I like this one! I love the contraptions and stuff that reminded me of the old cartoons. I missed those. Also, about the hammer, Pink Floyd Influence?

"Pink Floyd influence?"
No, but now that you mention it...

Actually just an instrument of destruction, pain, and the (symbolic) idea that the tools we use and make can come back to haunt us (a subset of the idea that the machine that we built now threatens us).
Thanks!

OMG!!! THAT'S EXACTLY LIKE THE 'ANIMATRIX'....Ever seen it?! It's exactly like what you said about how the machines we built are fighting back. It's REEAALLY REALLY GOOD!! I get the chills just by talking about it. By any chance, have you heard on the news that scientists revived a dog 3 hours later after he was pronounced medically dead? *shiversss..*

Reason I said Pink Floyd, cuz the hammer you used there looked very much like the one from The Wall.

Yes, I loved the Animatrix!

And I did see the revive the dog thingy-very Pet Cemetery-ish (Stephen King) if you ask me. We're living in a sci-fi world.

Yeah I thought you meant the wall when you mentioned the hammers and floyd. Great movie, at least I think so...
Thanks again!

Not only are we living in a scifi world...moreover...I think 'Dawn of the Dead' is upon us...in about 10 years or so, they're gonna do that to humans...I shudder to think what's gonna happen if it falls into the wrong hands...I hate to be eaten alive by Zombies.... If anything, I wish to be on an intoxicated state of being, tehrefore, I won't find it scary, nor painful... hehe...

Yes that would be very very cool, if you've heard of "destino" short film colaborated project between Dali and Disney, its a great 2d journey into animation within Dali's paintings. its great.

A very nice painting and concept. I really can't think of a whole lot to say that hasn't already been commented on. Though the contraption reminds me of those needlessly complex machines that pop up in older cartoons too (I know there is an actual name for these devices, but it escapes me at this time), perhaps symbolizing man's need to make things exceptionally complex? After all, it would seem sufficient to have the hammer, that alone could destroy the man, but instead there are levers, and springs, and pulleys, perhaps to entertain the man while he awaits the fate he has set for himself? Or perhaps to allow the man time to ponder the folley of his ways as doom falls? Or, and I get the feeling this isn't the intent, perhaps to allow the man some sliver of time to escape his fate once set in motion?

Ok, overthinking and ranting...

Thank you!
I think what you're thinking of is artist Rube Goldberg, who was renowned for painting and drawing these intricate machines. And yes, you hit the nail on the head, so to speak, in that the complexity of the machine is related to man's desire to make things complex.

Have you thought about doing sculpture or fantasy armor and stuff with your sheet metal skills? That's awesome!

Personally, I'd love to know how to weld. The fun I could have...

One of these days...

Arc welding is the easiest thing to do, you just point and press, you could pick it up in a day, no kidding........

Welding aluminium, bronze, copper or stainless-steel is a different matter...welding these takes years of practice...

I did actually design a few suits and made a few test pieces....a breastplate and thigh-guard, materials were expensive, and I could only do it in work.....with a garage in the future I would love to take it up again....perhaps try some ornamental head wear.....I'm currently in Loonyversity trying to seal a better future where my art wont be restrained by money.....

I did make a cool mountain bike frame out of aluminium, but quit my job and couldn't put on all the gears and brakes 'n' stuff...

You should post those test pieces. And I'd love to make some ornamental head wear as well. That would be so sweet...

SomeCrazyGuy In reply to ivanjs [2005-03-30 06:25:46 +0000 UTC]

*his, not him

I forgot to mention the reasoning:

The reason I believe the contraption symbolizes the danger God places upon mortals is in the simple fact that the person (Symbol of personal responibility, challenges) must use his own strength to prevent his own death by the contraption which God himself made... The irresponsibility then becomes quite evident in this because fo the sheer fact that the mortals must now bear such a strong responsibility themselves rather than having God help them out by removing this great pressure.

ivanjs In reply to SomeCrazyGuy [2005-03-30 11:57:31 +0000 UTC]

Dang, that's about as close as anyone has ever gotten.

You-re right-in the painting, God has put responsibility on mankind to take care of himself and his "toys"-nuclear weapons, genetics engineering, etc., the "you've made your bed, now you must sleep in it" kind of thing.

If the figure lets go of the rope, the machine is set in motion and the hammer smashes him to oblivion. In other words, if we "let go" of or ignore our responsibility to watch over the things we create, it will destroy us.

Thanks for sharing your spot-on interpretation!

Wow... I was close? Kick ass!

Anyways, that piece was incredibly inventive, well created, and I am glad I took the time to look at it! n_n

SomeCrazyGuy In reply to ivanjs [2005-03-30 06:22:02 +0000 UTC]

I am not too great with interpreting art, but I'll give it a try:

God seems to be quite irresponsible in his own responsibilities, and in the end, it is up to the mortals to fend for their own lives, rather than expecting God to help.

The contraption was a symbolization of the danger God places on him 'Children'.

The person smybolizes the challenges of survival and other life aspects.

...Was I close? I really hope I was, if not, sorry for misreading it. n_n'
