I have yet to figure out what plot purpose the death of Bill is meant to serve. It's as if Valve said, "Hey, we ended Episode II by killing one of the main characters.... Let's kill one here too!" And I think if he had been killed in that generator room, the three original survivors would have asked the four others to bring his body over to their building so that it could get some sort of burial. They're way too cheerful as well -- it's quite possible to play the entire level and never realize Bill is dead other than by the fact he isn't on that balcony.

They had to get rid of one character to fit the compaign and Bill isnt one of the more loved characters. Thats why they did it

I'm not sure why they had to do that to fit the campaign, though. It never goes to a seven-person game (and if it did, why not eight?). Four people on that balcony would have been much the same as three.

Of course, they could have dumped Bill for other reasons. Someone said somewhere that his voice actor was no longer available (the same reason there will be no big Dr. Breen part in Ep. III -- the guy who did the voice is dead). They might even want a space so that they can gender-balance one of the teams. It's always struck me as curious that they remembered to make two of the team Black when the action shifted south, to reflect the locality, but didn't make half the team female, to reflect... well, just about every locality outside of a federal prison!

In any case, Valve isn't exactly famous for thinking ahead when it comes to story lines. They tend to rely on sudden inspirations and make many last-minute changes. You can find many examples discussed in the text of the HL2 concept art book Raising the Bar (if you can find a copy, that is -- it's never been reprinted and the only reason I've read it is that a local library happens to have one). Likewise, some of the teaser trailers for Episode II were quite divergent from what shipped. I think that's what's delaying Episode III.... they've tied the story into so many knots now that it's going to take quite some doing to bring it to coherent closure.

I half-suspect that they had this catchy name for the level, "The Passing" (oooh double meaning!) and the idea that someone should die, but then couldn't find a way to carry it through in story terms. Everyone I know expected the "lost" survivor to fall in some heroic defense or whatever.... I'm sure Valve was tempted, but that would be a very difficult thing to script so that it ended predictably but wasn't identical every time (if it were, it would be boring). So in the end, they just dumped Bill in the generator room and washed their hands of the whole thing.

He and Coach are rather past that sort of thing. Instead, they would sit around drinking beers and conducting conversations that begin with the phrase "Young people today...."

Which makes me wonder why Bill was eliminated. Who's going to grouse with Coach now?

dongzhongshu In reply to iTzApy [2010-04-29 03:48:28 +0000 UTC]

Well, he isn't a racist, anyway.... (not that he could be in a mass-market game).

I've been more than a bit displeased with the way they're developing Francis. He was a well-drawn character in the original four levels of L4D 1, but they've made him a total jerk in Crash Course and now The Passing, going for cheap laughs. They've dialed up some of the other characters too, seemingly for similar reasons -- some of Ellis' remarks about the car are too over the top, as when he jumps to the conclusion that it's been stolen and that they have to kill Francis.

Speaking of dialing up, in The Passing they also use so many Specials that they aren't very special any more. Two Tanks and a Charger on Easy setting, and it's not even the finale? Jockeys every thirty seconds? Zombie rushes that seem to take the entire population of the town and sic it on you? Hmph! Unimaginative. They haven't had to do that before -- oh, sure, there were some places where they turned it up to 11, such as with the witches in Hard Rain, or that nightmare cornfield at the end of L4D 1, but these were interesting challenges, something you could use your mind on as well as a machine gun, not continuous mindless blitzes. "Zombie-pouring" is a cheap way to make a map more difficult. Map design is supposed to do most of that.
