The myth of the three stones of creation is commonly described in Maya artifacts from this period, and refer to three domains of the universe: Chan (Sky), Kab-an (Earth) and Na(h)b / Ha' (Lake / River, “Water”).

"The Maya conceived divisions of time as burdens, which were carried through the never ceasing journey of time, by relays of bearers. Not the journey of one bearer and his load, but of many bearers, each with his own division of time on his back"

Itzam Cab Ain (equated to Cipactli in Nahua cosmology) the primordial waters crocodile lays the foundation of the Earth, from the water (in their tongue, there's the sign Ha' "water") - as the Paddler Gods (here taking a Iguana and a Bird deity on their boat) sail in the cosmic waters. The god of cold and obsidian stands holding the sign Kab'an "Earth" in the underworld. And the Yaax' Che, the world tree, is overseen by the principal bird deity (called Yax-Coc-Ah-Mut. Like Itzam Cab Ain, sometimes considered a form of Itzamna, a major deity from the Classic Era) whose flight represents the unfolding of time. The signs of Chan "Sky" and Ik' "wind" sit behind their claw.
