Description
It was Monday morning, and Eli had hardly gotten any sleep. For four months he has been dating and older woman named Cliona Frollo-Tremaine. After meeting her twin brother and his family for the first time after find out they were separated at birth, she decided to come back to Aurora Oregon with them, to have a fresh start with her new found family. After settling down in her new home, she hired a thirty one year old landscaper named Eli Deslauriers. During that time, they began to become very fond of each other and soon came to have feelings for each other. Now, four months later, Eli knew that Cliona was the one that he wanted to speed the rest of his life with. First, however, he needed to make sure that it was alright with her family. And ask them if it was okay to have her hand in marriage.Today’s the day. Eli thought to himself. I’m so nervous. What if…what if they don’t approve of me marrying her. And even if they say yes, what if…she doesn’t want to marry me. Just then, his phone rang. Jolting him out of his thoughts. He reached over and peered at his phone screen. It was his childhood best friend, Ezra. Though Eli moved from Washington D.C. two years ago, the two of them were still very close and often kept in touch. Ezra had been supportive of Eli and Cliona’s relationship, even with their age gap. Now that he was calling, it would be the perfect time to tell him his plans. But not only that, but tell him that he wanted him in the wedding.
He slid the button on his phone over and answer. “Hey dude what’s up?”
“Hey, so wanted to know, there is this skateboarding contest coming up. And wanted to ask you if you’d want to be my partner. I know you’re all they way over there in Oregon, but get this. We can compete as a team even though we’re in different states. See it’s a national competition so al we have to do is win all our tournaments. Then we would have to meet up for the final competition but I’m sure you don’t mind flying over for a visit? That way too you can visit your folks and your sister.” Finished Ezra. Eli, who was only half listening was quiet for a moment, his mind occupied with proposing to Cliona. “Eli? You there?”
Eli gave his head a quick shake, his locks flying around his face. “Huh? Oh yeah I’m here. So uh…speaking of visits, I was actually wondering if you’d want to come visit me?”
Ezra pursed his lips. ”I would but the finals are here in D.C. So, you’d have to come here.”
”Actually that’s not the reason I want you to come. As you know, me and Cliona have been dating an-”
”Ah yes, you’re mature maiden.” Said Ezra, playful mockery in his voice. “How is she? Wait you two didn’t break up did you?”
”What! No! It’s kind of the opposite actually. I love this woman so much. Ezra, I think…no I know she’s the one. I’m going to ask her to marry me. Well after I check with her brother and her sister-in-law. I mean, I can’t ask her dad because he’s…well you know.”
Ezra smiled. “Well then, I wouldn’t be your best friend if I were to stand in the way of that. I say go for it.”
Relieved that his best friend supported him, Eli proceeded to ask him if he would like to be a part of his wedding. “The reason I was asking if you could come visit is that…I want you to be my best man…along with Claude. I mean I couldn’t decide. You’ve been my best friend since elementary school. But then Claude, well he was so accepting of me. He is very protective of his sister yet, he trust me with her, with her heart, and I’m thankful for that. Personally I think two best mans are better than one. You know, incase I faint, I have two of you to catch me.”
Ezra laughed out loud. “Well I guess that's true. Fainting I can handle, just don’t hurl. Yuck. Anyway does this mean you’re out for the skateboard tournament? The registration forms have to be submitted by the end of the month. But, no pressure! I know if everything goes according to plan, you’ll be planning a wedding. Eli thought for a moment. He really wanted to be there for his best friend, but he also wanted to let the love of his life know that she was the one. After Eli didn’t respond right away Ezra knew he had his answer. “Eli, go get your girl. I’m sure there will be other skateboard tournaments, but one chance to tell someone how you really feel.”
Eli let out a sigh of relief. “Thanks dude. But how about if she says no we enter that tournament.”
”She’s not gonna say no. Cliona loves you. She’s not like Tanya. She’ll say yes for sure.” Said Ezra.
“I hope you’re right.”
”I am.” Said Ezra, rubbing his knuckles on his chest then blowing on his nails like he’d just filed them.
”Okay, now I have to talk to her family. Which I have to call them next. Wish me luck.”
”Good luck Eli, and count me in, for being your best man.”
”I’d have it no other way. By man.”
”Bye.”
After Eli hung up, Ezra, he took in a deep breath and began dialing his girlfriend’s brother. It rang and rang then he got his voicemail. “Why does this many never answer his phone.” Said Eli aloud as he dragged his palm down his face. Guess it’s Ica. Next he dialed his sister-in-law. Her phone randomly twice before she answered.
“Hello?” Ica placed the phone between her shoulder and ear as she readied a bottle for Zephyr.
”Hey Ica. Is Claude around? I called him and he didn’t answer his phone…again. I need to ask him something. Actually I need to ask the both of you something…but I don’t want to do it over the phone.”
Ica tilted her head. “Oh..okay. CLAAUUUDE!” Eli cringed as Ica, who apparently forgot that Eli’s ear was right up to the speaker as she Yelled for husband.
Claude quickly came downstairs. “Yes mon amour what is it are you okay?”
”Yeah I’m fine. Eli tried calling you but you didn’t answer. He wants to ask us something.” She put him on speaker and set the phone down on the table.
Claude tilted his head. “Oh. What’s up Eli. Is everything okay?”
Eli nodded slowly. ”Yeah everything is good…I just needed to ask…or talk to you about something...important. But not over the phone. How about we go get some breakfast at Sunny Eggs. My treat.”
A flash of concern flashed in Claude’s dark gray eyes but he didn’t ask if something was wrong.
“Well okay Eli. Breakfast sounds good. What time should we meet you?”
”9:00 is good.”
“What about Zephie bears.” Said Ica as she dabbed some milk on her wrist to make sure it wasn’t too hot. “Do we need to get him a baby sitter?”
”Nah, it’s about is aunt anyway so…” Eli clapped his hand over his mouth, as if trying to force the rest of the sentence from escaping. He didn’t mean for his words to flow out so easily.
Claude’s eyes widened a bit. “It’s about my sister?”
Eli ran his fingers through his messy dreadlocks and looked around as if I response would pop out of thin air. “Well yeah so I’ll see you guys at nine. Gotta go. Have another call coming in.” He lied.
The Frollos heard a dial tone as Eli quickly hung up. They both looked at each other not sure what just happened. “Well okay then. That was odd.” Said Ica slowly. “But,” she shrugged cheerfully. “It’s free breakfast so.” She grinned and scurried with upstairs with Zephyr to go get ready.
Claude stood there in the living room a little unsure of how this talk with his brother-in-la was going to go. And the way he had mentioned Cliona, then quickly hung up gave him a funny feeling. But none less, he would find out soon enough when him his family met up with Eli at the restaurant.
When the Frollos pulled up to Sunny Eggs, they saw Eli’s bright green corvet already was already pulled into a parking space. When they entered the restaurant they saw Eli sitting on one of the benches waiting for them. He looked deep in thought as he was absent mindedly wringing his hands.
Claude leaned over to whisper in his wife’s ear. “He looks off. I wonder if something is wrong. He was acting strangely on the phone too.”
Ica nodded. “I know but, let’s see how breakfast goes.” Claude nodded and they made their way over to Eli with Zephyr in his car seat carrier hanging off his mother’s arm. “Hey Eli. He startled as if Ica had deliberately tried to scare him. “Are…you okay?” Asked Ica slowly, cocking her head.
“Yeah…yeah. Come let’get a table.” Eli stood up and made his way to the waitress. The Frollos glanced at each other but just followed after him. The waitress brought them to a booth near a window. Ica put Zephyr in first, setting his car seat carrier closest to the window, and Claude slid in next to Eli.
“Hi there, my name is Aretha, I’ll be your waitress today. Can I get you three started off with some drinks?” Asked the waitress sunnily.
“I’ll have water and coffee.” Started Ica.
“I’ll have the same.” Said Claude.
Eli sat there as if he hadn't heard Aetha. “And you sir?”
“Huh? Oh same as them.” Th waitress nodded with a smile and took off to grab their beverages.
“Okay.” Started Claude. “What’s going on? You’ve been acting weird all morning?”
“I know I know.” It's just that I’m nervous.” Said Eli, looking at him.
“About what?” Claude scanned Eli’s face.
“Eli took a deep breath. It's about…Cliona.”
Claude’s heart faltered in his chest. “What about her? Is she okay? You…aren’t thinking of breaking up with my sister are you?” There was an edge to Claude’s voice that made Eli even more nervous.
“No!” His voice came out louder than he expected and some of the diners sitting close to them turned and look. Claude shrank back a bit. “No.” He said again, his voice quite this time. “I would never in a million years break up with your sister. I love her. And...that’s why I wanted to talk to you two. I want to ask if I could, have her hand…in marriage.” Eli looked from Claude then to Ica. His heart was hammering in his chest but his gaze didn’t waver. “Please. I can’t live without her. She makes me happier than anything.”
The Frollo couple glanced at each other. Then back at Eli. His face was almost pleading but they waited patiently for their answer. Ica spoke first. “Cliona’s been so happy. She has a glow about her that doesn't seem ever dim. She talks about you all the time. And I can see how much you love her too. And little Lucifer loves you too.” I ca smiled. “So…I give you my blessing to marry my sister-in-law.”
Eli’s heart slowed a bit, but he still had to wait for Claude’s answer. He knew how protective he was over his sister and if he didn't give him his blessing, he would be absolutely crushed. Claude looked at him for a couple for a few moments. His face unreadable. Eli felt as if he might faint from the pressure. “My sister is head over heels for you. Like my wife said, I have never seen her so happy. And if I were to deprive her of that happiness, I would be the worst brother in the world. “ Then Claude’s face sofented. “So, Eli, I would lie nothing more to give you my blessing marry my sister.” Ica grinned at her husband happy that he agreed with her and Eli jumped out of his seat with joy once again causing a spectical with all the diners.
“Thank you!” You've just made me the happy man alive!”
Claude laughed. “Okay, okay, just sit down before we get kicked out.” Eli sat down but the enormous smile remained plastered on his face. “Eli.” Claude looked at him and his expression tuned stern the opposite of what it had just been. “I was happy to give you my blessing but you better not hurt my sister. If you do then we will have a problem. Do you understand that.” Eli gulped as Claude’s dark gray eyes burned into his pale brown ones.
“Y-yes Sir.”
Once again, his expression turned friendly. “Good. Hey…that was kind of fun.” Said Claude cheerfully.
“What was fun?” Asked Ica.
“Intimidating him. When I asked Ica’s father if I could, marry her, I thought he was going to hit me. But he eventually said yes even though he didn't like me at first. But he said if I hurt her, him and her brother would kill me.”
“Um…” Eli didn't quite know what to say.
“Don’t worry. I won’t kill you. I might make your life miserable but no killing.” When he saw the way Eli was eyeing him Claude tittered. “I’m teasing. But promise me you’ll take care of my sister. I love her very much and I don’t want to have her go through what she went threw with her ex-”
“Don’t you dare!” Said Eli, once again raising his voice. “Claude reeled in his seat and Ica jumped at his sudden outburst. Zephyr mewled and Ica took him out of his carseat to shush him incase he started up. “I will never be like that monster. I still wish I could hunt him down and make him pay.”
Realizing that he had just temporarily lost his composure, he apologized. “I-I-m sorry. I’m such and idiot! You just gave me your blessing and I practically but your head off. Eli felt tears welling in his eyes and looked down at the ground. Then he felt a hand on his shoulder.
“Eli.” Said Claude gently. “Look at me.” Eli quickly wiped the tears from his eyes and looked at Claude. “That's all the proof I need.”
Eli tilted his head. “What?”
“The way you just defended Cliona, saying that you would never be like him. It tells me you will never let anything happen to her.” He gave him a genuine smile.
“Yeah and I thought you were going to punch her brother over there.” Chuckled Ica. “I mean if you were willing to fight your girlfriend’s brother then you do deserve her.”
Eli laughed. “Well I wasn't going to hit Claude. But I am sorry. For getting worked up.”
Both of the Frollos smiled. “It's okay.” Said Claude. “I know my sister will be safe with you. And ha you love her more than anything.” Claude paused for a minute and hesitated like he wanted to say something but didn't know is he should. “So I know you two are still dating but you guys…didn’t happen to…you know have-”
Claude didn't need to finish his sentence as Eli knew what he was getting at. His eyes widened and he felt his face flush. “What! No! I mean I know I’m not one of you Jehovah’s Witness but my parents did teach me some morals.” He chuckled. “So no we haven’t done that yet. As a matter of fact that’s one of the reasons me and my ex-girlfriends broke up. I wasn't ready but apparently she was because she cheated with the quarterback.”
“Okay. That's good to know.” Said Claude half to himself.
Just then, then the waitress came back with their breakfast and they ate happily and chatted about the wedding and how Cliona would definitely say yes. When the check came, Eli paid as promised and they left the restaurant.
“So.” Began Ica as they walked back to their cars. “Did you get a ring?”
Eli shook his head. “Not yet…I saved up for it but I haven’t actually gone out and picked one out yet. I mean, I didn't want to buy it and then you guys not give me your blessing. I wanted to make sure it was okay first. And I don't know the first thing about picking out rings.”
“Oh…well you’ll find the perfect ring. You know Cliona and knows what she will love. When you see that ring you’ll know, no questions ask.”
Eli nodded contemplating what Ica was telling him. “I guess. Claude, how did you know Ica’s ring was the one?”
“Well you see-” Began Claude. But his wife cut him off.
“Claudie bears got my ring from a gumball machine.” Ica held out her hand to let Eli see the holographic yellow and magenta snake with rhinestone eyes that wrapped around her ring finger. “Well my mum one and two helped out a little bit.”
Eli just looked at Ica then Claude. Not believing what he was hearing. “I’m not getting her a flimsy gumball machine ring. Claude, you seriously got your wife a cheap ring like that?”
Claude, feeling put in the spot didn't know what to say. “Eli stop it! I love my ring. And it's what I wanted. It's not about the ring, it’s about the person who gives you the ring.” Ica gently put Zephyr’s carrier down and wrapped her arms around her husband. “I love this man with all my heart, and nothing will ever change that.”
Claude smiled and hugged his wife back and kissed the top if her head. “Same goes for me Mon amour.”
Eli watched them, guilty that he had been so judgemental. “I’m sorry guys. Ica do you think you can help me pick one out?”
Ica looked to Claude and he nodded. “Of course, we’ll both help.”
“Awesome. Okay I need to get going because now I have to tell my parents and sister the news. See you later.” With that Eli was off, a bug grin on his face. This really happening. Please please let her say yes.
On they way home, Eli dialled up his parents. It rang three times and then her heard the voice if his mother Charlotte.
”Well hello Elias.” Charlotte always insisted using her son’s full name. “What a nice surprise getting a call from my one and only son.” She said sunnily.
“Hey mom, is dad around? I have some news and I wan you both to hear it at the same time…actually you know what I might need to do a three way call. Amelia needs to hear this too.”
Charlotte raised her tin eyebrows. “Oh? Well this must be some really big news seeing as you need all three of us together. But no need to call your sister, she is here already. She decided to pay her ole folks a visit.”
”Perfect.” Said Eli relieved that he wouldn’t have to go through the hassle of adding his sister to a three way call.
He heard his mother call for his father and sister. “Oswald, get Amelia, Elias is on the phone. He says he has some news that he needs to tell all of us. Not long he heard the foot steps of his father and sister as they entered the kitchen. “Hey son.” Said Oswald. “What’s cooking? You’re mother says you have some news to tell us.”
Eli nodded on the other end of the phone, his heart fluttering knowing that he was about to yell his family about a life changing decision. “I do. So…wait…Amelia’s there right?”
“Yes Eli, mom will sign everything you are saying.” Assured Oswald. “Go ahead. We’re listening.
Eli gave a nod and continued. “So…as you know, me and Cliona have been dating for sometime and…well she is the love of my life and I don’t want to just be my girlfriend anymore.” Eli’s heart skipped. “I want her to be my wife. I’m going to ask her to marry me.”
Not even a second after Eli had finished his sentence he heard his mother’s shrill cry of elation. “My baby’s getting married! My baby’s getting married!”
Eli laughed out loud. “Well I hope. She has to say yes first.”
Oswald watched his daughter sign something that she wanted to say to Eli. “Amelia says of course she’ll say yes! And I agree with her. Cliona is crazy about you. Oh I remember when she sent me that text with your phone.” His father chuckled to himself. “I could tell you were smitten with her then.”
Eli smiled to himself, thinking back to the moment when Cliona had stolen his phone to thank his father for making all of them take dance lessons.
He heard his mother chuckle. “I didn’t expect my daughter in law to be older than me by twelve years but Elias she is a lovely girl…woman. Older woman?” Said Charlotte, fumbling over what term to use.
“Mom it’s okay I know what you meant.” Once again, Amelia began singing. “Oh Amelia says she always wanted an older sister.”
The four of them laughed. “But really son, we couldn’t be happier for you. And we know she will say yes.” Said Oswald.
Eli was quiet for a moment thinking how luck he as to have such a loving family. “Hey, guys. Thank you for being so supportive of me. Not just by accepting my unconventional relationship with Cliona, but for everything. My hopes and dreams. I couldn’t have asked for a better family.”
He heard sniffling and automatically knew that his mother was tearing up. “We love you too Elias.” Charlotte wiped her eyes and sniffed composing herself. “When do you plan to propose?”
”The day after tomorrow. I…still have to get the ring. I had to make sure it was okay with her brother an sister-in-law. They gave me their blessing so now I have to go ring snooping which I have to do tomorrow. They are coming to help me.”
There was a brief silence as Amelia signed. “Your sister says not to be cheap and you’d better get something beautiful.” Translated Charlotte.
Eli chuckled. “Don’t worry. I won’t. She’s my Queen and deserves the most precious ring out there. Ica told me that you’ll know when you’ve found the right one. I mean her ring is…let’s just say different.”
”How different?” Asked Charlotte.
”Her ring is from a gumball machine.” There was a long pause. “But she loves it. Ica is…well eccentric. She also had a black wedding dress and a dog as her flower girl…” He trailed off realising just how eccentric his girlfriend’s brother’s wife really was. “But anyway, she also told me it’s not the ring but the person that gives you the ring that’s most important. Bedsides Claude was ready to go spend big bucks but her mother told her how she would always be happy with a gumball machine ring. But I’m not getting my Cliona something that is just as beautiful as her. Well nothing is as beautiful as she is but a close second. Anyway guys I’m home. I’ll talk to you later. I can’t wait to start looking at rings!”
Charlotte laughed. “Okay baby. We will talk to you later and make sure you keep us posted.”
“I will. Bye Mom, bye Dad. Tell Amelia I said bye. Love you.”
“We love you too.” The three of them said.
Eli parked the car and quickly ran into the house. He plopped down on his bed phone in hand and immediately began searching for rings for his beloved, hopefully soon to be wife.
***
It was about three o’clock and Cliona had just finished up some errands. She hadn’t heard from Eli all day and was wondering if everything was alright with him. She sent him a quick text.
Cliona: Hello my brave knight. I haven’t heard from you today. I hope everything’s all right. 😘
She set her phone back in her purse, and entered her cottage. Lucifer came padding up to her, his yellow and green eyes bright. “Hi Lucifer. I haven’t heard from our Eli, I’m sure he’s just busy.” Cliona spent the rest of the day inside as it began to rain. By this point, it began getting late and the sun was beginning to set. Cliona still hadn't heard from Eli and she was beginning to become worried. She decided to call her brother to see if he's heard from him. Lucifer plopped down beside him human mum as she dialed up her brother. It rang four times and he finally picked up.
“Bonjur sis.” He said smiling on the end of the phone. Zephyr was propped on the bed next to him, with Roary curled up at the foot of it.
“Claude, have you heard from Eli? I haven’t heard from him all day. He usually is constantly texting me. Mostly little silly sayings or little hearts…or I love you’s every hour….” She trailed off smiling to herself at how much Eli cared about her. But now she hadn't gotten a single text from him. “But today he was quiet. Do you know if everything is okay?” Claude hesitated. Yes he had heard from Eli, not only that but had breakfast with him and gave him his blessing to marry his sister. “Claude?”
“Uh…well…” Just then Ica came bounding in with a big bowl of popcorn ready to begin their movie.
“Who’s that?” Asked Ica, looking over at the phone.
“It’s Cliona.” Said Claude giving his wife a warning look. He covered the speaker with his hand. “Do not let on or say anything about Eli’s proposal plans.
Ica wrinkled her nose at him. “As if I would ruin that. Wily old man.”
“He’s asking if we have heard from Eli. Apparently she hasn't heard from him all day. And you know that isn't like him. He must have been so wrapped up in his idea of proposing to Cliona he must have forgotten to text her.”
“Claude are you still there?” Asked his sister.
“Yeah…Ica just came into the room.”
“Hi Cliona!” Said Ica. Trying to sound as if she wasn’t keeping a big secret that could change Cliona’s life forever.
“I was asking if you guys spoke to my boyfriend.” She repeated.
“Oh Eli, well you know. He’s probably busy and all so maybe didn't get a chance to talk to you.” Ica shrugged helplessly at Claude.
“But that never stopped him before.” Said Cliona. “Do you think he’s…avoiding me? What if he is starting to not like me. Maybe he wants to break up.”
Ica vehemently shook her head even though Cliona couldn't see her. “Cliona, no! No. He is not breaking up with you and I know that for a fact.”
“But-”
“Ica’s right. No way is he breaking up with you. Just er…text him again…or something. But sis, me and Ica here were going to watch a movie. So we’ll talk later okay? Love you.” Claude quickly hung up and he and Ica let out a breath. “Okay well that was nerve racking. Let me call that man.” Claude dialed his twin’s boyfriend’s number. It rang and rang. “Ugh where is he?” Huffed Claude. Finally he picked up.
“Hello?” He asked sleepily.
“Yeah sooo my sister just called us. She was asking if we heard from you because apparently you haen’t texted her at all today.” Said Claude somewhat annoyed.
“Yeah…she legit was wondering if you were thinking of breaking up with her.” Chimed Ica.
Any traces of sleepiness evaporated from Eli replaced by temperoary panic and he tugged on his dread locks. Ughh I’m such an idiot! How could I forget- I guess I was so wrapped up with telling you guys and my parents…I was looking at rings for like two hours and I guess I fell asleep. I didn't get any rest last night. What did you guys tell her?”
“We kind of avoided the question of ‘if we heard from you.”’ Said Claude.
“But…why? You could have told her yes.” Retorted Eli.
Ica rolled her hazel eyes. “Yeah but if she knew we spoke to you and had breakfast with you on top of that she would ask why and we can’t very well tell her what we were talking about. Plus she might feel bad that her boyfriend could talk to her brother and hid wife, but didn't have time to text his own girlfriend. Just call her.”
Eli nodded. “Okay, yeah I’ll just call her. Nothing to be nervous about.” He said his voice becoming higher. “Alright I will see you guys tomorrow for the ring. Right?”
“Right now call my sister before she freaks out even more than she is.” Pressed Claude.
“Okay bye.” Eli ckicked off with Claude and took a deep breath. Then he failed up hiss girlfriend. I rang once and she picked up immediately.
“Where have you been! I’ve been so worried. Did you get my text. Are you okay?” Cliona’s words tumbled out like a water spout.
“I’m so so sorry. I got caught up in a bunch of business and I got like no sleep last night. I fell asleep. But please know, I love you more than anything my Queen. Nothing or no one will ever change that.”
Cliona smiled. “I know. I love you too. I don't mean to get so hysterical it’s just…you make me so happy I don’t want to lose you. Eli felt his heart swelling with love for her. “You’re not working tomorrow right? Want to do something together?” She asked hopeful. As soon as Eli’s heart has swelled, it deflated a little.
”I…can’t.” He said feeling awful.
”Oh…” Eli winced, hearing the disappointment in her voice.
”It’s just that….I have some really important business to attend to.” He confessed, thinking of the ring he would be picking out for her.
“Oh, for work?” She asked.
Eli winced again. He couldn’t lie to her, but he couldn’t tell her the truth either. “Er…not exactly.” There was silence for a few moments. “Er, but! The day after tomorrow, let’s do something special together.”
Cliona gave a small smile. “Okay Eli. Well, it’s late, I’m going to try to get some rest. Maybe I’ll see what my brother is doing tomorrow or maybe Ica.”
Eli jolted. “No!” Cliona raised her eyebrows and jerked back a little from the phone. Taken aback at Eli’s tone. “I mean no as in I think the two of them have plans tomorrow. With me.” He thought inwardly.
“I see. Okay, I’ll figure something out to occupy myself tomorrow. Maybe I’ll ask Lois,
if she wants to have a girl’s day. She’s been very kind to me since I’ve moved here we’ve done a couple of things together after Claude and Ica introduced me. Anyway, goodnight Eli. I love you.”
”Goodnight my Queen. I love you more.” With that he hung up with her and put his face in his cupped palms then ran a hand through his locks. I hope she doesn’t hate.
The next morning, Eli once again hadn’t gotten any sleep. His mind was occupied with rings and the fact that he had basically ignored Cliona yesterday then brushed her off when she has asked to spend time with him. He looked at the clock. 5:00. He took his phone off the charger and texted Cliona, trying to make up for yesterday.
Eli: Good morning my Queen, I hope you slept well. You might still be sleeping, but know that even we aren’t going to see each other today, I will be thinking of you all day. I love you very much.
He set his phone back down on the nightstand and sat up. Forgetting about trying to go back to sleep, he got up and showered then looked at more jewellery stores. As he scrolled a certain store caught his eye. The Queen’s Jewels. Immediately he clicked and browsed through the site. They didn’t have any rings featured or any jewellery at all for that matter. But the ratings were pretty good. Not only that but he had a good feeling about this store. By this time it was 8:30 and the website said that the jewellery store opened at ten. Eli was eager to get there so he texted Claude.
Eli: I want to get there right when it opens. Are you guys up and ready? We have an hour.
Immediately Claude’s text came through.
Claude: Yes we are up and getting ready. We will see you soon.
Eli: Great!
Eli then scrolled through the rest of his text messages. There was one from his mum, dad, and sister, as well as one from his best friend but the text he really was waiting for was one from his girlfriend. But the only thing he saw when he opened up her text conversation was his last text he had sent her this morning. I hope she isn’t mad at me. He thought to himself.
It was about 9:45 when the Frollos arrived to pick up Eli. As soon as he saw Claude’s black mustang pull in the driveway he zipped out the door. He quickly opened the back door and slid in. Zephyr was in his car seat. When he saw Eli a smile graced his freckled face. Eli smiled and poked Zephyr’s belly. “Hey there little guy. If I’m lucky, I’ll be your uncle…that’s if your auntie says yes.” Zephyr squealed happily making his bright green light up. Zephyr’s parents watched Eli quietly, amused as he interacted with their son. Eli smiled and gently took the baby’s tiny soft hand in his own. “Your auntie gave you such pretty eyes. I love them.” Mused Eli as he thought of how they sparkled when ever she looked at him. Then his expression turned a bit sorrowful, thinking of how Cliona still hand’s said anything to him this morning. It was absolutely torture. Is this how she felt yesterday?
“Eli? Are you okay?” Asked Ica noticing his slight change in mood.
“Yeah…I mean I don’t know. I think Cliona might be mad at me.”
Claude glanced at him in the rear view mirror. “Why do you say that?”
”Well for one, I basically ignored her all day yesterday. Then when I finally did talk to her, she asked me if we could do something together and I told her no and that I had plans. Which obviously is getting the ring today. Then she was going to ask you two. To do something today and I had to tell her that you had plans. Well not with me but just…plans. I think I hurt her feelings.” Admitted Eli. “She hasn’t spoken to me all morning. Even after I texted her.”
Ica quirked her mouth. “Well…maybe she just hasn’t seen the text yet. Or is still sleeping.”
Eli looked doubtful. “Maybe.”
”Just think when you propose, she’ll understand why you were being all mysterious.” Said Ica.
“Well I ju-“ Eli stopped mid sentence as they pulled into the parking lot of the jewellery store. “We’re here!”
”Yup.” Said Claude. “Not exactly here at the time you wanted to be, but I mean it’s only ten after.”
”It’s fine.” Eli said quickly. “No one is in there yet which is good. Means we don’t have to wait.”
Eli began to get out but then halted. “Do you want me to get Zephyr?”
Claude shook his head. “No I got him. Go ahead inside, we’ll be there in a sec.”
Eli nodded and hustled inside, making the little bell ring as he opened the door. “There was a thin woman dressed in black trousers and white blouse busying herself with some necklaces. She looked over her shoulder and smiled. “Hi, welcome to The Queen’s Jewels. My names is Shilla, how can I help you today?”
”Um…yes hi. I need to find the perfect ring for my girlfriend.”
“Well of course. I’d be happy to help you.” She said cheerily. Eli heard the jingle of the bell and turned to see The Frollos coming in. Zephyr was secured in Claude’s arms. “I’ll be with you guys shortly.” Said Shilla, flashing them a friendly expression.
”Oh that’s okay. We’re with him.” Ica pointed at Eli. “Moral support.”
“Oh nice. Well, let’s get started shall we. “What do you have in mind? What cut diamond? How many carats? Brand Oh and of course, price range.” Eli stood there with a bemused expression on his face. “Don’t worry, guys are usually clueless when it comes to this stuff. No offence. How about we call in that moral support over there.” Said Shilla looking in Ica’s direction. Miss?” Ica turned her attention away from some chokers she was examining and looked in their direction. I think your friend here could use a woman’s touch.”
Ica glanced at her husband. He gave her a teasing smile knowing that she hadn’t the slightest clue when it came to real jewellery. Nonetheless Ica headed over to where they were standing. “Sooo…” began Ica. What did you need me to help with it?”
”What do you think would be right for your friend’s girlfriend? I assume you know her?” Asked Shilla.
“I do. Um…” Ica’s throat suddenly went dry.
Shilla’s dark eyes drifted to the snake ring on Ica’s finger. “Are you married? I mean there is a ring in your ring finger and a band but I’m not sure if that’s just...”
Ica nodded as she trailed off. “Yes I’m married.”
”Oh lovely. What kind if ring is that?”
Eli stifled a laugh, knowing how people reacted to Ica’s unconventional wedding ring. “My ring is from a gumball machine.” Shilla just blinked at Ica.
“Oh…okay then. And you are okay with that?”
Hearing the conversation, Claude came striding over and kissed his wife’s brow. Shilla’s eyebrows rose in surprise not quite comprehending what she was seeing. Ica smiled up at Claude. “Yeah, it’s what I wanted.” She said simply.
Changing the subject from rings, Shilla smiled at Zephyr. “What a cutie pie. What’s his name?”
“This is our son Zephyr.” Said Claude nuzzling his cheek.
Shilla’s eyes widened and she tried her best not to gape, but took a couple of surprised steps back. Eli wanted to burst out laughing but he turned his head away and covered his mouth. “W-well then. He is very cute like I said. And has beautiful green eyes.” She managed to choke out.
“He gets his eyes from my girlfriend.” Chimed Eli after he pulled himself together. “Here I’ll show you. He whipped out his phone and scrolled through his camera roll, pulling up one of his many pictures of Cliona. He held the phone out in front of Shilla, she smiled as Eli showed her the picture then her smile faltered when she saw it up close
“This is your girlfriend?” Asked Shilla once again blindsided.
“Yes. He’s actually his twin sister.” He motioned to Claude. “And I love her very much. And that’s why I need to find the perfect ring. It has to be almost as beautiful as she is. I saw almost because nothing is more beautiful than my Queen.”
Shilla glanced at Cliona’s photo again. She did have to admit, that for an older woman, Cliona was stunningly beautiful. And she did in fact have the same bright green eyes as the unique couple’s baby whom she had just met . The jewellery clerk’s face softened into acceptance. “Well, I can tell you do love her very much. Now, let’s find you that ring.”
After giving Eli a bit of wedding ring 101 she left him to browse the cases. She turned her attention back to the Frollos, watching them entertain their baby boy. After about fifteen minutes they heard Eli shout. “I found it!” The Frollos and Shilla turned to see him with his hand splayed on the glass and his nose so close to the case that any further and the tip of his nose would be touching the surface.
He looked up when they approached him. “I found her ring. I know I found the one.” He said Remembering what his mother had told him about knowing when the ring was the perfect. His pale brown gaze was drilling into a gorgeous shimmering ring. The band was 18k rose gold with glittering French cut diamond that sat between four rose gold roses, matching the band. Two on each side. “It’s perfect.” He whispered.
“That is indeed a beautiful ring. But not as beautiful as her.” Shilla winked at him. “Now, let’s box it up for you.” As Eli checked out and paid for the ring, he couldn’t help but keep the enormous grin off his face, even if it had cost him a good part of his life’s savings. Shilla handed him a tiny bag with the ring inside. “Here you are. Now don’t lose it. I’m can’t tell you how many people come in here then lose the rings before they even get to propose. Eli’s grip tightened on the rope handles of the tiny bag as if the jelwery clerks’s words would come true. “Alright, well you all had a nice day. I have more customers waiting. Good luck with the proposal.” Shilla waved them off and smiled as she began to help the next person browsing the cases.
After getting in the car, Eli couldn’t help but take the ring out of the bag and flip open the box. He admire it’s beauty, imagining the look on Cliona’s face when she saw it, him slipping it on her slender finger, then picking her up and twirling her around, happy that she had said yes. “Oh! I have to show my parents a picture of the ring.” Eli snapped a picture of the ring at every angle and sent it to his family in a group text. Immediately he got a response.
Mom: Oh Elias it’s beautiful!
Dad: She’ll love it!
Amelia: You did good big bro. It’s perfect for her. She’s worth spending your life savings on. 😜
Eli smiled afs he replied to is mother, father, and little sister.
Then he sent Ezra the picture of the ring.
Eli: Got the ring.
Ezra: Dude! That is a serious rock! How much did that cost?!
Eli: LOL You don't even want to know. But it doesn't matter. My Queen deserves the best.
Ezra: Well with that thing, she’s gotta say yes.
Eli: Oh I hope so.
After Eli finished texting his best friend, he noticed he had a text message that he hadn't read. Hy went back to his text conversations and realized that it was from Cliona whimhad texted him about an hour and a half ago. With all the excitement in the jewelry store he must’t have herd it go off. His heart skipped as he tapped to read.
My Queen: Hello my brave Knight. I’m sorry it took me so long to respond. It seems like Lucifer would be funny to cart of my phone. I tell you sometimes he’s like a dog. I found it tucked in his bed just now. It’s nice to know you are thinking of me. Lois and I had a nice time together. Okay, I love you.
“Guys Cliona texted me. Lucifer stole her phone.” He laughed and so did Claude and Ica. He quickly texted her back.
Eli: That's okay my Queen. Maybe Lucifer is trying to tell you he needs some better toys. LOL
I have just finished what I had to do today. Let’s spend the whole day together tomorrow. I can't wait to see you. 💕
She resounded immediately.
My Queen: I would love nothing more.

For the third night in a row Eli hadn't gotten any sleep. But he was wide awake, full of adrenaline. He would be proposing to the woman he was madly in love with. He had butterflies mixed in with a tad bit of anxiety. Nonetheless, he was excited. He would be taking her to the park where Eli had driven her to the classical concert, where they had danced, where they had shared their first kiss. He quickly got dressed then called Claude.
“Hello?”
“Today’s the day!” Yipped Eli, unable to contain his excitment.
Claude chuchked. “Yes I know. We’ll meet you at the there at 10:00. But we’ll go off and do our own thing. That way you get your alone time. We’ll just pop back up when it’s time for you to get down on one knee.”
“Hey, by the way you never told us how you were going to propose.” Chimed Ica.
Eli couldn't help but laugh. “I’m going to propose on the carousel.” He said simply.
“The carousel you two snuck in to that night?” Asked Claude raising a slanted eyebrow.
Eli laughed again. “Yup. I will speak to the ride operator when I get there. We will ride it, then when itnstopes and everyone gets off, I will have an announcement made and then I pop the question. So you guys have to ride too because you need to FaceTime my parents and sister so they can see. I know you’ll have Zephyr by you can sit in that sleigh seat of whatever it was.”
Ica looked at Claude. Her eyes said it all and he huffed a laugh. “Okay crazy girl. You can ride a horse. I’ll sit in the slaeigh with Zephyr.” She grinned and kissed his cheek.
“Well that works too. But a yeah that’s the plan. No I have to go and pick Cliona up. Bye thanks guys, you’re the best.” With that Eli clicked off and texted his girlfriend that he was his way. She responded stating she was ready, unbeknownst that her boyfriend would be asking her one of the biggest questions of his life.

When they arrived at the park Cliona looked around as got out of the car and smirked at her boyfriend. “I see what you did.”
Eli pretend to be clueless. “Why? I don't know what your talk about.”
“Oh really? Taking us back to the place where it all started.
“Where what started.” Eli couldn't help but look smug.
“Wher our budding romance stated. Do I need to remind you?” Asked Cliona lowering her voice giving him a coquettish smile.
Eli quirked his mouth. “Maybe.”
Cliona moved closer to Eli and took his hand in hers then leaned in and kissed him. Eli smiled through the kiss as he pulled her closer. “I think I remember now.” He murmured against her mouth. People walked by either stared, shook their heads in dissaproval, or awed. Then they heard a familiar voice.
“Get a room.” But it was tiinted with playfulness. Breaking apart they turned I see Ica giving them a teasing smile.
“Well hello to you too. Sister-in-law.” Said Cliona going up to hug her. While she hugged Ica then went to go coo over her nephew, Claude gave a flick of gray eyes toward the carousel. Eli gave a single nod knowing that if he was going to talk to the ride operator he would have to do it now.
As his girlfriend was bent over Zephyr’s stroller, he placed a hand on his back. I’ll be back my Queen I need to go take care of something really quickly at the booth over there. Be back in a flash. Thankful that she didn't ask any questions, Eli skittered over to the booth. When he got there he stopped in his tracks. There in front of him was the guard that had chased after him and Cliona after they had snuck in to the carousel. However, rather than feeling nervous that the guard may still have ill feelings toward him, he felt quite amused.
“Excuse me sir?” Said Eli.
The ride attendant guard looked up. He quirked his mouth to one side then squinted. “Hey, don’t I know you from somewhere? He leaned closer to Eli’s face causing him to lean back so their noses wouldn't touch. Then the man jolted up as a light bulb went off in his head. “I do! You’re the punk that snuck on my carousel with that older woman!”
Eli leaned on elbow on the booth trying to act smooth, as he gave the operator a wry smile. “You are correct. And that older woman you saw me with is right over there. He pointed to swear Cliona, Claude, Ica were standing. After we ran off and hid we laughed because you couldn’t catch us.”
Feeling mocked, the man pulled up his belt and huffed, but before he could retort, Eli continued. “And there beind that wall we hid behind, I kissed her.”
The opporator’s eyes widened, his annoyance with temporarily forgotten. “Wait…you kisssed her? But…but…you…she.” He crossed his arms and pointing in different directions, trying to fathom the thought of a much younger guy smooching with a munch older woman.
Ignoring his bewildered babbling, he grinned. “She’s my girlfriend now, and I plan on proposing to her. Today. On that carousel.” He pointed to the array of colorful horses behind him. Then Eli’s expression turned serious, almost apologetic. “I know what we did wasn’t really right, but…would it be alright if I use the carousel to propose to her after. All I would need you to do introduce us and I’ll take care of the rest. I’ll pay tripple.” That wry smile appeared on Eli’s face again. “I think I owe you seeing as we didn’t buy tickets last time.” Eli looked at the man in front of him. His pale brown eyes pleading.
The man held his gaze but then his expression softened and he let out a sigh. “Okay. You’re lucky I’m in a good mood today. And…if it’s for love then I guess I can go along with your little plan.”
Eli grinned. “Thank you!” He immediately took out a wad of cash and thrust it toward the operator. His eyebrows rose at the amount. I just need four tickets…wait does my nephew…” Eli trailed off. He had just referred to Zephyr as his nephew, yet, technically he wasn’t. Not until Cliona said yes that is. But it already felt so natural to him, like he was part of the family. It was us Cliona was already his wife. “Er I mean does my girlfriend’s nephew need a ticket. He’s only 9 months. His father will be sitting with him on the sleigh.” Eli motioned to Claude a he bounced Zephyr in the air.
The operator blinked a couple of times ”That’s his father?” He said in disbelief.
“Yup. That my girlfriend’s brother.” Said Eli.
The man just shrugged and shook his head as if he didn’t know what to think anymore. “No the baby doesn’t need a ticket. So I’ll just give you four.”
He cut the tickets and then Eli noticed he began counting out change. “Keep it all.” He said quickly. “I’m just happy you agreed to let me do this.”
The man stood there astonished. “You sure? This is a lot of money for only four measly tickets.”
Eli gave him a genuine smile. “I’m sure. Thank you…” Eli searched his uniform until he spotted his name tag. “Bill. Thank you Bill.” Bill nodded and handed the ticketed to Eli who took off back to his hopefully soon to be fincé.
When he reached Cliona she smiled at his return. “Everything okay?”
Eli nodded feeling giddy. He kissed her quickly but tenderly. “Everything’s perfect.” He gave the Frollos a knowing smile.
“Well,” began Ica. “Claude and I, plus the peanut, are ditching, so you two kids can have your alone time. We’ll catch up with you later. Come on Claude.” Ica grabbed her husband hand and the stroller and hauled him toward the playground.
The couple looked at each other and laughed. “Those two.” Said Cliona smiling after them. “I love my family.
Eli took her hand. I love them too. She looked at him, an affectionate smile gracing her pretty features. “Now come on my queen. Let’s go have some fun. I owe you seeing that I have been MIA for like two days. “I might have to make up for it in kisses too. Maybe we can find a tree or something to go behind.” He threw her as sly smile and she just shook her head and smacked him playfully on the chest. But she wasn’t completely opposed to the idea if she were being honest with herself. “Actually, nah. There’s plenty of time for kissing later. Let’s start over here on those swan boats.” He took his girlfriend by the hand to begin their adventurous time together.
As the day wore on, it was almost time for Eli’s big moment. The sun was just beginning to set. Eli and Cliona were sitting on a blanket people watching with their fingers laced together. The various individuals enjoying themselves on this beautiful day.
“Eli mon amour.” Said Colina, untangling her fingers from his. “I’m going to run to the bathroom. I’ll be right back.”
He nodded then kissed her cheek. When she got up, he realized this was the perfect time to start putting his plan into motion. He shot a text to the Frollos and his family as well as his best friend Ezra, letting them no that they would he heading to the carousel in ten minutes. Everyone responded that they understood. All of a sudden Eli’s heart began to speed up and his stomach filled with butterflies again. You can do this Eli. He reassured himself.
He felt a slender hand on his back and had to keep himself from jumping. He swilved his head back and smileing anxiously at his girlfriend. “I’m back. Did you miss me?” She grinned. Eli tried his best to swallow his nerves but they lodged in his throat. Cliona’s thin brow creased and she tilted her head. “Are you alright?”
Eli forced himself to calm down. “Yeah, I’m good. As a matter of fact.” Eli discreetly pulled the tickets from his back pocket and held the tickets behind his back. “Close your eyes.” Cliona raised an arched suspicious eyebrow, but did as he said and closed her eyes. “Hold out your hands.” He said. She held out her hands and Eli placed a single red ticket with an imprint of a carousel horse on it, in her palms. “Now, open your eyes.”
Cliona opened her eyes and dropped her gaze to what was resting in her hands. “What’s this?”
She said half to herself. “A carousel ticket?” Her gaze flicked from he ticket to Eli’s smug playful face.
“I thought it would be better if we actually paid for our ride this time.”
Cliona laughed out loud. “Oh my brave knight, you are really something. Was that what you were doing earlier?”
Eli smirked. “Mmm you could say that. Come on, let’s hurry and get in line.” He took her by the hand and led the way.
When they arrived at the carousel, the Frollos were already there waiting for them. “I see that you three are here for a ride too. You sure you don’t want to sneak on?” She teased.
Ica opened her mouth but Claude already knew what she was going to say. “This one would.” He said pointing at her with his thumb. Besides, we already had our share of that sneaking out of a hotel.”
Eli and Cliona just blinked at them. “Um why were you sneaking out of a hotel?” Asked Eli, cocking his head.
”So Maribel wouldn’t see us.” Said Ica.
They waited for her to explain further and when she didn’t Eli rolled his pale brown eyes. ”And who’s Maribel.”
“ She was the nice hotel clerk from the hotel we stayed at on our honeymoon in Ireland . She was really nice to us, and she didn’t care about our age gap and she was really sweet and funny and sassy, and we wanted to give her a gift before we left for being so kind, but we had to sneak out of the hotel so she wouldn’t see us and ask us where we were going because she always asked where we were going when we left the hotel.” Icas words spilled out like potatoes falling out of an open bag.”
Claude shrugged. “Yup. What she said.”
Eli gave a slow nod. “Right then. Anyway! Let’s go get in line. Eli took his girlfriend’s hand and led her to the line, the Frollos following behind. The ride operator let the last of the riders on before closing the gate. “Looks like we have to wait for this one then we’re next.” As Cliona looked around Eli gave Ica and Claude the signal to get ready to start FaceTiming in his family and best friend.
“Eli!” Yipped Cliona tugging on his sleeve. “Isn’t that the same guy from last time? You know, when we snuck on?”
Already knowing that it was Eli nodded. “It is.” He said nonchalantly.
“Do…you think he’ll let us on?” She asked surprised by Eli’s easy going attitude.
”Oh he will, don’t worry. He wrapped his arms around her, rubbing her arms in case she began getting a chill. Bu now the sun had completely gone down, making he lights of the carousel blare magnificent shades of blues, reds, and orangey yellows. She leaned into him content being in his embrace.
When she looked over at Claude and Ica she noticed them with their faces in Claude’s phone, their brows furrowed in concentration . “No that’s the wrong button.” Whispered Ica.
”Are you sure? Wait Ezra…no that’s his mom right?” Ica rolled her eyes and hugged as she turned the phone toward her.
“What are you guys bickering about?” Asked Cliona.
The Frollo couple whipped their heads up grinning nervously. “Uh…nothing!” Said Claude quickly. “Just trying to figure out how to work this…app.” Eli threw Claude a concerned look. He mouthed that everything was fine and not to worry. Eli smiled until he heard his mother’s voice.
“Are they on the ride yet?” Eli tensed and threw another annoyed glance in their direction. Ica snatched the phone from her husbands hand fumbling with it until she muted Charlotte.
“Who was that?” Asked Cliona.
“Oh that was just a video.” Said Ica quickly with a wave of her hand. “Just started playing. Happens sometimes.” She glared at Claude and shrugged apologetically.
“Okay! Everyone wait for the ride to come to a complete stop before getting off your horse.” Bill unlocked the gate no let all the riders exit.
“Oh! It’s our turn.” Said Cliona excitedly. Eli’s heart dropped into his stomach and he thought he may faint. In a matter of 10 minutes he would be asking Cliona to marry him. The ride lasted about seven minutes including boarding time. And wishing those seven minutes he need to slow his heart rate and pull himself together. Bill opened the gate and began taking tickets. When it came time for him to take their tickets Bill gave him a knowing look. Eli smiled in return.
“Wow, it was like he didn’t even recognize us.” Said Cliona glancing back as Eli ushered her onto the ride. Once on the dock, Eli patted his pocket with the ring in it, as I’d making sure it was still there, He looked for the horse that he and Cliona were on last time. The one with white body and silvery mane with pink roses decorating the saddle. But he also had to make sure The Frollos were close by. Eli spotted them and gave a jerk off his head, signaling them to come to where he was all the while scanning the array of horses. Then his eyes fell on the one he was looking for. He grinned as he saw that it was still vacant.
”Come my Queen, your horse awaits.” Eli guided Cliona to the white horse. It seemed more majestic this time around. Maybe because they weren’t rushing or maybe it’s because this horse would have a roll in his proposal. Eli lifted Cliona onto the horse and then hoisted himself up behind her, just like he had last time.
Cliona chuckled and craned her neck to look back at him. “I’m having a bit of Deja Vu.”
Eli laughed. “Yeah I can see why.” He glanced back to see how the other three were doing. Ica was sitting on top of a speckled horse with a black and white mane, looking as childish as ever, and Claude was seated in the sleigh with Zephyr in his lap. They gave him a thumbs up. Claude discreetly flashed the phone in his direction and he saw his family and best friend waving and silently cheering. Cliona looked over her shoulder and Claude who quickly ducked the phone down.
