Description Pacific Rim is so awesome. not only is it a wonderful tribute to Japanese monster movies and mecha anime, its also the best "independence Day" remake. that ending was strikingly similar, just shy of giving them a "virus". its good fun so go see it...like several times cause i want sequel. GO RANGERS, GO!!!

also ill be attending comic-con and ill be sitting in the table next to the hotdog stand...oh who am kidding. ill be probably liying dead tire on the floor (as usual). see you there XD

Well the novel does say that it took about three nuclear weapons to kill any of the weakest Kaiju before the Jaegers we're developed. Also by the time the nukes had finally killed them they had reached a populated area so that usually left a portion of an important city irradiated.

That aside there is no arguing with a ROCKET PUNCH!

I love Pacific Rim, I really do, but the claim that it took three nuclear weapons to kill a kaijuu is, frankly, utter bullshit. The internal temperature of the core of a nuclear blast can exceed several million degrees centigrade and in the case of the highest yield hydrogen bombs, we're talking temperatures approaching a hundred million degrees, and at temperatures that high, matter literally cannot exist in its typical solid, liquid, or gaseous state. Anything in the center of the blast is instantly vaporized into superheated plasma.

Unless the kaijuu are made of magic matter that doesn't even remotely follow the laws of physics (or they have goddamn nuke-eating energy barriers), a direct hit by an atomic bomb will kill them, no questions asked. Frankly, if they can resist point blank nuclear explosions, there's no way a jaeger's plasma guns or fists could possibly hurt them.

That said, giant robots fighting giant monsters are awesome. Giant robots with rocket powered punches are even more awesome! With shit like that, who needs logic?

while nuking them would work for a while, when they hit the point when they're coming out every 30 seconds, wouldn't be enough time to kill all of them.

RoyalPsycho In reply to WootMannen [2013-09-29 14:32:24 +0000 UTC]

All of those are fair points. I was simply stating what the canon materials have given us. Maybe they really are made of some kind of super matter. They're supposed to be silicon based but maybe there is something else to their physical makeup.

However they never said that the nuclear strikes were point blank. I mean Kaiju are very quick for creatures their size so maybe they just began to move out of the way when the nukes started firing at them. They are smart enough to adapt to humanity's strategies as well so it's likely they figured out how to avoid the worst damage.

However this is a Kaiju/mecha movie. Logic means nothing before the reveered "Rule Of Cool".

And remember the scene where the old black soldier turned badass commanding officer who runs an insane government alien-fighting program talks to a bunch of old white guys (who happen to be of all different races and genders while still managing to be old white guys) who cancel his project, and then elects to ignore them? Wait, am I talking about Avengers or this?

AND WHY DO ALL THE ROBOTS HAVE FUCKING FINGERS? WHAT THE FUCK DO THESE THINGS NEED TO BE SO ARTICULATE ABOUT? ARE THEY ALL WRITING NOVELS IN THEIR SPARE TIME? DO THEY NEED THEM TO PICK THEIR NOSES? I know it seems like a small thing, but each one of those fingers cost enough money to feed a third world village for a century!

But I still love this movie, if only for Charlie Day and GLaDOS.

Setting off a nuke everytime a kaiju went through would just kill us. Fallout can be carried for hundred of miles by the wind and water current and kill people with radiation poison or cancer. Not to mention some of the kaiju take more than one nuke to kill (Trespasser in the comic, Slattern). The comic even explained that they made the Jaegers cause they realized more and more monsters keep showing up and nukes could not be used to solve the problem all the time or else we've cause nuclear winter. In other words Jaeger means we don't poison ourselves trying to kill them.

That being said you'd think Newt would have made special missiles that "inject" poisons in the kaiju since he talked about how they first came to our dimension during the time of the dinosaurs and the environment was not right for them to surivie.

Maybe that's why Striker Eureka's missiles are so effective at killing kaiju when normal missiles fail, he beats the shit out of them and than why they are already half dead the missiles inject an overdose of toxins that finish them off.

The apocalypse has been canceled on account of rain.Β  We here in Employee Resources feel it would be counterproductive to employee morale to wipe out indigenous species under poor weather conditions.Β  The board of directors is currently convening on establishing a new date for an apocalypse.

Also, please ignore any rumors that the main portal generator has been destroyed by a catastrophic nuclear reactor explosion.Β  We are presently experiencing technical difficulties and should expect to restore portal service soon, either by repairing the main facility or upgrading a secondary facility.

Don't forget that Thursday is Hawaiian shirt day.Β  Even though this has been fairly recent in our second attempt at the Sol-3 colonization project, it adds a much needed dash of additional color to our world of fireball yellow and organic death purple.

We are pleased to note that some of you actually do pay attention to the hive-mind connection.Β  It seemed that after many of us discovered Facebook, there were issues with the mental network being clogged with unnecessary traffic.Β  We have started numerous trouble tickets with IT (Intelligent Technologies) but they are still swamped after another incident following the closure of the main Breach facility arose...

***earlier at the Shatterdome***

Newt: "Hey Hermann, want to help me play a joke on the Kaiju?"
Hermann: "Newton, are you drunk?!"
Newt: "Sure am, I wanna see whether it carries through the drift!"
*pause*
Hermann: "Let's see if the Heineken Uncertainty Principle applies here!Β  Pass the scotch!"
Hannibal: "Oh, this I gotta see."

***back to present***

...which probably led to WHY the decision was handed down from the board to have Hawaiian shirt day.

Try making an explosive missile that can dig through fifty feet of tissues... bunker busters don't even get that far, let alone carry a warhead that can cause enough damage.Β

Nukes would irradiate the sea, not even finish off the kaijuu. The first Kaijuu were killed by nukes with armor piercing capabilities. Not exactly clean, and the fallout spread radiation AND kaijuu blood.

Lasers don't slice, they cause instant thermal damage, vaporization if you were.

Though judging be the effectiveness of the plasma gun, i wonder why they couldn't just set those up as artillery pieces :/

Glad to see someone else remembers that nukes cause FUCKING FALLOUT!

Sorry for that but for as commonly known as they are it amazes me how many people and films seem ignorant about the fallout problem which is why they are a last resort. We risk poisoning or giving ourselves cancer every-time we use them.

DolphinSilverwolf In reply to SageofEyes [2013-07-25 04:10:34 +0000 UTC]

Lasers would be effective if you could get within range, plus you have to match wavelength to surface...like a surgical laser, you have to set the color so that the tissue absorbs the light.Β  That and you'd then need to get close enough so that atmospheric conditions don't disperse the info before it lands on target.

Plasma is effective at short range because it disperses in atmosphere.Β  It's more like a high-energy shotgun.Β  Dark Matter...unpredictable and you need the opening to charge up the weapon.

Striker Eureka had missiles that could dig through those tissues, but you need the time to expose the launchers and fire.

And Jaegers have one advantage that fixed emplacements don't...THEY CAN MOVE.Β  FAST.

I think the next best upgrade to the Jaegers would be "Handheld" armament, weapons that could be picked up and carried as secondary ordinance, things that change up the tactical game as rapidly as the Precursors could adapt the Kaiju.Β  That would provide rapid adaptability.Β  Even something as simple as a thermite-enhanced spear would do the trick.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SageofEyes In reply to DolphinSilverwolf [2013-07-28 04:49:17 +0000 UTC]

Current laser systems, and many in the future, can only cut through a few inches. Even the most powerful laser int he world currently being powered by nuclear reactors for fusion energy research, lasts mere milliseconds and will cause only surface damage.

Well surface damage that equal to the power of the sun for a second... so that would blow up quite nicely.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DolphinSilverwolf In reply to SageofEyes [2013-07-28 16:57:49 +0000 UTC]

They can only cut through a few inches because with a laser you risk changing surface characteristics as you vaporize.Β  One of those characteristics is color.Β  Once the color changes, so does the absorptive tendency of that surface.

I've seen it happen with medical lasers.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SageofEyes In reply to DolphinSilverwolf [2013-07-31 05:29:43 +0000 UTC]

Military grade lasers, I kid you not here, are designed to heat things up and cause electronics to melt. The amount of chemical by-product of a single shot is ridiculous to say the least.Β

Besides, who couldn't say that the plasma caster isn't using laser to heat up and propel gas, that's certainly a good way to go about it.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DolphinSilverwolf In reply to SageofEyes [2013-08-01 05:32:15 +0000 UTC]

Hell, even medical lasers are designed to heat things up and make them vaporize, so I'm not doubting the output power, it's just the range.Β  Lasers are prone to atmospheric scattering and distortion.Β  That "heat shimmer" you see off the highway on a hot day is one problem with using a laser at range.Β  Anything in the air...dust, rain, snow, it restricts the amount of power the laser can deliver.Β  Also, you need to match the wavelength such that the surface absorbs the energy effectively.Β  That can be done with some lasers...

Problem is, you'd better hope the Kaiju doesn't have a ranged attack that can hit your emplacement before you do enough damage...and you've got to do enough physical damage to the Kaiju to bring it down.

Although maybe not for heating plasma (you can do that with RF induction)...I'd suggest the laser might be used to make a path of least resistance for it...heat the air between the breech of the gun and the target surface, possibly to the point of ionization.Β  Once you get that, you make a nice little highway for the plasma to travel on.Β  Then all you have to do is empty the clip.
