Description
Many people don't know it but the Red Fox isn't always red. There are some individuals with different fur colors. This is known as a Cross Phase, as in a cross between the Red phase and the Silver Phase. Really the name comes from the fur patern that forms a cross on the foxes back. It's fairly rare and occurs in less than 12 percent of the popultion.Related content

At the place where I volunteered in wildlife rehab, she had 2 cross foxes from the same litter! They were unreleasable in the wild, though, so they remained at the sanctuary as permanent residents. She still has one of them - she's 14 years old now! I did a few paintings of her.

Ah, but Kerr has orange markings on his face. And I'm pretty sure this one is a vixen, based on it's size at least.

Damn what a handsome cross fox.
We have all colors here in York...even the grey fox, which is a different species. Right now we have a silver, a deep red and a tan. A real Vulpes Pot Pourri

Unfortunately, all of the foxes around me were wiped out a long time ago. Supposedly, they are making a comeback. I just have to wait three more months before I get to head back to Alaska.

Most people don't know because they are pretty rare. Everyone thinks of the red fox as the traditional red and white. I'm glad that I can show it to others and educate them just a little.
