It *clap* has *clap* BEGUN *CLAP*
Over on Patreon, our supporters have already gotten this cover, a prologue page, a title page, the Chapter 1 cover, page 1 and a page 2 teaser with page 2 itself being released on Friday!
In addition to that, we've posted a fair bit of concept art as well! Anyone interested in this can pledge right now and see all of it -> www.patreon.com/HomeworldComic Any and all support is massively appreciated!
Otherwise, page 1 will be posted here on my page and Mads' FA page on March 15, with the three precursor pages being released the days before.
I'm gonna take the opportunity to ramble a bit about my experience so far - we may be just starting to post pages but we've been making them since January 7. I'm currently working on pages 14 and 15!
I'll start with the cover, although that's fairly new since I put it off for a while, due to lack of ideas. I find covers to be very difficult, especially main covers, since they can be the deciding factor of whether or not someone chooses to even try reading the comic. I was browsing comics on SmackJeeves one day and thought to myself, 'I would probably click on more of these if they showed me the main character(s) and the art style', so I decided I needed to do that for my own cover. Now it couldn't just be the MC standing around looking as if a pigeon just shit on his car, so I had to at least try to be clever and get some symbolism in there. I'm very weak with symbolism, but I'm fairly pleased with the idea that eventually struck me, and how it turned out, even if it's pretty on the nose as far as symbolism goes, lol. The minimal colors I also rather like, even if it looks unintentionally retro(?)
When we started making pages, it really hurt. I've for a long time struggled with efficiency when it comes to drawing. I could not get things right or be satisfied in the first go, so it was a lot and a lot of re-sketching and fighting simple shapes. Luckily, drawing daily as I did I quickly got more efficient, to the point where pages 11, 12 and 13 were sketched and lined in just two days (and there are 6 characters in that scene!) so I'm very pleased with that progress.
That said, from pages 9 and up we adopted a different working method - instead of doing pages one by one, we're doing entire scenes at once (max 4 pages at the same time), and that has really sped up the process, though the main intent of doing that was to create better consistency between pages, as I found it difficult to get the backgrounds to match up when we did pages one by one. AND speaking of backgrounds, turns out lined backgrounds are a bad idea. A lot of effort and they don't really look good in the end. Backgrounds are lined from pages 1 to 10 and are then lineless/painted from page 11 and out, and I've found it to be more enjoyable to do it that way. This project is a learning experience after all. It's been fun to learn things like that, and find little shortcuts to things - for example in HW we use 'uniquely' shaped speechbubbles which were a pain to put together for every page, so I made custom PS shapes instead and now putting bubbles on pages are a breeze.
I am so happy that I learned how to 3D model before starting the comic. Non-organic backgrounds are my worst enemy - I despise inventing perspective and drawing straight lines, or perfectly round shapes, I swear this could have been a nightmare. Thankfully, with Blender I am able to model the environment of which the scenes take place in, and put character models around for reference points (my 3D scenes just consist of this bunch of faceless, A-posing dogs standing around each other and it's hilarious). I guarantee if I had to do it all by hand, it would look a lot worse and would take a lot longer, so this turned out to be a vital skill for me to learn. Thank you Rookie, for seeing me mess around in Sculptris and encouraging me to go learn Blender, you're a lifesaver lmao
It was a slow start but I'm really enjoying myself now. I love being excited for this project, and sharing my excitement with you guys. I hope you're gonna like it <3

oh my god I'm so belated to this LMAO BUT
Excellent cover choice in the end! I think the colors work wonders, as does the iconography.
The bits of blue are an interesting touch and work well with the palette.
Best of luck on this endeavor!! I'm looking forward to following along!

Yay! I'm excited! It's a really cool cover. Using the limited colors really makes it pop out. (I think I can spot Elliot's neck fluff in there )
I'm glad to hear you're learning so much from this project. I think it's awesome that you're learning to use Blender models as references! I look forward to the first page.

I'm excited! I've been following the progress of this comic for years now, (and the both of you for even longer) and I'm very proud of you and Mad for coming this far! I remember the first try at this comic series way back when.
The main cover looks amazing, and I can't wait to see what else you two will offer. I wish the best of luck for you two as you work on the comic, and hopefully it will be a success!
