Description
Dr. O'Connor works in the Hanzel corporation technology division. This laboratory is located in Newark, New Jersey, USA. The building itself was once a textile factory. But with the changing of the times, the factory closed and the building was purchased by the Hanzel corporation. Hanzel is basically a privately funded company that specialized in computer technology and advanced research. Β Dr. O'Connor is one of the leading scientists in the field of Android research and development. He has been working on creating the Experimental Android for the past few years. Though his work is kept on the down low, there are grumblings in the scientific community about his project. The lab itself is a large, sterile place. The floors are white linoleum, and the walls are painted an off white color. It looks as sterile as a hospital operating room. There are several tables scattered throughout the lab, each with various pieces of Android equipment. On one wall, there are three large computer monitors, which Dr. O'Connor uses to monitor the Experimental Android's systems.
On another wall, adjacent to the closed off lab area is a number of prototypes. All incomplete and in various stages of assembly. Most of which were failures. The Experimental Android was the first to successfully pass all the tests.
There is an observation glass along the far wall, which allows the scientist to observe the closed off lab area. Inside is a large machine. The machine itself is called the Android Assembly Unit. It is the machine used to build the Experimental Android. The Android Assembly unit is the size of a small house. The inside of the machine is littered with various mechanical components and electrical wiring. On the end of the unit stands an android. It is about 5 ft 8, weighing roughly 135 pounds. Its synthetic skin is a light peach color, and its eyes are closed at the moment.
Dr. O'Connor walks over to a nearby computer and begins typing on the keyboard. His fingers fly over the keys as he checks the Android's systems. Everything seems to be functioning normally. He pulls up a window on the screen and beings entering information to the file. This information contains what the android will be called once it's activated. Β
It reads:
Android Name: Braden
Human Age: 17 years
Sex: male
Weight: 135 pounds
Species: Android
Based off Human: Yes, Name: Redacted
"Braden...that sounds like a good name." Dr. O'Connor mutters under his breath. He hits a few more keys and then stops. The Android is now ready to be activated.
"Alright, let's see if this works." Dr. O'Connor says, mostly to himself. He pushes a few more keys on the keyboard and then presses enter. A small green light flashes in the room the Β Android' is in.
The Android itself is incomplete, missing most of his skin on its torso, showing its' internal. Some if the facial skin is still missing as well, showing the internal structure of it's jaw. The Android stands motionless. Dr. O'Connor waits for a few seconds. Nothing happens. He frowns.
"Hmm, must be something wrong with the system." O'Connor thought to himself. He left the room with his laptop and entered the area where the Android stood. He approached it and checked the wiring harness connections from the computer to the Android. Everything seemed fine. Dr. O'Connor shrugged and returned to the main computer. He pressed a few more keys and entered the Android activation sequence again. Another small green light flashed in the room. Still nothing. He stroked his chin and thought for a few minutes. Then he got an idea.
Dr. O'Connor walked back into the Android activation area, and stood right in front of the Android. He cleared his throat and bumped the Android in the back of the head.
"Hey Braden, wake up!" Dr. O'Connor shouted. Suddenly, the Android's eyes shot open, and it blinked a few times. Its' dark blue eyes scanned the room, taking everything in. "Ouch" were the first words that the Android said.
Dr. O'Connor smiled and stepped back a bit.
"Welcome Braden, to the world." Dr. O'Connor says. The Android just stared straight ahead. Dr. O'Connor frowned. He snapped his fingers and grabbed a screwdriver. He reached behind the Androids ear and adjusted a screw to turn up the Androids hearing. Dr. O'Connor repeated himself.
"Welcome Braden, to the world." He says again. The Android cocked its head to the side.
"Hello world, here's a song that we're singin' / C'mon get happy" The Android sang the Partridge Family TV show theme song. Dr. O'Connor rolled his eyes.
"No Braden, I said welcome to the world, not the 1970's."
"I'm sorry Doctor. I'm having trouble processing your words. Please standby while I update my speech program." The Android blinked a few times and then shut its' eyes.
Dr. O'Connor frowned. "Great...I created an asshole Android." He thought to himself.
NOTES: This was something I struggled with. Since this is all science fiction, I guess I could've gone in any direction. But I always like to keep it light hearted, yet serious. This story is not as long as I normally do (your welcome...LOL) with these things. I MAY introduce a character in the next part that most of you will recognize. He would fit perfectly, but he will only be used once. He's there for his money, not what he does in his spare time. I'll just leave it at that.Β
Hope you all enjoy this one.
