Hmm... I think that it was just the pressure sensitivity airbrush (I have a tablet) with the settings changed to to opacity jitter and then just jitter (I cant remember exactly what it's called, but if you move the slider it makes the dots more spread out) and then I just varied the brush size and blobbed it around - it was a bit of trial and error really
I hope that was somewhat helpful, anyway, and that you managed to pick out some meaningful stuff from that, I really am dreadful at explaining things!
