Description This is my original design scratchbuilt/kitbashed 24 inch dropship model I created from sheet plastic, ping-pong balls, scrap parts for detail, a clock cover, etc.

This model is built in 2 pieces that can separate. This shot shows the guns in detail.

Note that this isn't a kit I bought in the store and put together-I made this. If you'd like to read about the technique on how to scratchbuild/kitbash, I wrote a tutorial (part 1) that can be found here:

I love your recent series. I have always kitbashed cars before, I'll definately try this once I have my shop back together...

Loved the tutorial too. I've done similar things for cars, like electric razor screens for grille material and stuff. Never tried the aspirin bottle though! What do you use as a filler? I always melted empty sprue in the bottled model cement, but I've heard some good things about bondo and superglue... Just curious!

Thank you!
For filler, I usually use standard model putty (green stuff I think). I've used bondo for dioramas but not for filler.
Take care.

Do you ever buy your modelling stuff online, or do you have a shop nearby? The only one we had fell off the face of the earth about two years ago... (but not before I picked up a killer Monogram Lotus Esprit SE v8!!)

The closest thing now is in Tulsa....

I get most of my styrene (4 ft. x 8 ft. sheets) from a local plastics supplier. I get my strip, rod and small sheet styrene from HobbyTown here. And most of my casting materials and tools I get from micromark.com.

Have you dealt much with micromark? Great catalogs.

hmmm, no actually I think I have it book marked but I have never seen the catalog. I'll have to dig into that a little more.

4X8 sheets! Do you go through that much of it?

I never use a whole 4x8 sheet in one project, but I keep the excess around for the next project. I even used one sheet as a photography reflector and backdrop.

Cool. Thanks for all of the information! You've inspired me to get back into the habit! I'll probably stick to cars though. I should snap some of my old ones and post them. It's has kind of been side stepped to my latest hobby of refurbishing guitars and reselling. Amazing what kind of a paint job you can do to a guitar when you have N scale diorama experience!

I'll definately check out your tutorial

Thank you, and yes, it took months to complete.

All the armor plating on the hull are tiny rectangles that were cut by hand (using "The Chopper") and there are hundreds if not thousands of them.

Thanks for the comment.

I just took a look at your tutorial but you mention nothing about planning... is there any or do you just build as you go?

Hey-
I usually sketch out a quick drawing of the overall shape, refine that a bit (just the shape, no details), then just start building the understructure. The nurnies (bits of detail) happen as I build it.
