I love this picture!!
the black and white contrast, the great use of negative space..
it draws more attention to your brother, his face, even the texture of his jumper.
incredible, a FAVE for sure.

Wow, fantastic portrait! Composition and cropping works very well with the expression on his face and the large white space and black and white tones keep this shot very simple and clean. I don't think I'd do much differently. I might have sharpened it just a tiny bit, but that's really down to personal preference. Since I have to find something though, there're a few pixels of your border around the bottom mid/left that're not black.

adorable portrait! he seems very photogenic. i love the black and white scheme, and the negative space you have is just enough to not take away from the subject.. i also like how he's not completly centered on the edge. so cute

Lovely simple composition, I like how you were not afraid to make use of the negative space and cut off part of his face, I think it adds to the photo's impact. I also really like his expression. The only thing I would suggest is (though I don't know that value you used) upping your F-stop value, or your shuttertime, to lessen the somewhat overexposed areas. I would personally choose the F-stop value as this doesn't only make your exposure area smaller, causing less light, but also gives you a bigger field of focus. (This is of course all assuming your camera will allow you to change these settings).

the simplicity of the white background is great- it brings focus to the right side of the picture. I like how he is only particially there. It gives a feeling like you snuck the picture when he wasn't aware. Very emotive subject.

I like the negative space, but its almost just a hair too much to me. not even much, just a tiny bit.

I love how he's just off to the side, yet all attention is on him.

was this done with a manual camera? or with a digital... if it was done with a digital... could you perhaps give me some tips as to how you made the background white?

jackel15 In reply to Ash-Ltd [2006-06-24 05:37:05 +0000 UTC]
It was done with a digital. However, it was done with my old digital camera and do not exactly remember what was done. I know you can mess with the "curves" and it will do the similar thing. Im sorry I don't remember. Somewhere I do have it written down though ( I keep track of weired things like that) lol and If i find it I will tell you I promise. Sorry

weird? keeping a photolog is not weird. i do it too. all good photographers do it. (not saying that i'm good) but its a great way to learn what worked and what didn't. especially when you specialize in manual photography. (adjusting the shutterspeed and f-stop and what not) i think that i could do that picture with a manual camera... but not a digital... you'd probably have to raise the shutterspeed or adjust the ISO... i dunno. it's remarkable.

Kids are so stinkinβ cute! What expression! This is fun, really liking this shot. I really like what you did with the comp, how heβs cut in half and on one half of the image. Heβs also in a soft B&W, which works with all the bright white negative space. I also like how heβs staring dead at the viewerβ¦cool! My only issue is the innocent partβhe looks more mischievous! I would just remove the type at the bottom, I think the image is strong without the words.

Gah, how cute is he! ^_^ I just want to give him a Anyway, this is very nice, the black and white looks great. Although he doesn't look exactly innocent...More like he's trying to look innocent while pouring worms onto someone's dinner plate. XD Anyway, great work!

I don't know if he is sued to posing or not, but that is great work. kids are hard to work with, and you've captured it well with nice use of tone and placement in the frame. the wording works well as well. looks like an advertisement for something almost. would be great on a billboard
