Description
These are some preliminary drawings I did when I did my Abstract Male pastel drawing [link] , which later became this painting:[link]
I don't usually do a lot of prelims like this, but since I was pretty noob at abstract, I decided to play it safe and just sketch first until I got a feel for line, space, etc.
The edge of the pastel is on the left, for scale (it was a large drawing!)-most of the prelims are 18"x24" or larger.

Very nice. Would have never thought that you would have been a noob at abstract.

Oh, yeah, when I took a workshop in abstract art, I just stared at the drawing paper wondering "what the hell am I doing here? I'm a surrealist!" Then the professor suggested that I just start making lines influenced by the form of the figure, and suddenly it all made sense. Then I couldn't stop-ended up doing that whole series in my gallery, and has even spread to sculptures I'm working on now.
Thanks for looking!

Ok...you are going to have to excuse my ignorance. But I thought surrealism was abstract art. Please correct this assumption.

Surrealism deals with dream-like imagery, often distorted like you were viewing it thru some sort of weird eyeglasses or something. Despite being dream-like, it is often quite realistic, except for the aforementioned distortions. Abstract on the other hand is the ultimate simplification of something real (though there is a form of abstract which isn't based on anything). So surrealism is often quite detailed and sort of realistic, while the abstract removes unnecessary detail and simplifies everything.
A smiley face is an abstraction of a smile for example-2 dots and a curve gets across the idea of a human face and suggests happiness, even though 2 dots and a curve are pretty simple imagery.
At least that's how I define the 2.

Good explaination. You can have something that is "real" that is actually surreal by a shift of perspective. Where abstract is pulling away from the real and making it more symbolic.
