Description
The Aleut badass antagonist from Snowcrash... I spent a long time designing his jacket in other drawings.. I wanted something cool, but also extroverted... and threatening.. lol It looks kinda ravey.. but I would wear it! That is a nuclear warhead he is carrying bout. If you haven't read SnowCrash, I suggest it.. just for him.. he is the GREATEST villain. mmmnRelated content

Beautiful work... but you forget that Raven has a block-letter tattoo on his forehead that reads "POOR IMPULSE CONTROL".
I can see that there is not much room for it in this illustration, but still am mildly disappointed.

This is old as Noah. Lol, I was planning on doing another one, something like the concert scene in the LA river, with him in the foreground. On his bike! How'd that rule?!
Hahaha, I love Raven, and Uncle Enzo... so many great characters in there!
I'm reading Diamond Age again right now, possibly the fourth or fifth time, and I love the cameos!

Hahahaha! How fanfic of ya! Looking forward to seeing what you come up with.
My first time through diamond age was rough. But every time I've read it since, I've garnered more and more from it. It's actually quite brilliant.
Ya can't read it hoping for cyberpunk though. He's created a new Genre, PostCyberpunk SteamPunk. It's soooo good, as long as you can let go of the restraints of expecting cyber punk.

I agree with the one guy that you should do some kind of action shot of Hiro tearing up the boats with REASON.
God that book is so awesome. What a great image you have here. One of the most memorable scenes in the whole book is the one in which Raven totally wrecks the police department and Hiro is basically scared shitless trying to fight him in that Bamboo forest. How awesome can you get?
Anyway, I think another great character shot would be of Hiro's avatar wandering the streets of the computer-generated world him and his friends created... maybe him in the Black Sun? Was that the name of it? There are so many possibilities for absolutely ridiculous character designs in that situation.
Besides all of that, really great drawing to match some really great subject matter. And what was that you two were going on about a film? Are they making one? That would totally rock.

har, sweet man, i think that first pinky finger joint is a bit long, most peoples tendons of their pinky and ring finger are attached to eachother, so that would be a hard hand position to really have. unless he plays alot of guitar/violin! im just being critical great work man

Badass doesn't even begin to describe him...
I think the jacket is fantastic, so are the face and hair, but his hand looks totally twisted up. And he doesn't look as down right HUGE as he's described in the book. Other than the size and the hand, it's perfect.

No you are right, he is the one with Poor Impulse Control written on his forehead... I however haven't decided where to put it yet, I have been thinking about it, and I think it ought to be in a place just as readable but more painful, maybe his cheek or something.. dunno yet. Thanks!

*laughs*... show me a man that is not genetically abnormal with no neck, and is nearly seven feet tall... Describing something with mild exaggeration in writing is called literary license... it allows us to spin interesting yarns with , in this particular case, bigger than life characters... when you port for film or something real, it is usually understood that you can take a little back to realism. Thanks for visiting.

kevmesser In reply to IzzyMedrano [2004-11-09 05:45:40 +0000 UTC]
Yes, but you're not casting a live actor for a film in this case...rather designing a character. As you know, the beauty of art is that you can do things that you cannot in real life. While you may be hard-pressed to find an actor who fits Stephenson's larger than life description, it'd be a shame not to match it in a drawing/painting. Err on the side of over exaggeration in the beginning and pull back for realism's sake only if needed. Even if this does eventually lead to a film, this is the preproduction stage - anything goes.

IzzyMedrano In reply to kevmesser [2004-11-09 06:15:26 +0000 UTC]
Correction, if you do look at my descriptions I am in fact designing for film. That is my job. As far as preproduction goes, the client, i.e. producer, or director tend to not have the vision necessary to imagine how it would be based off of an exaggeration. As far as I have seen they tend to need to know how it will look, damned close to the finished product. I have to design for the purposes of a live actor, and as such, I have deemed it unnecessary to add prosthetics to get him to look like a brief exaggerated description written by Stephenson. I prefer the more realistic, making this guy even more badass, as he is a real believable person. I am sorry you are not pleased with the final design, and it doesn't add up to what you had in mind, but that is how the game goes, you can't please everyone.

Yeah, I saw that you're designing for a film...but it's more of a personal project that you're hoping will lead to larger things, correct? So, yes, you kind of need to design him so that a producer/director can fairly easily imagine this for live action (although a Snow Crash animated film could be even better)...but he/she will probably want to see like 10 different designs, at least. Don't get me wrong, I like the character from a design standpoint, and you're honestly one of my favorite artists on here (which is why I'm being so critical), but if I were the producer I'd be wary of straying too far from Stephenson's vision. Being a somewhat underappreciated book, Snow Crash has quite a dedicated fan base that will have a hissy fit if you're not true to the world as they know it. Seeing how you're aiming for live action and not animated film though, I guess the costume is more important than the actual character. So...when do we get to see atomic sidecar?

IzzyMedrano In reply to kevmesser [2004-11-10 17:50:47 +0000 UTC]
Oh, I agree, they will want to see many different designs, and I have several, particularly of his jacket in line drawings in the ideation phase. I so far have only had time to do one final production paintings. I think an animated film would be pimping too. But as I stated, I am prepping for a live action film, and the fanbase would be less pissed I think about my allowing Raven to have just MASSIVE human proportions rather than not putting "Poor Impulse Control" in the place they most suspect. I am amazed that during this particular diatribe you hadn't noticed that. Hehehehe. As for what a producer would want to see, UNLESS they have read the book, and considering its relative underground following, that is unlikely, they would not have a preconcieved notion of what Raven would look like. And as such I can GUARANTEE that they would be very confused about his trogish dimensions, and ask questions about that, considering that prosthetics are just THAT much more money. From my experience their response would be this... and I quote, "This is a great painting, but I think (he) needs to be toned down a little bit, we can get (Wes Studi) to play (him) then!"... I only need to please Stephenson, in my mind. However, this will be our solution to this discussion. If you can get it up to production quality painted in five or six hours, I would GLADLY include your concept painting of Raven as you see him! As for the sidecar, it is still in sketch phase, I won't be posting alot of the things I do for this project, or it would be no fun for you guys if it works out. lol. I gotta keep some secrets, no? I am really pleased with how Ng is coming out at the moment, I might post him. hehehehe...

Apologies for the late reply. I can't believe I didn't recognize the lack of "Poor Impulse Control"...so where did you put it? Considering your twisted mind, I'm guessing his penis Which is funny, but it changes his character and the world a bit, and somehow I don't think Mr. Stephenson will like that.
When do you plan on sending these? I'm way too bogged down with school at the moment, but I'd love to add some work if there's time.
