And if anyone's curious, this works in CS4 too. Also, moving the center point of the spotlight farther away from center seems to make a finer texture on the finished project. I'm going to have fun playing with this!

I've done it a simmilar way in the past. Only instead of using red for the texture channel I copy the everything to a new alpha channel and use that. I would also add noise if needed.

neat work
i may turn it into a vid
and add a little input
and give you credit

one small shortcut... once you have your selection
you can click ctrl+J to make a new layer
and copy of your selected area

another note is that you can really bump the
effect up with sharpening plus u can add
something interesting to it with a displace filter
on the blue channel after you've done the lighting
effect.
