.” He said meekly. Scourge cocked his head and narrowed his sucky blue eyes.

”Team up, you know work together to get out of here. I bet you want out as bad as I do.”

Scourge took a deep breath. “Very well. We shall work together. So, do you have any ideas?”

Cluney scratched his chin. Then snapped his fingers. “Got it! I can tunnel out of here and to the other side. Then when I get there I can move the tree! It’s brilliant!”

Scourge stared at the large rat in disbelief. “You can’t move a tree! You’re too small!”

Cluney have Scourge a small smile. “I know, but I have to try. You saved me. Now it’s my turn. I won’t rest until we’re both out safe and sound.” Scourge looked at Cluney. For once, that cold frigid ice that made its home in the little black cat’s heart, had begun to melt. “I’ll be back, don’t worry.

About an hour had passed since Cluney had left to try to figure out how to get Scourge out. He probably won’t come back for me. Thought Scouring, slapping his paw on the ground. Why would anyone come back for me, I’m horrible. Snapping Scourge out of his thoughts, he heard a noise, like rocks grinding against each other. He looked up to see the trunk blocking the entrance to the tunnel trembling. Scourge heard Cluney’s voice from outside.

”Alright boys! Put your backs into it!” He heard several voices, straining as the tree began to rock again. “Come on! We can do this! We’ve got to save Scourge. The tiny black cat’s widened. “He came back…” he whispered to himself.

“Cluney! Cluney! I’m here!“ Cried Scourge as loud as he could. He heard a chorus of strained cries and the trunk shook and light began seeping through the crack.

”One last push!” He heard Cluney yell through gritted teeth. Just then there was a loud crack and the tree split into, sending splintered wood flying into the tunnel. Scourge put his one white paw up to shield his eyes, to prevent the debris getting in them. When he opened them, he saw Cluney reached his paw inside to grab Scourge. “Come one buddy, you’re free.” Scourge grabbed his paw, careful not to dig his fanged claws into his skin. When he was clear out of the tunnel, he saw several rats, and some of his clan cats standing around him. Bones walked up to him, and put a paw on his shoulder, a toothy grin on his scared face.

“Glad to have you back boss.” Scourge was too stunned to respond. Then one of Cluney’s crew rats, Scourge recognized him as Mink, walked up to him.

“If it were me, I would have left you for dead.” He said, his face stern. “But Cluney told me that I didn’t have a choice but to come rescue you. I don’t know what went on between you in that tunnel but Cluney seems like a different rat.” Then Mink’s face softened. “He’s more caring, not as harsh as he was. He was really worried about you.” Scourge couldn’t believe what he was hearing.

”Thank you for coming to get me out.”
”No worries mate.”

Mink patted him on the shoulder and went to go join the others. Scourge looked at Cluney, as he smiled and paled around with the cats from his clan. He padded up to where they were all standing.

“Hey guys, could I have a minute with Cluney?” The cats nodded and left Scourge and Cluney to have a chat. “Cluney the Scourge,” began Scourge with a faint smile gracing his sharp features. “I guess you’re not so bad after all.”

Cluney chuckled, “I guess not mate.”

Scourge looked at Cluney as he gave him a big toothy grin. “Thank you.” He said softly. For so long I have been alone…no one saw the real me or helped me, so I took it by force. I had support but only because they were afraid of me. But you…you came back for me. Scourge’s voice broke a little. “Even when I hurt you…and…and I probably killed your friend an-

The big rat cut him off and put a paw on his head. “It’s alright mate. No hard feelings. Besides Vitch is alright see.” He pointed at the little brown rat. Scourges turned to see him waving at them. His torso was wrapped in bandages but he had a cheerful smile on his scruffy face. “And I…” Cluney looked down remorseful. “I blinded one of your guys. I’m sorry.” He murmured. “But Scourge, I know we’ve had our spat, but you and me are one and the same. You’re my mate now, and we’re on the same side .” He playfully punched him in the shoulder.

Scourge felt a shudder in his chest. The ice that was there in his heart, getting colder and colder, had melted. His sky blue eyes filled up with tears and he cried, resembling the little black kitten Tiny, that was once him. He threw himself at Cluney and leaned against him catching him off guard. Then Cluney the Scourge hugged him, tears falling from his one good eye. When they broke the hug Scourge wiped his small face.

I have an idea. What if we find a place, large enough for the both of us. We can share the space and our food too! We won’t steal from each other or other strays. We can live in peace, and instead of scaring others, we’ll help them!

Cluney slowly nodded his head then turned and shouted to everyone around. “Fellow rats and clan of Scourge! For the longest time, we have stole food from others, hurt them, and raised hell wherever we went. But no more! Scourge of Blood Clan and I Cluney the Scourge of Ratagan Crew will now join forces.” Then Scourge chimed in, raising his voice.

”We will no longer steal, hurt, or intimidate others! We will work as one, and help those who need it!” There was silence at first then Vitch stood up, wincing a bit but nonetheless jumped up and cheered.

“Woohoo! Yeah!” The cats of Blood Clan and the rats of Ratagan Crew one by one began to cheer as well. As the cheering increase, the tiny black cat known as Scourge, and the large known as Cluney the Scourge turned to each other and grinned. Then they threw their arms over each other and watched their not only their clan and crew, but their family celebrate the new arrangement with excited smiles plastered all over their faces.

This, was the tale of two Scourges.

As Claude closed the book, Zephyr was clapping his hands eagerly. “I loved that story so much. I’m happy that Cluney the Scourge and Cat Scourge became friends and got second chances. He turned to look at his mother then his father. “Everyone deserves a second chance…” he said softly. “Even when they’ve done bad things. Sometimes they’re just hurt and have been treated cruelly. Sometimes they just need a friend, someone to care about them.” Zephyr’s parents looked at their son, warmed by his kind and loving nature. Then Ica pulled reached over Claude and pulled him off the arm of the sofa.

”My little peanut,” she said squeezing him tight. “I love you so much. Don’t ever stop seeing the good in others okay?”

”Okay mum, I won’t but you’re squishing me!” Ica let go of them and he dramatically put on a show of gasping for air. “Oh stop, I didn’t hug you that tight.” He started gasping some more, then started giggling.  Ica shoved him playfully off her lap and in to Claudes.

”Dad, mum’s abusing me,” he chortled looking up at Claude.

”Well son, all I have to say is now you know how it felt when you and mum were abusing me in the kitchen involving oven mits.” He said, a smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth.

”Daad that was out of love.” Retorted Zephyr. Claude looked down at his son, who was flat on his back on top of his lap. Then he ruffled his brown wavy hair.

“Oh alright, I’ll help you.” He reached over and playfully grabbed his wrestling her off the couch and onto the ground. She squealed and tried to fight him off giggled the whole time. Zephyr laughed so hard his stomach began to hurt.

“Geter dad!”

Claude pinned Ica to the ground, flat on her back, and peered down at her. “Got you, mon amour.”

Ica smirked up at him. “I guess you did.” Claude smirked back and leaned down to kiss his wife on he lips, causing  Zephyr to quickly cover his eyes.

”YUCK! Do you guys always have to turn things all mushy! That’s gross.” Claude un pinned Ica and they sat up chuckling. Then Ica heard plows outside and realized that it had stopped snowing.

“Hey Zephie Bears guess what! It sopped snowing, do you want to go snowboarding now? I’ll take you and we can pick up your friends.

A huge grin appeared on on his freckled face. “Yeah!” He cried pumping a fist up in the air. “I’ll got get ready!” In an instant he zoomed into the kitchen to put his gear on, leaving his parents in the living room still sitting on the floor.

”I love that boy, he’s got a good heart but he’s got spunk too.” Said Claude.

“Me too, even though he can be a little dramatic.”
”Yeah like you.” Claude threw his wife a cheeky smile.

”Claude!” Ica threw herself at her husband. This time it was her who pinned him. “Got you.” A devious grin crept across her face as she looked down at him with piercing hazel eyes.

“Guess you do.” He said smirking. This time it was Ica leaning in to kiss him, entangling her fingers in his gray hair, making him sigh and smile through the kiss. Then they heard Zephyr’s voice.

“You guys better not be kissing or what not in there!” His parents giggled as Ica let Claude up, and together they headed for the kitchen to wear they found their son sitting on the floor, once again tugging on his blue and green snow boots.
