This is how Zake got his black scleras:

Billions of years ago, when Zake was fighting against Vordaax, the dark emperor slashed the thunder titan in the eyes. Zake was able to heal from his wounds but Vordaax's attack would affect his physical change forever. Unaware of the change, Zake kept fighting on, but was quickly defeated. Before the golden super soldier could be strucked down, his brothers and sisters saved him and the tyrant was forced to retreat.
They check on their massive brother and noticed the change almost immediately. They asked him why his scleras are black instead of white, but he angrily sotrmed off. After the battle, The kairdean soldiers did a checkup on Zake and explained that the change to his sys color is the result of Vordaax scaring him with his dark scythe.
He was able to make a full recovery, but refused to have the color of his eyes changed back to normal, as a reminder of his failures to destroy his evil brother for good.
