Bless you! It's a 3D technique called volumetric lighting. Gives a light a nice "foggy" feel I think.

You might want to think about adding some caustics to your textures, making them a little dirty to give your images a more realistic effect.

Also some bump mapping or displacement will help too. Just a thought. Very good work.

Thanks for the suggestions-I'm not really going for photorealism here, more of a game feel (I've studied game graphics for years and there's a certain look and feel I really get into that I'm sort of emulating here).

And I'm definitely a believer in dirtying things up, all my textures have bumps and dirt and grime, but I think the lighting diminishes that a lot. Perhaps I just need to go even further with it...
