Very cool concept you got there...only a very important detail....that was obviusly a reference from the AZTEC calendar depicting the Sun God in the center, there isnt really anything Mayan there, now, its a common mistake to think Mayans and Aztecs where the same, and they werent, actually there isnt anything Mayan there. Just technical criticism, I like the image ;o) but I recommend you to do some research first...Mayan art is waaaay to diferent from Aztec....¬¬

ivanjs In reply to Cangrejo-Volador [2005-06-24 02:44:19 +0000 UTC]

Forgot to mention, the image is a conglomeration of influences from meso-american art-wasn't really based on any one object, Mayan or Aztec, but it's sort of a combination of many different pieces I've seen over the years in Meso-American art (check out my painting "heavy helmets and warm beer" for a tongue in cheek look at a common theme in a lot of meso american art.

The primary influence here is the intricate intertwining detail that is so prevalent in meso american art-it's what drew me to the art in the first place!

Thanks, actually the original name was Meso-American Future, but it took too long to type and didn't have a ring to it. Artistic license allows me to call it whatever I want

An overall lovely image, with many elements that remind me of so many things. Definately an Aztechian feel to it. I really like the soft, light touch of your colored pencil use, mine always end up really "worked over". I'll look over more of your gallery given time, and comment on more as I can. So far I like what I have seen.

i see what you meant by use of the line. There are a lot of overlapping things in this piece, which makes it very interesting. Awsome job.

Stunning! I absolutely love the connection between the technology and the ancient symbolism! Not only have you had an exciting idea, but you've really produced a talent filled iamge as well! Your colour choice is surrounded with emotion, and the inferred spatial content adds to it. If you don't mind me asking, how much time did it take? I think alot of people don't realise the chore of such endeavors, as they become akin to producing children (of a sort!). I also spend way too much time on my illustrations (last one 320 hours), so I can completely respect your efforts!

Congratulations on a wonderful piece!

thanks so much for taking the time to comment so professionally. Appreciate that.

The whole piece took several weeks, a couple hours a day (more on weekends), but I don't have an exact time figure.

I hear you on that. I think we have a simlar working style, as I do the same thing, but since I started doing some minor commissions, keeping a running total became nec... I do love the idea and concept behind this, I'm also a huge fan of blending technology and organic ideas, and I love the mayan calandar faces...

Thank you. A lot of my work centers around my love of line, whether perceived or literal (my pottery, abstract paintings, the hatching technique in some of my drawings, and the linear qualities of the mayan series show this most). I'm also a fan of the design of machinery.

And I've always been a big fan of meso-american art, architecture, etc., so it was a natural progression to combine all of those things.

I sincerely appreciate the comment.

inca is a computer game (sort of a labarinth/dogfighting/first person shooting/puzzle/arcade game set in the future with elements of incan history and such mixed in). it also has a sequel.
