Description my parents told me I could paint whatever I wanted in their guest room.

this was all freehanded with spraypaint. I got the fine lines by spraying a piece of cardboard right at the edge so a little bit of paint sprays on the wall. you move the can and the cardboard together to get those thin lines.

the leaves were sponged on by spraypainting wads of paper towels and dabbing them around. 4 colors overall.

This is so awesome. I just left it in my unread deviations and kept looking at it. This is the second piece of yours I just never get over that initial feeling of awe. This one and that green-eyed girl you originally drew on the back of your hand? They make me feel good.

I'm glad my sentiments were expressed well enough through my words. It's hard to express things well through text, I think. And, you are very welcome.

yeah, I hear people using that technique are a dime a dozen unfortunately. it's real amazing the first time you see it... but apparently it takes no skill.

Very nice!!! I always love your work, no matter what it is. Its cool of your parents to let you just do whatever you want with their room.

It looks, while not exactly 'real', truly beautiful-- like a very refined and highly planned work. I also like the blossoming effect.
<3 you. ^^

IvoryDrive In reply to bubafoo [2006-11-09 01:35:48 +0000 UTC]

well you can do a thing with spraypaint to get really thin lines by taking a quare piece of cardboard and spraypainting half and half on the cardboard and on the wall. that gives you two things. a sharp line, and a thin line. the leaves were sponged on with paper towels.

I'm really starting to enjoy spraypaint and I enjoy the evil glares I get from employees at hardware stores when I buy a bunch of it wearing my dark hooded sweatshirt.

when I bought the paint for this tree, it was midnight and I went to walmart. when I put all the paint up on the checkout counter, the old lady working there asked me "so... what are you doing tonight?" I initially thought "holy shit, this old lady is asking me out" then I realized she was hinting at the spraypaint. I laughed and said "oh, just an art project." she looked at me with a worried face and I said "it's nothing illegal, I'm just spraypainting the inside of my parents guest room." she sighed and said "just don't go gettin yourself in trouble..."

haha. midnight walmart runs for the win!

Looks like it's time to invest in an airbrush... It'll blow your mind...

And a fucking respirator... Don't fuck around wiht poison.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

IvoryDrive In reply to LaughingTree [2006-11-08 21:18:30 +0000 UTC]

yeah, I got a taste of that poison stuff when I was working on this. I did the first half of this with a fan blowing out the window and no mask. eventually there were two green paint trails going up into my nostrils and the back of my throat started stinging.

that was the point at which I though "oh... so this is what laughingtree was talking about. YACK COUGH SNORT"

I eventually found an old dusty resperator in my parents garage and it was all good from there, but yeah. a decent one is on my to-buy list now. what was that one you recommended to me way back when?

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

LaughingTree In reply to IvoryDrive [2006-11-09 07:07:00 +0000 UTC]

oh, and one more thing... be careful about pointing a fan out a window, I did that when I painted a mural at a country club, and the window frames all needed to be repainted in the end because it just blew all this overspray into the window frame essentailly painting the window frame blue (It was an underwater mural...)

Best $30 you'll spend. This is the one that I have and it's the most comfortable respirator I've ever worn. Hands down. IT also fits low-profile filters which fit under my welding helmet which is a nice plus. IF you're super-strapped for cash go with teh 6000 but it's not as comfy. This one is really worth it in my opinion. $40 for respirator and a filter is the same price you'd pay at any lowe's/home depot only you're getting a REALLLY good one here....

My full recommendation. Also make sure you get the right filters for what you're using it for...

haha...

I had a window open with a big fan pointing out it but I still did half of the thing without anything over my mouth and nose. eventually my nostrils were green and my throat started to sting, so I scrounged around in my parents garage and found a resperator. all was good past that point.

dire-musaera In reply to IvoryDrive [2006-11-08 10:40:26 +0000 UTC]

a normal face mask wont help that much really. my firned does spray painting he has like a $100 proper mask with like industrial strength filters... but thats coz he plans to do lots of it... if its just a little in your life time no big deal.... but if its something you plan to do a lot... invest in your health

I was going to have something like this done in my room. My room is shaped like half of a hexagon facing the street. A window on the diagonal wall, a huuuge window in the center, a window on the other diagonal wall, and above the center window is this semi circle window. All of them have these cool shutters, and we were going to have a huuuge mural painted over the entire three walls, painting on top of the shutter pannels so when you close the shutters, you can see the whole mural... It was going to be this african desert type mural, with sparse trees fading up to the setting sun (the semi circle Window). It was an ambitious project, and we almost did it...but something happened along the road..and it was never done...
