Description Another "What would a version you could actually useΒ look like?" redesign to practice rendering skills. To clarify, the image is complete; this is the incomplete form of Soul Edge (I'm not drawing the 'complete' form, AKA the Meatstick). I love the concept of this thing, and I wanted to make it look as menacing as possible. Remnants of an older blade being consumed and repurposed can still be see in the mess of twitching muscle and growing metal, and the knuckle guard hints at the awful truth. You never hold Soul Edge.

Soul Edge holds you.

Soul Edge belongs to Namco.Β

it's like a chicken wing that somebody chewed all the meat off of... I love it.

I can totally see why I mistook this for official SC6 artwork.Β  And I greatly appreciate you taking the time to make this sword NOT look like you're swinging a side of beef by the leg.

Hilarious as that might actually be.

Great job brother!

I always wondered how a "real-life" Soul Edge would look like. Now I know. And it's much more awesome and scary than I ever imagined.

this looks awesome!Β  the original messy clump to be called sword looks so huge and clumsy I kinda find it redicilous, it would have been much better if it looked like this. fantastic work! fantastic colours! its very impressive

When drawing weapons like this, how many layers do you use?, what program are you using?, could you tell me a little bit about the progress because I would love to draw my swords designs myself but everytime I try it all ends up so messy...

Thank you! Yeah, the giant sledge of a sword is a fond memory for me (Nightmare's my overall best character in any given Soul Calibur game), but ludicrous. At least they made the fighting style lookΒ like he was swinging around a car door on a stick.

Generally speaking, it's almost all done on one layer, not counting the gradient background, until I need to do some special effects toward the end. It's in Photoshop, and mostly done with a hard round brush with opacity, size, and flow jitter keyed to pen pressure; ditto for the eraser. This whole series so far has been me experimenting with color and the smudge tool thanks to the incredible and his youtube channel's time-lapse videos, so I'd direct you there since at the moment I'm mostly working off those.Β

As far as the design work, I usually like to pair up the sword with a suitable Oakeshott type (I personally own a type XVIIIb, so that gets used for reference a lot) or other real-world blade, and roughly block out the silhouette in black. From there, it's just draw and erase loosely and freely till I have something that looks dangerous and realistic. I typically have a third layer with a handful of straight lines thrown on for references, including the all-important balance point.Β

You know, I might just do an infographic-style tutorial. Still, I hope this helps!
