Description
Preface:I find it diverting when writer-artists use anthropomorphized animals to act out historical events. I guess cartoon animals are easier for us to look at than other humans. I've found that, in learning about particularly bloody events in history, this practice makes it easier for some to view visual learning material, thus making it easier for them to learn.
Rights & Unity is a historical fiction story about two American brothers, Billy and his little brother Johnny, who fight for opposing sides during the American Civil War. I chose to use raccoons because they're American, when anthropomorphizezed, they're rather expressive, I can strategically use them to play around with the word ''coon' (the word's used in a few songs that are pretty catchy), and...because raccoons are pretty darn cute most of the time.
And yes, I'm aware that I fudged the drawing of the ampersand and it looks like a cursive S.

Have you had some bad experiences with rebels?

Some rebels must be supressed by force... as it was with Confederate.

Yes. Ol' Johnny Reb sure put up one hell of a fight. He fought all the way 'til he was forcibly rendered exhausted by attrition warfare. For that, and for fighting for the cause of States' Rights, we respect him and wish to honor his memory. He truly embodied the warrior's fighting spirit.
I suppose, by being a 'dead rebel', he could be considered a 'good rebel' for having 'fought all the way'. In the unofficial Confederate anthem, "The Bonnie Blue Flag", are the words: "...Rather than submit to shame, to die we would prefer...". Is that what you meant by your previous statement?
Of course, there's also that one famous adage that General George S. Patton spake. "No poor bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor bastard die for his country!" Interestingly, General Patton was the grandson of a Confederate soldier. Pretty neat, huh?

I am admiring the courage and honour of the men of South, still it is quite biblical: the South was brought to hellfire of cannons and steel of bayonets and crushed, alike Egypt was crushed with divine wonders during Exodus.
How it was described in marches of Union like "Battle Anthem of the Republic".
"Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord:
He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored;
He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword:
His truth is marching on.
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
His truth is marching on."
General Patton was the grandson of a Confederate trooper? Now I respect him even more.
"Rommel, you beautiful bastard, I've read your book!"

Ah yes. Many of the words to The Battle Hymn of the Republic came right out of The Book of Revelation. The author, a woman named Howell, I think it was, received the words in a dream and then wrote them down immediately after waking up. She replaced the morbid words to John Brown's Body with the ones we have now. The tune remains the same though.
If I'm not mistaken, yes he was.
That was a great line.

She's a mighty fine garment, ain't she?
Yeah. Sorry 'bout that. I know that the uniform of the Union Army is blue, but the closest color pencil I had in reach was a violet-blue one.

Thank ya! ^^
In drawing their faces, I was going of a look that was a mixture of anger, sadness, and fear.
And yes, raccoons are awesome.
If you want to draw them, I'd be honored. Do keep in mind, though, that Billy's coat's meant to be dark blue, rather than violet. Violet's the closest color on the wheel that I had within reach. Besides, this is just concept art, right? Right?

It's very good.
You're fine, you're fine. I'll draw them in a couple days when I can get my feet under me. I also have to do that RISK comic and FunLand to do (especially now that I've entered FunLand in a contest).

JackofAllAss In reply to Tigerach [2014-12-13 05:15:46 +0000 UTC]
Well... They're both religious and love their family. God, family and country. They're both also literate, well-read and like to study history. Their daddy also taught 'em to shoot and fight, plus sharing his wisdom and historical knowledge.
Johnny is a staunch proponent of States' rights and is ardently against big, pushy government. So, he sided with the Confederacy. He's also a bit more wild than Billy. He was worried for his big brother when he found out that he was siding with the North.
Billy fears for the Country's future if it gets split up by secession and so he sided with the Union. He also fears for his little brother's safety.
Heh. I actually kind of based them off of my older half-brother and I. Only they're a lot more country.

Oh whoa they're brothers fighting each other? Bugger that's the most literal representation of that idea I've seen in media. This'll be fun.
Heh I try not to base people on myself or my siblings but I'll admit in middle school I had a superhero named Tiger Girl and her sidekick/younger brother, Scratch.....who were definitely me and my brother

Wow. Glad I could garner such a response in such an early stage.
Tiger Girl and Scratch. Nice. Billy and Johnny aren't completely like my half-brother and I, but my mind just sort of shifted in that direction when they were being conceived (since a half-brother and a tomboy sister are the closest things I have to a blood-brother). Johnny's supporting of State's rights and checked government, along with gun toting and poetry loving are kind of inspired by me, though.

I....wouldn't want to. Since she's basically me and a huge Mary Sue it would be awful. And I've kind of moved past superhero comics in general. I could draw them again, though.
