Thank you. Obviously I had many MANY more thoughts, idea rejects, idea damnings, etc. as I was sketching, but I thought this was a fair sampling of what goes on when I'm sketching.

Cause it's over done for the most part.
Pick 10 high school boys in art class and ask them to draw whatever they want. Here's some purely unscientific results (I've judge a few high school art shows over the years):
1. Skulls
2. Flaming skulls
3. Flaming skulls with daggers in them
4. Flaming skulls with swastikas on them
5. Devil heads
And yeah, I went thru the same "phase" when I was 13, but you quickly get out of that when you realize it's what everyone else is doing and how clichΓ© it all is.
Skulls definitely have their place-I'm a huge custom chopper fan, and well, let's say skulls are pretty popular as decorations for bikes. But they work (usually) because many of them are so stylized to the point that they leave the clichΓ© skull realm behind and stand out as art forms to themselves.
Of course, these are just my opinions.
