Indeed! I've never seen a moth like that before! One tends to subestimate moths... Incredible shot!

I think you can find such moths in your country, maybe not this specific species but closely related ones. The genius Automeris is specific from North and central America.
But never touch their caterpillars, they are highly stinging!

luandrei In reply to J-Y-M [2008-02-18 17:15:08 +0000 UTC]

Oh! I may know of what are you talking about... the catterpillar are likes spiked and burn the skin at touch, or not?
You know alot, it's great to find someone who likes insects and knows so much about them

J-Y-M In reply to luandrei [2008-02-18 17:57:55 +0000 UTC]

Yes, exactly. The caterpillars have stinging hairs and they can be very painful. [link]
Thank you! It is always a pleasure to share. And I love insects (particularly butterflies and moths) since I was a child...
You are very lucky: there are many beautiful butterflies and moths in your country, amongst the most wonderful species in the world!

That's very nice! Since lots of people don't like insects, it's very interesting to find someone who likes them and knows so much about them

People often don't like what they don't know! As far I am concerned, I love them, that's true, but I know only a very little about them.

Very interesting all the color variation on the forewing there. The female Io moths we raised were almost a uniform rust color.

J-Y-M In reply to Fezzgator [2008-02-07 08:05:05 +0000 UTC]

I suppose there are many subspecies. Unfortunately I don't remember the origin of the livestock...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Fezzgator In reply to J-Y-M [2008-02-09 01:06:55 +0000 UTC]

Ah yes, I apologize for forgetting that you would be importing it, I just took for granted that its a local here. But yes, its a shame you don't remeber as I am quite interesting to know where it came from.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

J-Y-M In reply to Fezzgator [2008-02-09 09:07:15 +0000 UTC]

Well, I have got the eggs from a German breeder... But I think the origin of the livestock was rather Central America, maybe Costa-Rica.
