I just used line segments instead of squares, having one branch go 45 degrees clockwise from its parent and the other go 45 degrees counter-clockwise. It creates the same design, but the right triangles point in opposite directions.

This is one of my favorites; I used a version of the Pythagoras Tree as part of my final project for a fractal project I did last semester. Pretty good approximation!
